Ciao Pamela - Joni lives in Los Angeles mostly, she also maintains a seaside residence in British Columbia, Canada. Not too long ago she joined a group of citizens in trying to push back against developers who wanted to clear some of the land and build in the area. I'm thinking that her B.C. home is the inspiration for her soon-to-be-released song "This Place": Sparkle on the ocean Eagle at the top of a tree Those crazy crows always making a commotion This land is home to me. I was talking to my neighbor He said, "When I get to heaven, if it is not like this, I'll just hop a cloud and I'm coming right back down here Back to this heavenly bliss." For all the darkness in some of the Shine lyrics, this litttle bit lets me know that Joni is still in a happy place. Many, the majority, of my age group (hey, I turned 57 on the 27TH!!!!) knew Joni's work. Hardly anyone who was between 20 and 30 had even heard of her...not for long. "Harry" represents for me the majority of American males...their dreams of becoming "Harry"...and the reference to "Harry" always evoked a particular type of woman I never could relate with...other strong negative feelings included. How about "credit card eyes"!!!! I'm not sure how, if, who "coyote" means to me....have to think about this for a while. How about "Man From Mars"???? The emotion in Joni's voice is so intense....or is that my projection? Joni is with me on a continual level. She is always somehow within my mind. And I'm not referring to the many visual and musical reminders in my environment. I need to have Joni with me...maybe she's the only friend I really have. I trust Joni. She invites me into her world...her visual, musical, interpreted, very personal world. I react...I relate. I don't try to second guess Joni...I want to maintain the intimacy she shares but, ya know, I can't keep from wondering. Joni and I sort of walk together hand in hand. I love to try to figure out why a particular song, or a set of lyrics suddenly pops into my mind. This sounds very strange, I know...but I don't want to meet Joni. I "know" her my way...from all that she shares and all she evokes in me. I can't imagine ever meeting Joni, other than in some public arena...that, for me, could be Joni. And when I (desperately) want some ice-cream (I've been to rehab so many times) she's really helped...or that piece of chocolate....and, most importantly, she shares what I envision is her self-determination, her self-discipline with me and motivates me. Just to sit quietly and consider this woman, who is sheer genius...so rich with multi-talents is beautifully humbling. This is a Joni Morning...hopefully a Joni Day. I'm thinking of For Free, for example. So why is she still known as a folk singer? Because she started out that way and became well known and very popular in certain circles of the world who later dropped her but who gained influence in the media, I guess. Just my guess, though. I can so relate to your excitement about finding out your friend knows about Joni and appreciates her! It doesn't happen too often, or is it just us, thinking that we are an exquisite lot of Joniphiles?
