I was born too late and a little too far west. I was only 5 when that amazing gig was occurring. There was an essence in the air at times of those times that gave me a taste of it all and through my life, I have gravitated towards those with similar ideals. Australia experienced similar events that might have sufficed like the Sunbury Festival but, I was born too late for those too. Out of those events and that culture, the community of Nimbin in far northern New South Wales was born - I have yet to visit the place but, I have heard that it is in decline these days and overrun with harder drugs. Just like Laurel Canyon I guess. Nimbin was a Hippy haven, a community of creative souls, assisted by pot and LSD. But to see the original in all its glory will always be a fantasy of mine. Now I am happy to connect with those who experienced the real thing. Australia's culture has often mirrored that of the US so, we got a double dose in a way. I urge you to try a taste of 60s/70s Australia with songs like, The Real Thing by Russell Morris, Turn Up Your Radio by The Masters Apprentice, Eagle Rock by Daddy Cool and the classic, Judgement by Chain. Feel free to reminisce anytime. Mark in Sydney ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2007 10:21:27 +0200 From: "Oddmund Kaarevik" Subject: What a great read ! This was such a great read ! Thanks a lot Les and Miguel Arrondo ! It offers a great overview of her musical career 'till 1983 + it offers som interesting details. Imgaine that,Joni meeting up with her daughter, backstage in 1968, it almost breaks my heart, it must have been so strange to her... I'm very happy that Joni choice her frredom as an artist and a painter, but I'm sure I can never imagine what pain she had to go through in adopting away her only daughter... Miracles over miracle - they're now reunited, but no wonder they have issues. Who hasn't. I guess, Joni sums it up best herself: The reason I'm very private is because I'm very open. I'm either intimate or I shut up." Accordingly, her conversation, like some of her songs, can be burdened with sincerity.... When asked about her relationships with her daughter, she admits they have issues and that there is a lot of forgiving to be done. I think many just have said; "Oh everything is great, we're so happy together" And that is what I cherish so high with Joni, as said (to us) WE are (STARDUST) & : "thinner-skinned breed, who have been able to follow my pilgrimage in themselves"... Joni has since I discovered her talked directly to my heart, and continue to do so, right now, right here... Love to you all Joni-lovers And Mags: thanks for the CBC clip I really enjoyed the clip where Joni was talking about "Bot sides now" ... Our Lady of Duality was, of course, greatly humiliated, by being compared to Gordon Lightfoot and another candaian female singer-songwriter. I think Elvis Costello has grasped the core, saying that she is being compared to the wrong people. I mean who would compare Bob Dylan to some average american singer-songwriter (they would Inever get away with it), who he was supposed to have had some major impact on. But I kind of feel sorry for Joni taking this crusade hereself. It makes her seem more arrogant than I believe she is. She is great. In my opnion, the greatest. There 's nothing to argue that. I wish she just, for once, could see that we are many who see it that way, oh our dear Joni og shadows and lights and the rest of it... She sings that song with so much pain and emotion that I could never quite believe this was an empathetic song for a friend of hers. Most of all, I feel so completely grateful that she is in my life. And, through our common love of Joni, I have found so many kindred spirits and wonderful people on our digest. According to the info published later, the family that adopted Kelly did not know who the birth mother was, and so it is unlikely that they took her to see Joni. That meeting at Mariposa must have been a total coincidence then. Or maybe Joni just needed to believe the little girl named Kelly was her daughter. I am sad about the passing of this jazz drummer and innovator Max Roach. Much as his technique drew from a lot of influences notably hornman Clifford Brown, I think Roach has defined his own beat and in his own terms before "Freedom Now Suite" with former wife Abbey Lincoln. Along with Gene Krupa, Chick Webb and Art Blakey, Roach is/was an original. I heard of Sara Gazarek because I saw a used cd of hers in my fave record store in Chapel Hill and I like the warmth of her voice. Too bad she never really became a household name. But then so has other equally talented singers ranging from Kristin Korb to Dominique Eade. Made you wonder for every Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves and Jane Monheit, there are countless others who deserve wider exposure. Small Joni story: While aboard Cathay Pacific from Auckland to Hong Kong, I glanced at the airline's in-flight music and saw Joni's "A Case of You" in the Easy Listening radio program stream.
