I remember hearing/seeing that most of the album was recorded with Herbie, Wayne, and Brian, so I was surprised and delighted to see that it was mostly the 1998 band. Greg Leisz is one of the most valuable session musician on the planet today... he is, seemingly, on half of the albums that come out each week. Such a soulful player. I really can't wait to hear this new material!!! thanks again, Gus _____________________________________________ > Date: Sat, 11 Aug 2007 15:38:21 -0600 > From: "Les Irvin" > Subject: More information on Shine > > This from Concord Record's "Tech Copy" release: > - ------------- > > JONI MITCHELL: SHINE > > One Week Last Summer (Instrumental) 4:58 > Alto Sax: Bob Sheppard > Piano and all other Instrumentation: Joni Mitchell ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2007 13:22:46 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: Sound Byte of Joni on Radio - 73-74 Portland Civic Auditorium Wow, Laura, thanks! Honey, you turn me on to Joni on the radio! Gave me shivers. Can you imagine driving into town with a dark cloud above you, and a commercial for a Joni concert comes on the radio? "WXXX is proud to announce an evening with Joni Mitchell on October 1, 2007, at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts....." I would drive right into a ditch! You may say I'm a dreamer..... California music scene in the 60's through the end of the 70's. I had mentioned on the list reading the book, "Hotel California" and was very interested in seeing this documentary. After watching the DVD, I must say the DVD is miles and miles and miles better than the book. The book, in my opinion, is written very subjectively. Mere opinions are stated as fact, quotes are taken out of context, and you can tell which musicians the author likes and which he doesn't. When I'm reading a bio, the last thing I want to hear is YOUR opinion (good OR bad) on the person at hand. I'll form my own opinion thank you very much. You really have to be careful with bios as many are written with the author either kissing ass the whole way through or putting down the person he is writing about the whole way through, both of which I can't stand. Be objective man. Anyway, the DVD starts off in the mid 60's describing the California music scene citing Bob Dylan as an influence (the Beatles too as far as the Byrds and Crosby go) and focusing on the Byrds. It goes through the years discussing CSN/Y, Neil Young alone, Joni, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, the members of the Eagles floating around before they actually formed the band (and then later when they did form the band), etc etc. There are many appearances by the musicians who actually were a part of this scene who are more informing than any author could be. David Crosby was rather enlightening as far as the whole scene went. My favorite parts in the DVD were Joni's parts (they showed what looked like it could could been the Big Sur Festival in which the reporter must have asked Joni backstage about politics or something of that nature given her answer which I really enjoyed) showing a couple of clips or talking about Blue, CSN/Y clips (including a "Teach Your Children" clip which I had never seen before from their '74 tour), Neil Young's parts, Buffalo Springfield's parts and the actual interviews with Crosby and Nash and so forth. I also enjoyed when they introduced a new musician into the "scene" because they would list his/her name, show a couple of clips, and go into it. I really liked when Stephen Stills was introduced because he was shown in what looked like could have been from his home or maybe his studio performing a song on acoustic in an intimate, candid setting. My favorite quote in the whole DVD was Crosby's concerning Neil Young. After Stills and Ertegun wanted Neil in the band, Crosby and Nash went to meet him first. Crosby said Neil played him about the best 4 or 5 songs he had ever heard in his life and "if he was a girl, I would have kissed him." As far as Joni goes, she does get a lot exposure in this DVD so I'd recommend it to any of you good folks. Quite interesting if I may say so myself. So in a snap, this DVD starts off in the 60's talking about the "good times", the pot, the music, Laurel Canyon, etc. The mood changes after Charles Manson hits. Then it slowly illustrates the disintegration of the 60's mindset with the Manson killings, cocaine, money, which all becomes the 70's, etc etc. All in all, a very interesting DVD, with plenty of interviews, concert clips, and PLENTY OF JONI! Anything more I could say would only sound redundant or wouldn't ring as much as if you see it yourself. - -Monika ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2007 12:52:00 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Just in case you can't wait til the 25th http://tinyurl.com/yp7e8v Bob NP: Ani, "Here For Now" - ------------------------------------------------------------ The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain proprietary, business-confidential and/or privileged material. I feel the need to defend our lady simply because this is exactly what I expected the album to be..These are the first lyrics I have read in forever that actually spit in the face of the maniacs who run this planet..I am proud to the point of tears..thank you Joni ..thank you for every album past but most importantly for this upcoming one..This "cromudgeon" thing I guess refers to her age well for my money a nearly 64 year old woman has the voice of a loud as hell 29 year old jersey boy..I will play this album..full blast as close to the white house as I can get.. In this day in age, I think the lyrics fit perfectly with what is going on in the world. A good number of people recognize the atrocities of today and aren't happy with it. Joni is voicing this so eloquently as she does. I know the world is not a shiny, happy place overall. I do however think good exists behind the veils of tragedy, dishonesty, and lack of courtesy though. I also think the lyrics reflect hope. Though people are constantly complaining about things that seem like they will never change (or end as far as the war is concerned) there is still hope among us. I think Joni sees that too. I don't see the lyrics as bitter or resentful or anything like that. Just as honest. - -Mon ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2007 01:34:23 -0400 From: "starvingartist" Subject: Re: Shine Lyrics..My take - ----- Original Message ----- From: "KEVIN DOHENY" To: Sent: Wednesday, August 15, 2007 10:56 PM Subject: Shine Lyrics..My take I called her a curmudgeon, not sure waht a cromudgeon is, and I was certainly NOT referring to her age. Although I'm quite a bit younger than Joni, I've been enjoying her music for since about a decade before you were born. And that's meaningless, except to say I was not calling her a crabby OLD lady, just crabby. No the world isn't always a "shiny happy place" but it often is, and anyone who has even a rudimentary grasp of history can't deny that it's getting better all the time. Does that mean one shouldn't rail against injustice and violence?: certainly not, but you gotta mix it up with a little faith and hope and love (as another Jersey boy keeps reminding us with his lyrics.} . ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2007 #250 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
