In a romantic vision, I'd love: a) to see Joni create her own, independent, label (and there's many, many options these days for succeeding that way today) and/or b) to witness Joni join forces with Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records I work with a young musician, of the highest artistic calibre, and integrity. She has the ideals and spirit of rock originals in the '60s. We look to Joni and Ani as models of how to move in the crazy world that is today's recording industry. Merveilleux! Je m'abaisse devant votre grandeur! (Sherelle, chere etudiante, can you translate that, s'il vous plait?) I'm not very techy, but I downloaded them easy as pie. And enjoy them I did! Thank you for the gift of your extra time. I tell you I'm very hungry now for a completer fare! ; ) Can't wait until September 25th. I've already asked for the day off. My boss wrote back: "I am sure that you will spend the day off waiting in line, having camped there the night before, to buy the cd. It's great that all these "retired" people are back on." (Not sure whom else she is referring to....) Between your artwork and now this, I think we can get you this special visa status I learned about in a recent immigration workshop I had to attend. The handout read: Extraordinary Ability (EB-1) (N) (No job offer necessary) a. Individual can self petition b. Alien must prove that he/she will continue to work in the area of expertise c. Sustained national or international acclaim d. Heavy documentation with many reference letters And in my hand-written notes, it says: "Einstein visa -- different and unique" I'm sure Dave and I -- and you know there may be more --would write letters for you! (Congrats on your great show, Dave!) Bon weekend, everyJonibody! Shining, Patti P. Hi folks. I decided to extract the little samples of songs from Shine that was previewed in Amanda Ghost's BBC interview and compile a sampler of the upcoming album, Shine. There are samples of six songs of varying length. One of the tracks' names doesn't correspond with the track list that Bob supplied. It is the instrumental that Joni called, "Gratitude" so that's the title I went with. It is probably track 1 or track two - One Week Last Summer or This Place. The file is only about 12MB. You can pick it up here http://arunaurl.com/k12 Enjoy a taste of Shine. Mark in Sydney _________________________________________________________________ Don't get caught with egg on your face. I've been burning the midnight oil, so, please excuse a few redundancies in my original posting - the essence of which, to use the sporting term, was to envision Joni and Ani as a record label "dream team" Righteous Babe has the distribution network to get physical CDs anywhere and everywhere, and it's also modern, and with it online; plus, the company is as socially conscious as it is financially successful now, if the Canucks could just get the right offense to combine with goalie Roberto Luongo, we really could get ourselves back to the Garden! peace, Ad ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2007 13:24:04 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Starbuck's Reckless Daughter Beside signing to Starbucks, Joni's options were: 1)sign to a major label (all large corporations/conglomerates) 2)sign to an established indie label 3)create her own label 4)release via internet only She has had enough of the major labels, who are not too interested in selling product that does not go double platinum. An indie label might be an alternative. Their resources for promotion would be less, and they would still use conventional methods of distribution. Creating her own label could be very costly, especially the promotion, more yet if videos are made. The chances of breaking even might be slim. Despite internet's growing market share, the majority of sales are still physical CDs. The Starbucks option really makes the most sense. She feels she has an important album, and she wants alot of people to hear it. Starbucks can really concentrate their efforts since they haven't yet built up a roster of artists. Seeing that McCartney's album went to #3, and will no doubt garner a gold record must look attractive. I'm sure she wants her record to be a success. As to the sins of Starbucks, I doubt she was aware of them. Judging from her statements over the years, her political outlook seems more intuitive than based on being well informed. Yes, it is a compromise. If you want to be involved with the big players in the music industry, you will be dealing with corporations. You can bet creative control was first on her list, plus she got a two album deal; most record deals hook you for five (or more). We all have to deal with corporations. They make the cars. They produce most of the food. They make the electricity that runs your computer, and the parts for it, too. I encourage everyone to avoid corporate monoliths whenever possible, but I can't condemn Joni for her choice, since I can only guess at her options. If it turns out she has stock in Haliburton, I will certainly decry her hypocrisy, but I don't think that will ever be the case. RR ps one thing you can say for Starbucks-they know this is an anti-war album, that it has left-leaning political content, but they are still putting it out. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2007 16:36:05 -0400 From: "Rob Argento" Subject: RE: Starbuck's Reckless Daughter In Swedish we call this sort of thing "a storm in a Tea cup". Snipping Bob's superb email: I think if we all tried to live as ethically as we'd like we, well, couldn't live or would be so constrained we wouldn't have much of a life. I HATE myself for shopping at Barnes and Noble, when I do; I HATE that the record industry is so screwed up Joni Mitchell has to record with Starbuck's; I HATE lots of things about this world. I guess what I'm saying is that right-minded people try to do the best they can. However, whilst I was thinking about the "FTR" thread and the importance of context that my mind wandered to TtM. I suddenly realised that the first line sets up the whole tone of the song "I didn't know I drank such a lot till..." - this is Joni PISSED! With that in mind the rest of the song makes sense - it is not the tight, cogent prose that we are used to but a looser, amalgam of ideas and phrases reflecting someone in a state of inebriation who is also hacked off by the moody silence of her lover. In that context even the chicken swawking makes sense as I can now visualise it - a scene that would not look out of place in almost any town centre on Friday/Saturday night - at least in the UK! What got me onto it was I had to concur with others that FTR "power and the glory", "hammers, boards and nails" image does have a heavy religious undertone though I still feel the primary image is a run-down abandoned theatre as a metaphor for the transitory pleasure of fame. Then it is not surprising when Joni operates in so many level - witness my previous posting on HOSL and especially "chains me with his serpent to that Ethiopian wall" - again this has a religious reference. As I was on a roll I remembered that anther posting said they could not understand the line from "Case of You" - why would you want to drink a case of you but still be on my feet". I see this as Joni's way of putting someone down bigtime. This shows that Joni can be ruthless: "constantly in the darkness...where's that at?...if you want me I'll be in the bar"; the image of being two-faced (bitter and sweet/ darkness and light). In contrast to Strange Boy" where love is the strongest poison and medicine of all the "love" that exists between her and her lover is now as strong as diet coke!
