[Motitan@aol.com] Big Yellow Taxi heard tonight in Santa Rosa ["Lori Fye" Subject: Our Lady of Duality Dear Jim and Joni-philes I read your essay "Our Lady of duality", yesterday. I found it, by coinsidense, only by browsing the gallery and following the link connected to your name. And there it was in the JMDL library. And what a great read, I must say ! Both funny and clevererly written, your text provides insightful understanding to the artist Joni Mitchell and what she stands for. I think you have grasped something that most critics don't see, I love how you compare the early Joni with the Late Joni. The Jazz-Joni with the folk-Joni, they way you argue that one of them denpends on the other, and it's very unfair to compare them, that she is an artist that has gone through many changes, and evolving into a great artist, something that would be impossible if she just froze her 1971 sound and themes. Having discovered Joni quite late, in 1999, I've never had to compare who she has become with who she was. I fell in love with the smokey voice and a bit bitter social critisist, so all her career from 1968 onwards has just come upon me as a bonus. I believe your essay can work as a mind broadener to tha ones that has froze in some pattern, and a road for them to see all of Joni. So many thanks for your great essay ! Best ! I fell in love with the smokey voice - ------------------------------------------------ I agree that Joni's voice has changed. That is obvious (though I still do like it!). But it is sort of funny to me when people cling to Joni's "soprano voice." See, if you think about it, she didn't sing soprano all the time all that much. I would say the only album of hers that is truly sung in a high, soprano voice pretty much the whole way through is "Ladies of the Canyon." I mean, STAS, Joni's first album, is sung very, very low (with the exception of her hitting those high notes here and there). And of course C&S on had her singing a bit lower (with her hitting high notes here and there of course) but nobody was bitching or complaining then........(well until THOSL hit but for different reasons though it is a brilliant album!!)..... Anyway, I suppose I got a bit off topic but that is something I have thought about. Pardon me for my senseless rambling as I worked till midnight last night and haven't gotten a good night's sleep since Wednesday night....but anyhow on topic, I do enjoy this article. I guess our promo strategies worked: posters all around town (designed by our own Mark in Sydney), newspaper article, mailers and multiple email lists. We began with Shadows and Light, an arrangement culled from the HOSL version but modified where it gets impossible for three voices to pull off. It was an ambitious opener partly because it's hard to sing when your adrenaline is pumping and partly because many people in the audience have no idea that Joni wrote music like that. We segued right into Free Man in Paris which was cool; that's a tune the public have all heard and nice easy pop for the ears. The girls sounded awesome on the chorus harmonies. Then into a nice relaxed California, with rhythm section and right into a version of Carey with Duncan the drummer laying down a nice "one drop" groove. Down to You followed; this one we've been doing a while so it's pretty dialed in and the girls sounded great on the "ooh love is gone" harmonies. Then one of our favorites: Harry's House. Barnaby and I both take solos on the Centerpiece blues section and the whole vibe was nice and dreamy, especially the end where the Rhodes octaves are cascading and the cymbals are playing a metric counterpoint. Coyote next and Duncan, our new drummer and the finest in all of San Diego county, laid down a beautiful feel behind the famous guitar riff with Evan, our 17 year old bassist, playing the Jaco parts note for note. Robin got through the wordiest of the wordiest songs with aplomb and we immediately followed it with the other wordiest tune, Amelia. Evan switched to second guitar and we both had phasey chorus sounds playing the guitar parts in tandem, stereo panned, with Barnaby adding distant vibes to simulate the texture of the Hejira recording. It totally worked. We ended the set with Dry Cleaner which we stretch out on and the background singers joined us for lots of "that cat's got luck". On the break we spoke to some people in the audience and confirmed that it was all coming across really well. Set two we were settled in and relaxed and began with Duncan laying down a "surdo" groove, a Brazilian samba feel but from the authentic street samba tradition. I joined him on pandeiro, a Brazilian tambourine, and this all led into Dreamland which is a gas to play and sing. Robin sang for ten years in a samba band and has the feel for that music down (actually better than Joni does if I may be so bold). Help Me followed with all the harmony parts sounding beautiful because we had our female backup singers. At the end we vamp and the drums take a solo which lifted the energy nicely. Then we all left the stage except Robin and Barnaby who did a breathtaking rendition of Blue. You could hear a pin drop in the house. Cherokee Louise followed, an arrangement that has taken months to evolve. It's a very hip song anyway but we wanted to do our own thing with it. We were a little worried about "yanks her to her knees" line in front of conservative Christian Fallbrook people but lightning did not strike us, and as we've discussed before, hardly anyone actually hears the words anyway. The into Night Ride Home which came across beautifully; Robin and I have been doing this as a duo for many years but with the band there's a pad, impressionistic mallet and brushwork from the drums and rich bass. Again the audience was put into a spell. Driving through the desert at night is an image everyone in southern California can relate to. We debuted Talk to Me next giving it a sort of Police treatment rhythmically and letting Evan's fretless bass stretch out at the end. Not a deep Joni tune lyrically but really fun to play. Robin and I did two songs just the two of us next: For the Roses and A Case of You. Both sounded great, especially the latter, with Robin getting totally inside the song and weaving a spell across the whole room. I've figured out a way to play FTR in standard tuning with every note as Joni played it and do the dulcimer part of ACOY on guitar. In fact I was able to do this show with only four guitars, down from six previously, so that is a little triumph for me in guitar corner. We ended with Robin's new arrangement of Woodstock, 14 mins 15 secs of epic music traveling from the lone child of God walking along the road towards the enormous festival and ending up feet from the stage in a rock and roll acid trip (no brown acid though). Other than the conceptual framework the whole song was improvised and the energy on stage was electrifying. It totally worked and the crowd leapt to their feet. Here it is: http:// www.yousendit.com/download/elNMZGVlYSt3TGcwTVE9PQ For encores we did the crowd pleaser BYT and ended with Circle Game with 300 people singing each chorus with us and the backup singers Peggy and Brittney taking verses along with Robin. It truly was the best show this band has done in 18 months of evolution and twice the crowd size we have ever filled, and this in little rural Fallbrook no less! I believe we may have a CD's worth of material from the show in releasable form some time in the future. I'll leave you with Woodstock for now... love Dave P.S Thanks again to Mark for the posters. (Seems to me > a little like stage pronounciation...) I've noticed that Joni's enunciation in the early days was very precise, in both her singing and her spoken word. If you listen to some of her early performances, the stage banter, either on TV shows or in some of the bootleg concerts around, she always articulated very well. I don't know if that has something to do with the times or if she was taking great care to speak perfectly to that she would be understood. I just think people spoke better in general back then. There was no mumbling. If you listen to newscasts from the 60s or even earlier, the news presenters always spoke very clearly. I'm not sure if this makes sense, but people were a bit more formal back then than they are now. There were a number of people in her vicinity who came with her down from the back room or upper office or whatever it was at the Mendel, where she'd likely gone to get a break from the crowds and reporters clamouring for her attention. I have the news on here behind me and just saw an upcoming story about a "coyote" running loose in Cleveland. No regrets coyote. They just don't want you running loose.... Anyway, I just remembered a random comment my sister made the other day concerning Joni. I brought up Joni for whatever reason to my sister (she doesn't care when I bring up topics such as Joni Mitchell but I still don't cease to do so). I don't remember what I said but here's what my sister said, obviously teasing me: (I found it funny, let's share a laugh, shall we?) "Ah, Joni Mitchell. What an amazing woman. Bad-ass too. I mean you think, and there's Catwoman, Wonder Woman....and Joni Mitchell." - -Monika, just spewing out random trivialities ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2007 23:03:56 -0700 From: "Lori Fye" Subject: Big Yellow Taxi heard tonight in Santa Rosa Sung by Gale Mead (http://www.galemead.com/) at The Last Day Saloon ( http://www.lastdaysaloon.com/), Gale amazed us all by hitting those really high notes (and the low notes too). BYT is on Gale's cd, "Live at Jessel's" (which a couple of us purchased at tonight's show), although my friends and I think Gale sounds better live. A very enjoyable evening by Gale and local guitarists.
