Send in your original essay, short story, poem, etc. (fact or fiction) with Joni as it's primary theme. For example, you can send an account of how you were first exposed to Joni's music, the first time you went to a JM concert, a poem about Joni, and so on. The most well-written submissions will win a copy of "Joni Mitchell: The Complete Poems and Lyrics" and many other great prizes. Three winning essays will be chosen by vote and published in "The Written Word" section of the JMHP. They will also be hand-delivered to Joni herself! Deadline is February 20th. Well my brother and my sister are going to Seattle during the first week of August. Since they will be away not bothering me, I figure I have to do something that I normally don't do. I will be home almost all alone (my Mom will be home but she has MS and is only in bed in her room, and my Dad is home for about 20 minutes every two days or so....). So I think I may have a little get together at my house (outdoors, maybe a BBQ, nothing big as I don't have much $$ to spend on this and I don't want a hectic cleanup the day after--just a few select friends). That being said, I have to have music. I was thinking about making 10 mixed cds for the occasion in which I will be in charge of the music. No one would even be allowed near the radio...off limits! Anyway, I've got to throw some Joni on the cds if I do indeed have friends over. What songs would you put on there for this sort of thing? Nobody's going to be dancing or anything of that nature so no need to worry about that. So far I'm thinking: - -Free Man In Paris, DJRD, perhaps Help Me or Raised On Robbery, the live MOA Big Yellow Taxi, maybe In France They Kiss On Main Street...... Any suggestions? -Monika NP: Certain Girl- the Yardbirds ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2007 10:49:16 -0400 From: "Marianne Rizzo" Subject: Covers 90, Takada Ren Hi. . . I know when I'm playing Joni in my car when a friend or two are there and they are talking and talking and talking it does sort of irritate me because I do want to listen to the music (though I would never tell them so!) and hope maybe they get something out of it. But then again, I couldn't go a whole night without listening to Joni! You are right. It may be somewhat of a distraction when Joni's songs come on but the Joni songs would be spread out through the variety of mixed cds. So you'd hear one here and another one a bit later on and so on. I wouldn't dare put THOSL or DJRD in my cd player at the party playing the whole way through. That right there would have me glued to the seat closest to the radio and being very antisocial.....which would have me come off as very distant and probably a bit rude to my friends.....though I wouldn't mean it like that... - -Monika ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2007 12:50:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: The JMDL... - --- Motitan@aol.com wrote: > I'm curious about a few things concering the JMDL > and YOU! (as if it's not > obvious....but please be very, very > particular for your own reason/s) Some time ago, I was wondering how long I had been on the jmdl and thought it might have been since '98, but I found my first post and it was Monday, July 5/99. I found the jmdl through jonimitchell.com. When I first got internet access at work back in 98 or 99, the first thing I did was, you guessed it, do a search on Joni Mitchell. That turned up jonimitchell.com which, in turn, led to jmdl.com. I didn't sign up right away. In fact, I think I signed up earlier but didn't post and then unsubbed because there may have been a flame war going on at the time, which freaked me right out. When I did sign up again and made my first post, I must have lurked for a few days or so to check things out before posting. It looks like there might have been another flame war happening at the time, judging by what I said in my first post. There were more name-calling flame wars back then, as I recall, the type of people who would accuse you of not being a real Joni fan because you didn't have the ESP to realize that a bunch of people were going to show up somewhere together. And there were those who believed everything Joni did was sacred and no one should question it and who would react very strongly if anyone suggested that Joni was somehow less than perfect. Of course, nowadays, all of us are perfect or perhaps a little wiser. It was great to find out that there were other freaks in the world that GOT Joni And Colin - wow! Good to see you back! Play real loud and let us know how it went! Sherelle Dave wrote: Dear all, Here's a a shameless plug for our band playing all Joni music this Saturday July 21st at 7.30 in concert at the Hilltop Center, Fallbrook CA. We have a core quintet plus two backup singers and it's a tight well-rehearsed ensemble of players who LOVE Joni music. Some original arrangements and some note for note renditions (down to the smallest detail!) As usual we're tackling some challenging tunes but you just gotta hear the choral Shadows and Light to believe it...it ain't the simplified Persuasions version! We've added Blue, Talk to Me, FMIP, Cherokee Louise, Amelia (with two swirling guitars and vibes) and an arrangement of Woodstock that is Bill Frisell-meets-U2 since the last show. The finest drummer in our area is with us this time and he and the extra singers take the whole thing to a new level. If you are in driving distance of Fallbrook CA which is between San Diego and Riverside off the I-15 we would love to have you come and hear what we've been developing for two years. It will certainly be the best $15 you ever spent. Tickets and more info at http:// robinadler.com/ or email me off list for directions or questions. If you can't make it we'll play really loud so you can hear from where you live.... cheers, Dave _________________________________________________________________ http://liveearth.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jul 2007 17:59:46 +0000 From: "Sherelle Smith" Subject: Re: The JMDL... I can't remember if it was 1996 or 1997. I didn't have a computer yet but I did have a WebTV and through that I communicated online. I had bought the tape Shadows and Light and had fallen in love with Joni's music all over again. I was looking for those who felt the same way. I remember all of us dreaming and pining away for a chance to hear her perform live again. At that time, she had sworn off touring and performing and seemed pretty resolute about it. So we would share our Joni dreams and make believe concerts. Those who had seen her in the past would recount their stories and we would all do the collective email "sigh" as we read them. When she did decide to tour, it was one of the happiest times on this digest! It was like a dream come true! We were all in utter disbelief! Wally Breese was still alive and we were all fixated on Dollywood paraphenalia if I recall. The Internet was pretty new to us and so misunderstandings would arise and tempers would flare. We begged each other's forgiveness and tried to learn to be better to each other while understanding how to live within the Internet community. We were there when Joni and Kiluaren found each other. We lost one of our own in a car crash and two others to cancer. I respectfully apologize if I omitted anyone's passing. We stood by each other through every kind of trial and tribulation and with Joni's music as our bond, became deep and fast friends to this day. We created the NJC tag to keep the peace and a separate digest for those who only wanted all things Joni (and who could blame them?) We had the first Jonifest in Pittsburgh, PA and it was a surreal experience. We did a project called "A Tape of You" where everyone who wanted to contributed their talent by doing cover versions of Joni's music. A dear Joni friend sent me a small tape player because I could not afford to buy one at the time and I recorded my songs a cappella in the bathroom while rebounding from a case of pneummonia. That's how bad I wanted to be a part of the project. It gave birth to my desire to write and record music again. This is a good place....
