If only there wasn't this damn big puddle in the way, I'd be there. I have had the privilege of hearing an early draft of S&L and it is magnificent. You'll also get to see my artwork on the poster (another shameless plug). It is sure to become a collector's item. Good luck, Dave, Robin and the gang. I'm there in spirit. Hi Monika. You're such a curious soul. I originally joined in 1997 or 1998 when I was at university. It was the first time I used a computer. They had 24 hour access to computers at the residential college I was living in - Toad Hall. So, I used to stay up late when it was quiet and surf the web and play games. I must have searched for Joni Mitchell and stumbled across the site/list. Once I moved off campus, I no longer had internet access and therefore dropped off the list. I rejoined in about 2002/3 when I got broadband at home. I guess that makes me an old fart too. Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2007 21:06:43 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Joni and her guitar tunings... As far back as the Second Fret appearances, she said * she has 'families' of related tunings. Sometimes she'd play 2 or 3 songs that kept the re-tuning to a minimum. Then, she'd tell a story while re-tuning. * She forgot them and (sometimes) couldn't play a song until * Joel Bernstein "taught" her the song again. (!) She had no notation, if I remember correctly (never a safe assumption). This is reason the original "song books" are usually wrong. Especially for songs written on guitar. >1. When did you sign up to this list/how long have you been here?> I guess it's been 10 years gone by, now. >2. How did you find the list?> Muller said it best, in Nawlins during 2000. He said something like, >>When I first discovered what a search engine does, the 2nd search I made was on "Joni Mitchell". The first was for "naked cheerleaders".>> >3. Why did you sign up?> Although everyone in North America can sing "Circle Game" and "Both Sides Now", I didn't know anyone who "got" the amazing depth of Joni's talents. I'm thinking about "For the Roses", "Blue", "Hissing", "Don Juan", "Hejira", and "Mingus". It's great to be around people who can finish sentences like, "Couldn't ya just love me / like ya..." Jim L. Monika asked, >Does anyone how she remembered all her tunings? I mean, can you think of an article where she's talking about her "special" way of remembering? I'd imagine she'd associate a particular tuning to something else to remember but I'm curious to the details.> ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2007 22:13:09 EDT From: Motitan@aol.com Subject: Joni songs for everyone? Well my brother and my sister are going to Seattle during the first week of August. Since they will be away not bothering me, I figure I have to do something that I normally don't do. I will be home almost all alone (my Mom will be home but she has MS and is only in bed in her room, and my Dad is home for about 20 minutes every two days or so....). So I think I may have a little get together at my house (outdoors, maybe a BBQ, nothing big as I don't have much $$ to spend on this and I don't want a hectic cleanup the day after--just a few select friends). That being said, I have to have music. I was thinking about making 10 mixed cds for the occasion in which I will be in charge of the music. No one would even be allowed near the radio...off limits! Anyway, I've got to throw some Joni on the cds if I do indeed have friends over. What songs would you put on there for this sort of thing? Nobody's going to be dancing or anything of that nature so no need to worry about that. So far I'm thinking: - -Free Man In Paris, DJRD, perhaps Help Me or Raised On Robbery, the live MOA Big Yellow Taxi, maybe In France They Kiss On Main Street...... Any suggestions? -Monika NP: Certain Girl- the Yardbirds ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2007 22:32:49 -0400 From: Deb Messling Subject: Re: The JMDL... When did the list start, Les? Because I signed up pretty darn early. If I missed my tenth anniversary, I'll be pissed. I don't remember how I found out about the Joni list, but it may have been through a reference on Humans, the Bruce Cockburn list. As soon as I heard about JMDL, signing up was a no-brainer. Sometime in the late nineties we got the internet and my hubby at the time looked up Joni Mitchell for me, and that led to this list. Like many of you, I didn't know anyone else who was as moved by Joni's music as I was, who found it so incredible. The day I got by first PC. Until that day I had known not one soul who liked Joni. The PC and the list changed my life radically. For the better. Incredibly so. The downside: whilst I knew nothing about my two favourite singers, (or very little) Joni and Carly, and knew no one else who liked them, they both remained fantasy figures-perfect. I found that not only did they have feet of clay but so did their fans. They both(Carly and Joni) helped me survive my young days and whilst I miss the magic and mystery of them before the PC, I would not turn back the clock. - -- bw colin www.colinknits.blogspot.com/ www.tantra-apso.com www.designyourownsweater.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2007 23:15:49 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: The JMDL... I have been trying to reply to this "inquiring minds want to know" thread, but have been slammed. Getting ready to go back out for 9 days thru the Northeast, including Boston area, Ct., Schenectady area, Pa. and then on to Traverse City Michigan. I joined the list not to long before the video taped gathering in Burbank. My mom passed in 1996 and after that I dove into the computer and of course one of the first things I looked for was Joni Mitchell and participated with various online boards about Joni. I started gathering unreleased music and live recordings by her and eventually came to the mother ship. I submitted a story about a love affair I had in Paris with a lady named Julie who turned me on to Joni's music and the magic tunings. Wally Breese sent me a signed copy of the lyrics book cause he liked my story and because he was such a beautiful man. It also led me my first Jonifest in Topsfield and the rest as they say is...music sweet music and such wonderful friends. I tried to search for the stories but I think they are buried in the archives somewhere. My best friend David Mingus (who's in the hospital right now, so ya'll send some good vibes) was an absolute Joni Mitchell nut. He didn't have a computer, so I would print all the information on Joni's bio pages and give them to him. It was the beginning of 1998 when Wally Breese started a writing contest, a fictional story about Joni, but you had to be a member of the JMDL in order to enter. My friend David loves to write, so he wanted me to sign up for the JMDL so he could enter his short story. There were some great stories submitted by the JMDL, and Bill Dollinger's hilarious story won (I think). Anyway, I got hooked on the JMDL and eventually Mingus got a computer and joined the list too. I don't post that often anymore, but I try to read a lot of the post.
