From what I understand, Dave, For The Roses refers to the Roses Tournament horse races. There are references to horse racing and maybe Joni was commenting on show business being like a horse race with trophies for success. Just a stab in the dark. Loose atmosphere, the song versions are different, more long psychedelic intros. To me only the greats can play so many concerts and make significant changes each time (just try listening to Jimi's songs and you'll never hear it twice the same). Even "Woodstock" includes the riff from Jumpin' Jack Flash this time. The gatefold picture in the same humorous vein was her mooning at the industry! Met up with a bearded dragon lizard named Lizzie who is into Joni. He loves Coyote. Came up close to me in his terrarium, got up on a rock and tipped his hole ear at me while I was playing the song. Played him Sisotowbell Lane and Ladies of the Canyon too. He loves that tuning. Next stop, Toronto, for dinner with Catherine. My oldest son and his friend are going to see The White Stripes in concert there. Came across a Target ad. Opened it up to check out the electronics sales. There's a picture of a medicine bottle nearly 1/4 of the page large. It says, Now, FREE at Target! Liquid flavorings. Add one of 19 tasty flavorings like cherry, watermelon, or even chocolate-banana pie to any liquid medicine for free. Nothing could be worse for my senses and stomach to think of a chemical and sugar ladened, thick, awful tasting potion with chocolate-banana pie artificial flavorings early in the morning. " What now?," I thought in disgust. "Target gets into the Starbucks business and now wants to add a similar theme with the pharmaceuticals." What stupidity will they try next is well beyond me! Such a far cry from those Chelsea mornings when the taste of milk and honey is the greatest in the world, as the senses get filled with the smells and feel of freshly peeled ripe oranges as sunshine softly radiating it's warm glow all over your face, shoulders and body. jean - --------------------------------- It's here! As most Americans do, I too take my daily recommended dosages, they say, so I can pull through another day with sane body, heart, soul, and mind. "Okay," I say. Not complaining, just yet. The only folks I know who are not on medication are my three sisters. How we got this far, I often ponder in confusion. Fact or Fiction? Has anyone ever seen the old French film from around 1928, 'The Rules Of The Game?" Directed by Jean Renoir, son of August Renoir, the unbelievably gifted and wise French painter. Jean Renoir acts in the movie himself and there's a scene where he's speaking with a lover, I believe. He states, even way back then, how the phamaceutical big-whig financiers were preparing to take us away from nature and more into chemicals. In that scene, he was speaking in utter despair about many of societies sad, ill woes. How Renoir knew back then what we are going through now is a question I've had for quite sometime. That was back in the twenties. What was going on in France back then that he had the vision in order to lament the pharmaceutical business strategies for the future? Kind of like Rachel Carson with The Silent Spring. jean jeannie wrote: Was reading this morning's paper over a cup of coffee and some breakfast cookies. Came across a Target ad. No, I think that's it. Do you remember the postscript in the movie, "Annie Hall"? The filmmaker quoted an old joke as a summary of What It All Means. Woody Allen said >>A guy talks to his doctor, says, "Doc, my brother-in-law is crazy. He thinks he's a chicken." >>Doctor says, "Have him take one of these pills in the morning, he'll stop having delusions." >>"What?" the guy says. >>"He won't think he's a chicken anymore." >>"Oh, no. I can't do that," the guy says. "I need the eggs." >>I think that sums up how I feel about relationships. They don't work; they're crazy; but in the end, we keep going back because... we need the eggs. A nonsensical reward is better than staring into the abyss, eh? Jim L. Once upon a time, there existed a very clever, unique, and humorous television show named "Ally McBeal" which I loved up until say the last season or so (when Jon Bon Jovi made his entrance on the show as an actor). One thing I loved about this show (among the many, Ally was nuts! It was great!) was that the main characters had "theme songs" that were appropriate to their lives which would play in the background for us, the viewing audience, but in their head on the show to lift their spirits or something of that nature. All this being said, if you had to choose a Joni Mitchell song as your theme song (as this is the JMDL), which one would it be and why? - -Monika NP: "Tell It Like It Is"-Aaron Neville P.S. [Some trivia for you!] Ally's boyfriend at one point, Larry (played by Robert Downey Jr.), performs "River" (I think it was) on the piano for Ally. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2007 #200 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
