My favourite story of Joni's was on the Painting With Words and Music DVD when she describes her journey back to Vancouver Island and the old fishing lodge she stayed in. With her smoky voice, she imitates the woman trying to tempt her outside. I laughed so hard at the whole routine but also felt comfort in the story that she told it so intimately. I could visualise it all. Joni's ability to tell a linear story is almost as good as her ability to reveal emotional lessons in poetic form. Her descriptions of pulling the poncho around her shoulders and the sound of the fishing boats outside gave me a feeling of being there. Just like the recognition of emotions experienced from events in my life that match those feelings portrayed in song. I could picture the cool night air and the forest all around with the sound of lapping water from a lake and a chain smoking woman who has experienced a lot in life but with a heart of gold. When some of us attended the hommage to Joni in Toronto back in 2001, Lightfoot made a suprise appearance to speak. He talked about Joni when both of them were getting started. She really seemed to be pleased that he was there and she gave him a big hug. It's just because they're all Canadian. But hey she should cheer up that she's not being grouped with women or folk artists for once! Which reminds me....I stopped into a cd store today (one I had never been to and just saw on the way) and they had "Joni Mitchell" in the "females" category....but then again....they had a "male" category as well. They also had a "vocal groups" category though which was very strange. Anyway, this store didn't have that vast of a collection...they only had one Joni album, C&S! (And very few by other artists I like....) - -Monika ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2007 23:20:35 EDT From: PassScribe@aol.com Subject: Original photos from Joni's visit to Mandolin Brothers in 1976 Hi, gang, As most of you know, I recently made a trip to Staten Island to visit the site of the original Mandolin Brothers' store ("I went to Staten Island, Sharon, to buy myself a mandolin") and the current location of that business. The account of that trip was included in an earlier post to JMDL and I'm currently expanding it for use in my Chronicles. The photos I took that day were also shared a while back and are available on my Kodakshare site, in case you missed them. Stan Jay, the owner of Mandolin Brothers, recently sent me scans of the original photos of Joni's visit (from back in 1976) and has graciously permitted me to share them with you all. There were quite a few scratches, dirt & dust spots from age and being handled for the last 30 years so I removed the imperfections using Photoshop. I've tried to submit them to the photo archive on JMDL but had a problem with that. I will keep trying to resolve that problem with Les, but in the meanwhile, you should be able to access them through my Kodakshare site. You must set up an account & log in but it's FREE. I've tried the following link on another computer to make sure it works so, hopefully, no one will have a problem.
