Here's the Joni lyrics that are saving my life...keeping me going...today...a gorgeous Friday when I could be dancing with my dogs in the back...an expanse of lawn, walking, walking walking...that trip to nowhere that could possibly include a chance meeting with a stranger who wants nothing more than to listen...then holds your confessions and sets you free... "You win the lasting laurels with your laughter It reaches like an arm before you sink To win the solitary truth you're after You dare not ask the priestess how to think How to think, how to think" Then again, I can use "Chelsea Morning" as a mantra, and I'm searching for "crimson crystal beads to beckon" me to a place where it feels safe....to a place where it feels familiar....to a place where once I danced, laughed, created, painted.....I can't find those days..not even in my memory. I live and continue to live within Joni's lyrics from "Conversation". It's all about "comfort and consultation", isn't it? It's not a person...just a very far away time...and accountability that grips your throat until the life within you slowly escapes. Down words...down sentences. I'm sorry. But I'm glad you're there, somewhere to choose or not to choose to read. So many of you are with me in my mind's eye. You'd be surprised. Amen Brother Bob! Couldn't have said it better myself. Yesterday, I was rather bummed out as I found out my car needed some semi major work. It also didn't help that it was rather hot outside, being the hot Atlanta summer that it is. So I got a call around 3:00pm that it was ready, and when I asked how much it would be, she said NOTHING as it was under warranty (the same wheel bearings they had replaced in January failed.) I was quite relieved and glad that there are still dependable, trustworthy people in the world. Tomorrow I'm going to escape this summer heat and drive up into North Georgia where it will be a bit cooler. Cool, cool water... Victor ps. Music > and friends (even those we've never met face-to-face) help to pull us > through. >>> It must have been something in the air last week. On Monday a friend was rear-ended by a woman who was suffering a stroke. He was stopped at a red light and she hit him at about 50 miles an hour, never touched her brakes. He injured his back and neck. Tuesday I got the word that I had sold my house (three months on the market much better than the current average 10-15 mos. in MI) Wednesday one of my very closest friends was killed in a motorcycle accident - he was hit by a garbage truck running a late yellow as he made a right turn on red. His family locked his girlfriend of 7 years out of the house, they had the locks changed the day he died. The day of his funeral a dumpster was delivered to his home and they began pitching his things... they lost a ton of money by doing this; he had every copy of Playboy magazine from 1960-2007 and they just tossed them... threw away a bolt of fabric in his garage - he'd just paid almost $1,000 for it to re-upholster the interior of his 1968 Galaxy. It's appalling, he'd be livid at what's going on. The lesson here is that we don't have as much time as we think we do... make provisions for your loved ones... in writing. Death makes even good people do bad things sometimes. Now I am in the midst of sweating the final closing on the house, moving my son to his father's, having a moving sale, final packing, renting a truck, soliciting helpers and driving to Seattle with my Jeep in tow. So much to do. Music is my salvation and my respite. "It's a very unusual piece of music, in that it's like a silk screen", Joni said. "They start off in unison, and then they more and more individuated, like a silk screen slightly offset. Through it all, Tony [Williams] is just boiling, he's the soloist. It's a very simple form, almost like a folk song. Verwe, verse, verse, not even a chorus or a bridge. Like repetitive modules. The form is unusual to jazzers - I remember someone saying, 'Listen to the from of this, it's so unusual.' And I thought, it's just a simple folk form, but look what's happening. You're not waiting for the guys to take their solos, the melody suffices, and meanwhile the drummer's just going crazy. It evokes this image of a late night in New York City, some guy is coming up from Chinatown and he's drunk and he's kicking over garbage cans and yelling all the way uptown. There's escalating anger in the drums, and it makes it a beautiful piece of music." This quote goes on just a little too long perhaps, but I think it's pretty clear that Joni here becomes enamored of linear repetitive song forms which she developed much later in Hejira. 'Footprints' highly recommended. On one of my explorations I came across a record shop - here are two questions about records... They had a record with one of the songs from Dog Eat Dog, I think it was Good Friends, and it was a 'promotional copy - not for sale'. It was LP-size but apparently only had that one song on it. It cost 30 Kroner, thats #3, I guess $2. Does anyone know anything about this? Is there any particular reason I should buy it? And here is my other Q. They had one Crosby & Stills and a couple of Crosby Stills & Nash. Which CS / CS&N would you people recommend? I hardly know them myself. I cc you Laurent, because you gave me some very specific advice on this which I have forgotten by now! I bought "Jaco Pastorius" - now I just need to find my record-player, hopefully it still plays... Bene Now with my own name on my own front door... In my own town. It's not going to sound any different from the copy you already have, assuming you have DED in some format. If you're a completist and want it as a collectible then there would be that value to it but that's about it. Since you're in Copenhagen you need to track down Henning & Christina and listen to them play Joni songs - they are amazing.
