[Catherine McKay Subject: Last Sopranos (spoiler) sort of a little jc After the building up stress of the last few minutes, then the freak out & shock of the 'ending', I laughed & laughed oh my how hysterical! I thought it was good actually. Lots of conjecture buzzing around of what it really symbolized etc etc. Rosie, I never saw Bruce or Patti in last week's episode, were they in the background somewhere? >First of all, what a rip-off bullshit ending. RR< ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2007 01:15:26 -0700 From: "Thea Chesney" Subject: Rousseau walks on trumpet paths... I must say, I am really enjoying this discussion of Rousseau and Jungle Line, though coming into it a bit late. Jungle Line is one of my favorites, and like Jack, I remember it being the first song on THOSL that I really loved. Then, of course, came the day when I listened and finally 'got' the whole album...I still don't know what changed. There is definitely something about the interaction of the guitar, drums, synth, and Joni's voice on Jungle Line that is both divine and weird in a sort of sinister way. I get what you're saying, Monika, about it being "ugly" in a deliberate way. Maybe creepy is a better word...certainly dark. It's jarring, and so are the lyrics. One of my favorite parts: There's a poppy wreath on a soldier's tomb there's a poppy snake in a dressing room Poppy poison, poppy tourniquet It slithers away on brass like mouthpiece spit I love how Joni lays out all of those images, with that duality and such vivid pictures - Rousseau-like, indeed. Also reminds me of a family friend who used to grow opium poppies in her yard simply for the beauty of the flowers. The authorities weren't too happy, but god! those blossoms were gorgeous! And maybe all the more so because of the darkness/poison behind the flowers. I made my boyfriend listen to Jungle Line on a train home once, and he was blown away, without having any context for the song. Many subsequent hours were spent in my room, listening to the entire album. I'll make a Joni fan out of him yet! It's a powerful song. Peace, Thea, up late in California with golden poppies outside her door, a different sort entirely! But still beautiful. Grabster" Subject: Re: Last Sopranos (spoiler) sort of a little jc As a long time Sopranos fan, I thought the ending made a lot of sense in the context of the show and its rejection of traditional narrative. In the past, the gun they show you in the first act goes off in the second, and by curtain call everything is wrapped up in a tidy package- crime does not pay, good triumphs over evil, and the bad are punished. In the TV world of The Sopranos, as in real life, none of these things are true. The gun they show you may not get fired, things rare not wrapped up in a tidy package... crime pays pretty well, evil sometimes triumphs over good, and in general everyone gets punished, sometimes by their own inner demons. The final sequence was riveting, as creator David Chase built up the suspense to a boiling point. As Tony and family arrived at the diner, you kept waiting for something to happen. As each stranger walked in, you had to wonder if they were hit men. Apparently, one of the customers was someone Tony had ripped off in a previous episode... literally ruining the man's life, taking all his assets and forcing him into bankruptcy, to pay off gambling debts. The choice of music was brilliant- the Journey song associated with the White Sox victory in the World Series- both a suggestion of Tony's banal tastes and the audience's need for a "victory" at the show's finish line. As Meadow tried and failed time after time to parallel park, then ran across the street, we wondered if she would be hit by a car. Or would the diner explode in a fireball just before she entered? The final scene, shown from Tony's point of view, reflects how paranoid he must be, not knowing when or where or how someone might do him in, just as Phil Leotardo was killed earlier in the episode, right after telling his grandkids to "wave bye-bye." And, just as Tony and Bobby had discussed in a previous episode, when it happens you never see it coming. But what happened here was the audience got "whacked," which made everyone wonder whether the cable service had gone out at a critical moment. The audience and the show's creators made The Sopranos into a kind of hyper-reality, where, despite everyone knowing this is fiction, we want so bad to give these characters a real life of their own. For the rest of his life, the real James Gandolfini will be Tony Soprano to most of us. So, what better ending than whacking the audience? In the show's narrative, their lives go on- or don't, as we don't know what happens after things black out. We just don't get to watch any longer. There are lots of loose ends- an 80-90% chance Tony gets indicted for dumping toxic waste, Junior's stash still not found, etc. etc., but in real life there are always the loose ends. What other ending would have made sense? Other endings would have been derided as cliches- Tony getting killed in a bloodbath of violence. So they had the bloodbath the previous week, complete with a Scorsese-like homage in the hobby shop. The other plausible ending- Tony in witness protection- would have been criticized as a ripoff of Goodfellas, if they had ended the show with Tony picking up his newspaper and the audience seeing he's now living in some strange city. Chase and Co. are being criticized for leaving things open to a possible future movie. Maybe there will be such a movie, maybe not. The audience wants more Sopranos, but putting a film together would be a difficult undertaking. I wouldn't guarantee it will happen. It will take some time before it could happen, as the various principals are going to veer off in many different directions in an attempt to avoid being typecast in their Sopranos roles. Right now, all the pressure is going to keep them apart for the foreseeable future. I repeat, what ending did people want to see, and why would it be better than the one we do have? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2007 08:11:56 -0700 From: Dave Blackburn Subject: Jonatha Brooke etc Greetings all, Just went to hear Jonatha Brooke last night with her wonderful band and she was as fabulous as ever. The turnout was pitiful even for a Monday night but Jonatha got into it, like doing a house concert and was very chatty. She really is of the most interesting and sophisticated of the Joni Mitchell offshoots and her alternate guitar tunings make Joni's seem simplistic. She does songs in alt tunings with DOUBLE capos and is able to find chords that no guitarist has ever used....very sweet. And her voice was nuance perfect the whole night. P.S the thread about The Jungle Line prompts me to reiterate something I discovered when remastering HOSL: I had always assumed Joni had hired the Burundi drummers and recorded them but I could hear the vinyl surface noise crackling throughout the song, at low level to be sure but brought out by the mastering tools, which revealed that she had used an LP of the drummers, maybe from the Library of Congress archives, and made up a song over it.
