Been listening to alot of Richard Shindell - that man knows his way around the 6 strings too, and has a beautiful, if understated, style - but there's stuff going on there that makes people (not just me) wonder "is that one guitar, or 2"? And I love to have my brain tickled like that. Some of these folks play what I'd call "rough at the edges" guitar...but I love it. Hot Tuna w/ full band will be in town soon with JOHN HAMMOND (no slouch either) and I would love to go to that show. Em ps: who's you all's fave bassists? speaking of Hot Tuna, I adore Jack Cassidy also, Graham Maby (used to play with Joe Jackson on his first few albums in the rockin days and now tours with Joan Baez) and again from Red Hot Chili Peps, whatever that sick bastard's name is I lurv what he does to that bass guitar, he SHREDS. I did check out most of his first album that he did (I think) on Columbia. Yeah, fascinating stuff to dip one's self in from time to time...athletic, like Flea. I need to listen to some Weather Report. Life is for learning. I tend to not like the Joni stuff he is on. I'm alive. The past several months I was lost somewhere in time, somewhere in quicksand where the earth was pulling me down, somewhere that kept me from the solace Joni generously shares....and, when I read a few Digests, I wasn't able to click on joni@smoe.org....and I realized that I hardly knew anyone but I'm thrilled to know we have so many new family members. Ah.....I had the number 1 song on the day I was born but jotted it down and have characteristically lost the piece of paper...or notebook...who knows where the time goes...who knows where my things are? Sometimes it actually hurts to hear Joni. I feel a sharp bang of heart pain as I hear her pure tones, magnificent words that form lyrics that once seemed to be my only saving grace. I've been reading Joni's "Joni Mitchell: The Complete Poems and Lyrics", listening to my mind's ear full of tones and that incredible vocal instrument Joni shares so seemingly effortlessly. My grandmother died on Christmas morning. She was 104 and 4 months old. The last thing she said to me was, "I've always loved you, love you now and will love you always". That was the day I began to choose Joni-lyrics that described my feelings. I haven't been able to stop searching the poetic lines of Joni's lyrics. In silence she urged me back to living. I've always felt, and continue to feel that Joni saves my life. I have a friend who took two of Joni's little paintings that came with one of her Cd's and he was able to enlarge them so that I am seeing such incredible details. The framing of two enlargements of Joni's paintings are a joy-print on my wall. Do I have your name correct?....Bendicte????....many congratulations for the awesome amount of work to complete your dissertation!!!! Can you share the title with me? I want to say hello to everyone and tell all of you that I've missed you...the Digest family...sharing thoughts and posting mine. And with this posting I send to you my warm and sincere greetings...tell you how much I've missed all of my Digest pals and welcome to all of our new members. Mark, where can I find a copy of "The World of Joni Mitchell"? And a hearty welcome to you, Mark! I've planted a garden that I can see right outside the window next to my computer. Greens and yellows with purple and white blooms that are now gently calling for their morning watering with flower-notes of music. Love from Bo - --------------------------------- Bored stiff? I suppose the answer depends on how you define "later career" and "early career", can be a little subjective for someone whose career has spanned 40+ years. Anyway, on her 1998 tour, she played BYT from 1970 at every stop, and when I saw her in Atlanta she performed BSN - the only time she performed it on that tour. I must say, there are Joni words for every occasion and sometimes they just drift into my mind unbidden. Right now it's "each so deep and superficial between the forceps and the stone." I was hooked by the opening track Morning Morgantown it summed up the way many people (hippies esp) were feeling at that time. A sense of innocence and hope, a belief that we could create a better world where we could live together in peace and harmony. This was reinforced by the sentiments expressed in For Free, Big Yellow Taxi and Woodstock. A great album LOTC and very much of it's time yet still relevant today. I was a Joni fan for life after hearing this record and i went out and bought STAS and Clouds as soon as i could get my hands on them. Well, now is the time for the > guitarists to get some spotlight! The ax is not all for show. So who are > your > favorite guitarists? Feel free to explain if you'd like! > Hi, Monika, Of course, Joni is one of my favorites on acoustic, but more for the "feeling" produced with it in connection with her songwriting and vocal style... it's a matter of blending it all together, like she did so well, especially on the early albums. And, I have the utmost respect for many well-known guitarists like Clapton and Hendrix, as well as lesser-known talents like Adrien Belew and Steve Hillage. But my "most favorite" guitarists (naturally) follow along the lines of my favorite artists (in general) over the years: Stephen Stills (acoustic and electric, with Manassas in particular); Bonnie Raitt (Man! This girl can play slide with the best of them... and with feeling); Todd Rundgren (vastly under-rated guitarist IMHO); and, good ol' Joe Walsh, who I'm going to see live (again) on August 9th. And, though I love most of what he did with James Gang, as well as solo, I think required JW listening for guitar lovers would be 1985's "The Confessor"; a very special song blending unique songwriting, arrangement, style and musical ability.
