I'm a big Futurama fan having discovered via The Simpsons. It is set in the future (3000) and one of the quirks of the show is that famous people of today are preserved in jars. Well, just their heads actually. It's silly humour but I like it. It's also a way of getting guest stars to appear on the show. They couldn't play themselves on the show because it is set in the year 3000. People like Lucy Leiu, Pamela Anderson and Beck have all played themselves as preserved heads in jars. I know the episode you mentioned (I have them all on DVD). It is a "road" episode. They uncover an old VW van and try to relive the 70s. They go on the road with Beck('s head) and visit all the 70's-esque music festivals. I never noticed Joni's head in the bud though. I will have to watch that episode again and freeze on Joni. Thanks for "heads up". What did you think about it? What impression did you get? - - -Monika December 1971 - Blue was given to me as a Christmas gift from my brother (he later told me it was that or Melanie). I listened to it at my small apartment on my $33 stereo and was taken from the first note. I went out shortly after that and got Clouds and Ladies of the Canyon. Song to a Seagull came later - but before For the Roses which was also a Christmas gift (from my girlfriend of the time). I got every other Joni as they came out. I remember the maiden voyages of Hiejra, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter (wasn't happy with it when it first came out - now one of my favorites) ... but not others. (Could have been those cloudy times!) I do remember it was always an occasion (much to the chagrin of a couple of roomies) - a bottle of wine and a night's claim to the turntable. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2007 08:08:11 EDT From: PassScribe@aol.com Subject: Re: First Joni Album > From: Motitan@aol.com > Subject: Your first Joni album? > > So what was the first Joni album you got? My wife & I were visiting my cousin and his wife (around 1974), sitting around and talking over drinks when he put the album on. He said, "my brother-in-law turned us on to this album recently; it's his favorite and we love it." As I sat there listening to the album, I was so blown away that I borrowed the album, went home and made a cassette tape of it and listened to that for a while before finally buying my own copy (along with everything else she had done up to that point) and then the rest, as they came out. It's still my favorite. Bought it used in Germany in the late 70's. Prior to that I'd listened mostly to my friends' copy of MOA. STAS blew me away. Shut me right up and drew me in. Fascinated me all day and all night for several months. I can't ask for a whole lot more. That was some years before I heard that Joni, too, was a Saskatchewan girl. At age 15 I scraped together enough money to buy Court and Spark. On first listen, I felt I had wasted my money. Didn't like it at all. Two more listens, and I was hooked for life... on Joni's music. Kate of the North - -- http://xoetc.antville.org Who Does She Think She Is? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Jun 2007 11:30:28 -0600 From: Robert Procyk Subject: your first Joni album I think I've told this one before but my first Joan was Blue, in Dec. 1987. Up until that point, I only knew the handful of singles, and "Good Friends", which for some reason got a bit of airplay here. Anyway, the only reason I gave her a chance was because I remember Creem magazine gave DED an A+, and then Rolling Stone listed Blue in the best 100 albums or whatever that issue was. Since I thought RS was THE authoritative source for what was good (how stupid I was), I signed Blue out from the library just to say I heard it. I wasn't prepared for how it hit me, the second I put it on. I am still taken back to the first time I heard the opening lines of "All I Want" - I hit me in the gut. I immediately thought "me too! me too!" (teenage dramatic angst that makes me roll my eyes now when I think of it). Anyway, I remember I picked up the phone, called me good friend Michelle, who was a musician and who was the only person I thought woul d get this, and told her "oh man, there's this album and it's so good and blah blah blah" and she said "oh... that's... good.... I'm watching the Cosby SHow right now, can I call you back?" Just to let you know, she still doesn't get it. I then somehow cornered my mother and got her to listen to Carey for some reason (I dunno why), and she was all "that's nice" and probably wondered what I had been up to on the way home from the library. I ran out the next day and bought my own copy of Blue. I'll never forget that snowy Thursday night in December. Blue probably isn't my favorite anymore (I rotate between 6 of her albums as my favorties), but it packed the most punch for me. And I had to laugh when I read that "One More Night" was the #1 song when someone was born - that's a song I would normally roll my eyes at, and I know I was so disappointed with that album at the time because Face Value was a personal favorite of mine when I was young, and No Jacket Required was sort of cheesy, so I've always dismissed it since then. BUT, as soon as I saw mention of that song, I was 15 again, sitting in my bedroom listening to that album, and it brought back so many memories... which makes me understand that I don't know if I like something because it's good or because of nostalgia.... "I know just a few people on this list mentioned what album they first got by Joni and the memories associated with that. - -Monika" First, I apologize for the extra email I just sent while trying to write this one. My cat stepped on my computer and sent it off to y'all. Back to the subject of my first Joni album and the memories it invokes....Here goes, and as always, more than you ever would want to know. I was in the second half of my freshman year in 1972. I finally found "my people" out in the field behind the buildings where we would go to smoke cigarettes and ???, and many of us brought our guitars to school every day. (At the time, I looked like Patti Hearst. As I was walking to school with my guitar, I received many lovely comments from people driving by, such as "Hey Patti, is that a machine gun in your guitar case?"). I digress. I was learning to play tunes by Yes, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young and CSNY, when Lori, (who was having sex with my boyfriend because I wouldnt "put out"), sang Little Green. Something about that song got to me, and she told me it was Joni Mitchell from "Blue." Well, the next thing I know, I find myself at a garage sale, and there it is--"Blue" for one dollar. I thought I would take a gamble and buy it. Once I got it home, I drove my family crazy by playing it over and over in my room and attempting to teach myself all of the songs in her tunings. After that, I was pretty much a convert. I think I held my breath until C&S came out, and then went back to buy all of the pre-Blue stuff. When I graduated from HS, I moved to a place called "The Castle" in Modjeska Canyon, Ca. Rumor has it that Timothy Leary lived there at some point, but at that time it's seven rooms were occupied by musicians. I remember boring them all to death playing Hejira and Don Juan when they came out. Me: "Man, listen to this!" for the hundredth time. BTY, I dumped the guy that was sleeping with Lori, the woman who played "Little Green," and we ended up opening for Dave Mason in the early '80s. Good choice on my part. So there you have it. Jill (still trying to upload my Jonifest photos and having some sort of technical problem. My account seems to have dissapeared. Is there anyone out there who can help?) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2007 21:39:35 EDT From: ROSCOE1TC@aol.com Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2007 #168 my first joni album was a christmas present, given to me at christmas time (duh) of 71. a friend and i had been christmas shopping, earlier in the season, in some sheet music/piano store, and i picked up this blue songbook, called blue. i was instantly intrigued...having read some of the lyrics, etc. a few weeks later, the friend gave me the songbook and the album. one never knows what effect a christmas gift might have on someone. i know it sounds dramatic, but that gift utterly and positively changed my life from that moment forward. so, blue was my first joni mitchell record. as soon as the stores reopened following the holiday, i went and bought the three that came before it. i forced myself to play them, always, in the order in which they were released. from then on, i bought each successive one on the day of release. there's a picture of me sitting in front of my console stereo. there's not an ounce of color in my face, my eyes are rolled up in my head, and my hands are a blur. i know exactly when that picture was taken: the following christmas, as i was playing for the roses for the first time. i was shocked. i was stupefied. i was enlightened. i can't say i remember what song was playing when the shutter snapped, but i would be willing to bet it was "cold blue steel and sweet fire." she has provided the soundtrack to my life since i was 17... and what a soundtrack it has been.... terry ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2007 #169 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
