I was wondering if anyone else has tried and had a problem? I think the other link I provided may have been flawed. There were also lots of additional characters in the text that weren't there when I sent the post. Additionally, there are a couple of high-profile covers coming up that I though I'd let y'all know about: Paul Anka will be throwing another BSN on the pile on his upcoming album; Chaka Khan - Chaka Khan will feature a funked-up version of Ladies' Man on her 2007 release (definitely one to look forward to); John Doe (from X and The Knitters and also a solo artist) has released a cover of A Case Of You. Continues to be a busy year for those of us keeping up with Joni covers. (LOL.....so what else is new?) * One with a person chained to an Ethiopian wall with a serpent, eating a working girl like her alive * One with hexagrams of the heavens * One about Indian land again * One with a mermaid (tavern!) (Is that a mermaid with all the hair? Maybe not...) And the very last one....I could be totally lost in the Joniozone again, but I swear it looks like Joni sticking her tongue out at the music business! If only the car were a '57 Biscayne.... And then talk about shadows and light: "The biggest hindrance to getting great-looking sculpture photos is the bright sunshine which creates big, black shadows. Cloudy days are perfect for getting 'shadowless' photos (this is the secret of the professional photographers, by the way)." Clouds don't get in your way of taking good photos, I guess. Just throwing the lightness on these things, Patti P. _________________________________________________________________ Play games, earn tickets, get cool prizes. And the seasons, they go round and round - and so do Joni cover frisbees, whether you're spinning them in your CD player or flinging them willy-nilly out the window. Hopefully you won't want to do that with Volume 89, though - there's a lot to like here for the Joni fan, lots of oldies, and most of these are hard-to-find. Thanks to my friend Paul for his help with this one. You can go download it here: http://download.yousendit.com/E660EAC0022F76AE And should you do that, you'll find the following nuggets: 1. Sally Horner - The Dawntreader: We ease into #89 with one of my favorite Joni songs. Sally is a UK folksinger, this 1999 track is one of the few fairly recent recordings you'll hear on this volume. An acapella version, Sally is accompanied only by seagulls and rolling waves, a very nice effect. 2. Sing-In Boulder - Both Sides Now: These hip kids from Boulder are at it again. They did 3 Joni covers on as many albums, all released in the late 60's/early 70's. They sound just fine, why they start with "Furls & Curls" of angel hair is anyone's guess, however. 3. Will Carroll - Court and Spark: I love the musical intro, but the vocal is a bit tough to take. And he does a gender switch, which forces him into singing "madwoman's soul" and such. Just sing it the way it's written and don't worry about it, dude. 4. Holly Brook - All I Want: One of my personal favorites on this disc. She plays a mean dulcimer, and she's got a great voice. This track was released in conjunction with her 2006 CD as a download-only but in order to get it I had to download some Sony music program which took half a day. But anyway, I digress - I'm glad I went to all the trouble to get this gem and I'm delighted to share it with all of you now. 5. Penny Wager - Marcie: A VERY rare and hard-to-find track from an obscure British folk LP from 1972. A bit more static on the track than I'd like, but Penny does a fine job, pretty much patterning her version right in Joni's steps. 6. Max Bygraves - Both Sides Now: Max has been a mainstay in the British music scene for a long, long time. This one is easy/cheesy-listening. 7. Miek & Roel - De Cirkel: This Dutch duo does a fine Dutch-language version of "The Circle Game" (1972) here. They also recorded BSN but I haven't been able to find that one yet. 8. Alison Sharino - Big Yellow Taxi: A very pleasant voice and a straightforward cover of Joni's recording here. 9. Inasense - Woodstock: A nice psychedelic workout, with the CSNY recording as the template - though they do throw in an extended funky stretch in the 7-minute track. A bit o' trivia - most of this band was also in Soulfarm, who also recorded a cover of Woodstock. 10. Appleton MacDowell Male Chorus - Both Sides Now: Lots of guys. They have that Mitch Miller thing going on - they harmonize a bit but not as much as they could. 11. The Sands of Time - Chelsea Morning: 70's folk, 1 guitar and several ladies with some pleasant harmonies. 12. Black Olive Jazz - Twisted: A bit of an update on the Ross-Gray classic, adding Tupac and Dr. Dre and low-emission buses into the mix. Kay Andreas is the vocalist for this San Francisco combo, who ably back her up on the song. 13. Tokyo's Coolest Combo - The Circle Game: Hey Daddy-O - these cats really do sound pretty cool - this is an instrumental, highlighted mostly by the vibes. Sorta cheesy, but in a real good way. I dig it anyway. 14. Ferrante & Teicher - Both Sides Now: Most of you will remember this duo, both of them playing grand pianos together. This track is very rare, it was released only on a 70's Japanese album - lucky for us their manager got in touch with me and sent this copy. 15. Los Killers - Woodstock: Not to be confused with THE Killers, these guys are a 70's band from Uruguay. This wah-wah psychout was included as a bonus track on the cd reissue of their 1972 LP. 16. Craig Cardiff - River: Probably my favorite track on the volume; Craig has a Nick Drake/Peter Gabriel vocal quality that works perfectly for this song. He accompanies himself on guitar and does a good job of that as well. 17. Mark Erelli - Carey: Mark's a big Joni fan, and his version of Carey will take you by surprise - it's got a real country/western swing sound to it. I love the groove of it, and as always the harmonica is a welcome touch. 18. Jordan Family - Both Sides Now: An unreleased recording, this stellar performance comes from an NPR performance of about a year ago and features Stephanie Jordan on vocals, Marlon Jordan on trumpet, and Kent Jordan on flute. A really pretty arrangement and fine performances all 'round. 19. Ricky Ross - The Circle Game: This is an unreleased live recording, pretty nice. Sounds an awful lot like Paul Westerberg from The Replacements until he speaks and reveals his Scottish accent. 20. Brian Kerins - (You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care: Elvis impersonator - and a pretty mediocre one at that. And since that's about 76 minutes worth, I'll stop for now. Hope you enjoy these, should you decide to do so. And next month we'll start into the 90's and begin the countdown to Volume 100! For me, you summed it up well, Laurent. Besides, pre-disco or those disco times were tough on certain creative souls. I mean, where did Joni fit in? She did find a way somehow to get in there and make a big dent and C&S is her best known work. Imagine if Joni were a different type of woman, hell-bent on fortune and fame and selling herself out to the poker chip disc money-making machine. She has everything to have been more out there than Madonna or whomever. But Joni's about truth and brutal beauty with that certain courage like that of the old Indian Chiefs who never gave in to that which was not of themselves, their people, their beloved earth and all of creation.
