Sometimes speaking of something as greater is an attempt to overcome that it is actually thought of as lesser. The role of the female bearing the offspring might be more fuel to the fire man. In my opinion, it is just linguistics which don't mean much without interpretation which comes out of one's culturization. The meanings of our words change. Perhaps what bothered Joni is that when gender is attached to artist, male or female, it might be limiting rather than diminishing... one side rather than both.
