(NOT, according to Brookes, where Joni bought the mandocello) with Stan Jay's apartment. Stan was just a private collector and broker working out of his home. It's possible to imagine that Joni went to Staten Island headed for Mandolin Bros, which was and is one of the best string shops in the East, but ended up in Stan Jay's living room, through some series of auspicious events. (Or not. Stan Jay was likely well known among the NYC folkies...) By the way, this book is a great read if you have any sort of regard for the guitar. By today's standards, Joni probably wouldn't have made the final cut on "American Idol." She wouldn't have gotten nearly as many endorsements as Beyonce (not that she would have wanted them). And she wouldn't have made a sexy music video like Shakira or posed topless for Blender like Avril Lavigne. According to this AP story, having "it" all for women in music means talent and looks. From the article: Today, it's hard to find a singer larger than a size 6 and without a sexy look -- all of which are played up with sensuous videos, modeling spreads and magazine covers. Lavigne, who once scoffed at singers who stripped for the cameras, fronts the new issue of Blender topless save for a strategically placed banner that reads "Hell Yeah, I'm, Hot!'" The hit reality show Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll is a striking example. In finding a replacement for current lead doll, stunner Nicole Scherzinger, the judging panel -- which included the cosmetically enhanced rapper Lil' Kim -- did talk about vocal qualities. But while a few contestants had strong voices, all were taut, toned and sexy, and the focus was more on their dancing and overall desirability. Even singers who are heralded for talent are gorgeous, like Alicia Keys, Corinne Bailey Rae or Norah Jones. The article goes on to ask: Where are the Patsy Clines of today? More often than not on smaller, underground labels, which put more of a premium on talent. Gerson said small labels may be the best path to success for a woman who doesn't look like a Barbie doll. Even American Idol Kelly Clarkson has been getting lots of blowback for putting on weight and was given a hard time by her label about her new album, which they said was too dark. Amy Winehouse seems to be an exception (I think she's georgeous but in a very non-conventional way). I also wonder if this issue has affected Pink's success...This story just bummed me out. Maybe you need to hear another version. For the past couple of months I've been listening to the 1979 Forest Hills concert that Randy remastered and now I can hear the words on all the songs, especially this one. "Along comes a lady in lacy sleeves" was always to me "along comes a lady in hey see seas." (I figured it was a Canadian thing.) I'm now hearing it as a short story put to a lively tune, with a little honky-tonk piano thrown in. It sounds great on this recording! (Thanks Randy!!!) Who is this raised on robbery woman? I don't remember any discussion about her. I used to think she was a prostitute but she doesn't seem very businesslike. Now I'm thinking she's a traveler, a con artist, like the people in the new tv show. I wonder how she relates to Joni. Any ideas anyone? > Orchestral version of BSN (except when accompanying > Emma Thompson's acting) > Orchestral version of Case of You > Tax Free > Lakota > Facelift > Ladies' Man > Man to Man > Dancin' Clown > Not to Blame > Taming the Tiger I don't have strong feelings about any of these songs. But I do like the phrase "happiness is the best facelift." How true. And I like the song too. The only Joni song I consider a dud is "Underneath the Streetlight." She must have been crazed by love or something else when she came up with that one. It's the only Joni song I can think of where she boringly repeats the same phrase. Okay, so it's a nice phrase - -- "yes I do I love you" -- but over and over and over? Enough already. And why is she yelling it underneath a streetlight anyway? The only song I never want to hear, but am not sure it's a dud, is "Talk to Me." That's like nails on a chalkboard. Ouch. So my tally is a few blahs, one dud, and one "that's awful." Everything else is still impressive. Not bad for a decades-long career. Debra Shea ____________________________________________________________________________________You snooze, you lose. (No offense to Kelly Clarkson who I don't mind [don't like her music but have no problem with]. I don't watch the show myself but my brother does and so I hear clips here and there and Lord have mercy on my ears sometimes! B) Because she is not a minion like the rest of them? No way in hell anyone would tell Joni what to sing and she'd do it. C) As mentioned, she's a songwriter. She's not about the flash. And the Beyonces and the Avril's and all of them will come and go. They may dazzle the 12 year olds of today but those 12 year olds will grow up and move on. In fact, I'm embarrassed to be around the same age, if not the same age, as Avril Lavigne. Their names, let alone their music, will not be remembered. I don't know. Sometimes I get these weird images in my head when listening to albums depending on the tone of them. It just has this certain feel about it. Music is obviously not just a bunch of notes. I don't like hearing Joni or any woman begging for attention as she does in that song. But other people don't hear it that way. Yep, to each her own.
