I don't know if it's difficult to arrange though... I'm glad you like Annie Lennox' Ladies of the Canyon! Its one of the songs on the tribute album that kind of wakes me up every time. I love Annie Lennox' singing, but I have to say I always found her music bland. Greetings from sunny Cambridge Benedicte Date: Tue, 22 May 2007 00:50:47 +1000 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: LOTC A lot of people have mentioned that Ladies of The Canyon is their least favourite of Joni's albums lately. It has always been my least favourite of Joni's early albums too. Not that I dislike it. The songs just never grabbed me like those on Blue or Clouds. I have gained a new appreciation for it though through the covers. I have been compiling all my favourite covers from each album and making up my own tribute albums for each of Joni's albums. Only two are complete and burned onto disc; Court and Spark and Hejira. LOTC is almost complete (just The Arrangement is missing) Thanks mainly to Bob, I have learned to love these songs more. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 May 2007 21:18:56 +1000 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Re: Favourite covers Hi Bene. Do you mean on the web site or here on the list? If it's here on the list, it's not so difficult. We could just vote on Bob's collection that he sends us or we could widen it to all covers. I could easily give you my top 10 or 20 covers. There are some that, dare I say, have actually eclipsed Joni's originals. Mark in chilly Sydney where the first snow of the season has fallen. I'm the first to admit that Stevens' FMIP is a radical reworking of Joni's song - so what? I still maintain that CSNY did the same with Woodstock - play their version against Joni's LOTC version. Miles away from each other - - and those are the best covers, when an artist reimagines a composition in their own style as opposed to pure karaoke. I like the Prince cover, but I wish he would have included the first verse instead of omitting it. By age 21 Joni had borne a child and given her up for adoption. I'd say she knew quite a bit about love, as letting your child go for her own good, when it breaks your heart, is one of the most loving and yet difficult and painful things a woman can do. It takes a big love, one that is more for someone else than for oneself. Age has no monopoly on love or the understanding of it. I know plenty of "mature" people who don't know love at all, certainly don't have a clue how to behave in a loving way. Joni has told a few stories about the place - notably it is where she stayed while her little cottage was being built. One night she was there in bed topless and knitting some perky retirees holding glasses of bourbon walked into her room looking for conversation ;-) Well it has been transformed into a gorgeous spa-like resort called Rockwater Secret Cove Resort. I visited when it was the old Lord Jim's back in 2001 and the setting is absolutely stunning. They even had a big old pool table prominently placed in the bar. I'm sure Joni has hit a few there. The new place is very affordable. Maybe we should have some kind of fest event there. He immediately said "here, have it, I don't know how I ever got it, it probably is my sister's and got in here by mistake." Still I feel bad since I have most everything else in all formats 3 times over. Anyone know if there is a Gold CD version of it? It is a fine album for all the reasons already stated. Also, there is something very 1960s Santa Monica mountain canyonesque about it. Seriously, there is a vibe in the music throughout that just screams, "yeah, Lauren Canyon!" Speaking of that canyon I just loved hearing the audio clip of Cass sing I Had a King. Oh my - she just nailed it. She really got it. Kakki P.S. I was so happy to hear Joni went to see Tom Rush at McCabe's! (Even though I went to his last couple shows there with no Joni). I just think it's great she got out to the tiny little place and lent it her prescence. He is such a gorgeous nice man. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 May 2007 18:41:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Em Subject: LOTC Given the different atmospheres presented in Joni's many albums. the many landscapes and scenarios, the "world" painted in LOTC is definately where I would like to to be dropped off and left, if I had to pick one. Tastes good, feels good, smells good. Oh and it sounds good. I think it is my fave Joni album, really. Feels good being there. I saw him at a very small venue, a gallery with 40 chairs, just a few weeks ago here in St. Petersburg. Would have been a thrill to see Joni there, too! He was wonderful. Oh, how I love this song. The rhythm is mesmerizing as is the Native American chanting. This song transports me right back to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Oh, alright, you're entitled. :) Also, I love Tax Free. My favorite song on DED. Joni rocks with great attitude here. If I had to compile a top ten dud list, it would look like this: 1. Snakes and Ladders 2. Nothing Can Be Done 3. Not to Blame 4. Dancing Clown 5. Good Friends 6. The Reoccurring Dream 7. Lead Balloon 8. Chinese Cafe (I know, I know, but for some reason, this song depresses the hell out of me). 9. Cherokee Louise - orchestral version only 10. Last Time I Saw Richard - MOA version only Mia Richard wrote: <> _________________________________________________________________ Catch suspicious messages before you open themwith Windows Live Hotmail. http://imagine-windowslive.com/hotmail/?locale=en-us&ocid=TXT_TAGHM_migration_HM_mini_protection_0507 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 May 2007 15:17:48 +1000 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Re: LOTC Our own Danilo got in before Bjork on Boho but of course, that wasn't an official release. You have to take a plane to a taxi or rental car to a ferry to get there and then you may miss the turn-off a few times but the beautiful journey is all part of the power and the glory! Did you see where they describe the 1500 ft. high "boardwalk" "nestled in the Arbutus trees?" Oh my heart!! I also noticed it is located on Ole's Cove Road. Isn't Ole the name of Joni's long-time caretaker? Oh sighhh ;-) I wish we could all escape there sometime. I cannot believe there is still no Gold CD of FTR, Jerry! Where do we write and call to make it happen?!
