Hi Monika. I highly recommend PWWAM. It's quite unique in that it is a concert and art exhibition in one. The audience were invited guests and there are a lot of famous faces in the audience. Some of the highlights for me were, Graham Nash presenting Joni with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame award that she snubbed earlier and her priceless comment to Graham as it's revealed from a garbage bag. Joni's impromptu dancing is wonderful and he stories are priceless. I adore her story of staying in a fishing lodge in Canada and the strange, full-of-life woman who ran it. Her performance of Woodstock is also memorable. I totally agree with Mark on this one. I have watched PWWAM several times - -bought it a couple of months ago together with WOHM - and I can't get enough! WOHM is interesting but I prefer PWWAM. As for the top five list, here's my contribution (though I find it really tough to choose just five): 1. Blue 2. Songs to a seagull 3. Hejira 4. The Hissing of Summer Lawns 5. Court and Spark This list could change since I have some catching up to do. I haven't heard some of the later albums since I lost sight of Joni after Wild Things run fast - (I went through a period where my life did not contain music, isn't that awful?) I do own Both Sides now, though and love the title song - she does it better than the 1969 version, in my opinion - and some of the other songs but I am not so impressed with A case of you, I think she spoilt that one, she should have left it alone and let us enjoy the original version on Blue. Again, in my opinion. Sufjan Stevens, Bjork, Elvis Costello, Brad Mehldau, Cassandra Wilson all put a brand new spin on their tracks as do most of the artists involved. There are lots of Joni songs I love, mostly from the earlier albums, but there are so many albums involved. I usually don't include "live" and "best ofs" since they're usually "loaded" with favorite songs and in a different class from studio albums/collections of compositions. I could go with the five albums I've listened to the most as the best measure, but tastes and preferences change with time so I'll go with my current five: 1. Court & Spark 2. I have to include the MoA version of The Dry Cleaner from des Moines as well. As far as other musical intros I love the intros for Woodstock and Carey on MoA. The lush piano intros on For the Roses are really beautiful, especially Rainy Night House, Judgment of the Moon and Stars and as Bob mentioned The Last Time I Saw Richard. The spare guitar intros on Song to a Seagull appeal to my sense of "rightness" I don't know how else to explain it. Night in the City, Nathan La Franeer and The Dawntreader among my favorites. For completely different reasons I like the intro to The Wolf that Lives in Lindsey. It's not as musical as some but it's "wildness" sets the tone perfectly for me, Similarly, Goodbye Porkpie Hat on Mingus, with it's brushes on drums and that soulful guitar and clarinet in counterpoint with one another just moves me into a melancholy direction. On to some less popular works, I really enjoy the intro to Number One from CMIARS it makes me want to close my eyes and move my shoulders and head as I feel the rhythm take me away. Manu Katche does such a good job on drums on this recording and it's only enhanced by the electonica which, unlike many of Joni's fans, I embraced during this time. The Beat of Black Wings intro is a little less impressive, for me, but rhythm always catches me and draws me in. Some others in no particular order: Slouching Toward Bethlehem, Nothing Can be Done, Two Grey Rooms, Turbulent Indigo and Harlem in Havana (which at just over a minute and a half is one of her longer intros). If you made it this far... thanks for your patience, sometimes topics just carry me away. Is that a good Joni buy?" I noticed on the favorite live albums question, quite a few of you picked "Shadows and Light" over "Miles Of Aisles." Would you say that is the superior one? Why? Now you see, I haven't heard "Shadows and Light" nor have I seen the DVD concert of it (I saw that at Border's last night too.....), so that's why I ask. Is that DVD a good Joni buy?" highlights?" Monika - here's my take on this. MOA was her first concert CD, with Tom Scott & LA Express, circa 1974, and features songs primarily from her first 5 albums (through For The Roses). To that, she added a couple from Court & Spark (People's Parties) as well as one that was never to appear on a studio album (For Love or Money) and Jericho (later to appear on Don Juan's Reckless Daughter). It is a great record from that period, especially in that it reveals her somewhat tentative decision to shift from a solo performer (about 1/2 of the tracks are essentially that way) to one willing to broaden the colors of her music via a band. She was perhaps 30 years old when this was made. S&L catches her 6 years later, at the absolute peak of her career. She has a fantastic, unconscious band behind her (if you doubt that, Google Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius and Michael Brecker, and you will see what I mean), and the songs are pretty much all from Court and Spark and Later. So, it's nearly a completely different set. The DVD covers a slightly different song set than the CD, but there is much more overlap than difference. The DVD really does it for me. However, if you are not familiar with the albums after Court and Spark (The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, and Mingus - there is nothing as I recall from Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, regretably,) I would suggest that you get comfortable with them first - especially HOSL and Hejira - before getting that DVD). It is perhaps my most prized possession of Joni's material. PWWAM is an intimate affair recorded when she was roughly 55 years old or so, I think. It was performed in a small theatre in the round in LA, with a fine house band including Larry Klein, the great Brain Blade on drums, Greg Leitz (sp?) on guitar and pedal steel and Mark Isham (a fantastic musician and a composer) on trumpet. Does one need to be a bit older to appreciate this offering ? Perhaps. I enjoyed it very much, from the perspective of one closer to Joni's age (OK, a few years younger, but apparently that's my style) but would be interested in the thoughts of the younger set. It covers material mostly from Hissing of Summer Lawns on - including a few covers of others songs - Comes Love, Why Do Fools Fall in Love (also on S&L) and Trouble Man (Marvin Gaye). It is the work of a mature woman, in contrast to the others. Good luck. Bobsart ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. There is something very fecund yet virile about Jaco's basslines that always kill me every time I listen to it. Same thing with teh grandiose opening of Banquet and that almost Thor-like hammering of the piano as a percussive instrument. Unrelated: I was part of the team that played against the DJs of the rival station recently and we were all asked to choose our 8-second music clip that will be played when we bat. I thought it had to be grandiose so I chose Wagner's Schmerzen but I realized that when it is played outdoors, it needed much stronger voicings. In retrospect I should have used the intro of Ray's Dad's Cadillac because I like the mesh of the voices of Joni and Brenda Russell on that one and that subtle yet rhythmic melody. Piano songs: For Free - LOTC - Simple yet complex. Court And Spark - CAS - ditto Many people talk about Joni's weird guitar tunings, well she has one of the most unusual key touch strokes on a piano also. Almost like she's strumming a guitar on the piano. I've doodled with many Joni songs when I'm in the studio and between "moments" of productivity. I've never quite figured out yet exactly how she "Elvis'ed" (reverbed) her piano tracks. Guitar songs: People's Parties - CAS - Both rhythmic and melodic. Amelia - HEJ - Always came across very surreal and mystic to me. Conversation - LOTC - So smooth and rhythmic at the same time. Woman Of Heart And Mind - FTR - Don't know why but it's always struck a chord with me. A Case Of You - BLUE - Any guitar/dulcimer song from Blue, she had such a "string bling" going on that album.
