Even though I haven't written anything for ages I've been following your reports on both fest-issues and more life in general stuff. And I've been thinking about you! You know - I believe you all offer some profound impact on my life, even though I haven't been able to communicate it for some time. One current example: I'm listening to the great Cyndi Lauper Why? Well, there are two mainreasons: I heard and saw her faboulous performance of Carey distributed through this warm arrangement. Then someone else mentioned Cyndi doing a "True colors" tour. And there she was, right in front of me, at my great music library in Oslo - Deichmann - and what else could I do, of course I picked her music up. And she is just great. Her energy from 1983, well appeals to me... The eighities wasn't all cold and cool. Also what I relly love with this list - even in my delurking phases - is the possibility to follow Joni on her journey. I've read some of the latest interviews with growing interest and expactations, I heard the short-cut someone sent about the interview whith Aanda (Ghost??) I hope you can cope with my scandinavian english - a long delurking phase makes it harder to write. So my regards to my fellow scandinavians Marion and Bene for keeping up a most sophisticated english :-) I am excited to read about Joni's new album. I also find it inspiring to listen to the tracks from the forthcoming tribute album. I loved Prince's version of "A case of you" And I'm so loooking forward to get a computer and internet in my own home. Maybe - then I will break through this delruking more often... Best ! Oddmund, Norway Like Bene - I would really love to attend a Joni-fest. I'm not reformed yet. Still quite unorganized...But to be a part of it, well... it sounds like a very warm arrangement ! However, this being said, what would you say is Joni's best album in the last 20 years? Why that one? What are some of the direct changes you see in her music? - -Monika P.S. How about in more recent tours you have seen her in, does she still play it? The dulcimer is such a fascinating instrument really. Also, on her more recent albums, would you say she plays more guitar or more piano? Or perhaps it is the same ratio as it was in the earlier part of her career? It seems that early on she plays just a bit more guitar than piano usually. So? I read in an interview she mentioned Herman Hesse and I tried him out. Very good, if I do say! I also see she likes Nietzsche (I already love Nietzsche....he makes a lot of sense sometimes). She also mentioned Plato's Republic in the videos we saw at Jonifest, which I will soon read. In addition, a mention of the Catcher In The Rye was made (I read that a while ago....it might be my favorite fiction book---that and 1984 anyhow). And I've seen her say various other things that I can't recall right now. So what do you remember her saying she likes off the top of your head? Thanks, Monika P.S. I have my reading spurts sometimes and read quite a bit....then I have my reading famine....in which I read nothing for quite a bit...... ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2007 12:42:20 EDT From: Motitan@aol.com Subject: Joni and Marc David Chapman and Shadows and Light Well, fortunately, as soon as I got back from Jonifest, "Shadows and Light" by Karen O'Brien had come in and was sitting on the table. I started reading it the other day and am currently going into 1974 in the book. I must say, it is very, very, very well written thus far. I also appreciate the author explaining things rather objectively. Often in bio's, you get a very opinionated, colored depiction of a person shaded in with the author's own perspective---leaning towards either the "I love the ground this person walks on" or "Can you believe the nerve of this person?" So I have to say, it is very refreshing to find something more objective (though I suppose with everything anyone writes a bit of themselves go into it). In the book, I can't believe it has a quote from an interview with Marc David Chapman in it. That part made me cringe when I read it and still gives me chills. If you haven't read the book (which most of you probably have?), Chapman says he now listens to more soothing music and has been listening to and playing on guitar a lot of Joni Mitchell. How every disturbing. Now I believe in change as much as the next guy, but I think as far as Chapman is concerned, his changes should be restricted to behind bars. He's done enough damage. - -Monika ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2007 12:16:59 -0400 From: "Jenny Goodspeed" Subject: Re: Jonifest next year Hi Monika, I've often imagined doing this myself, but I don't have a camcorder, which limits me somewhat. : ) Go for it. NRH has more of a fuller sound whereas TI has more of a stark sound, in some cases anyway. However, the starkness serves the song so it's not really an issue. Both have some POWERHOUSE songs, some good ones, and a clunker or two. TI has "How Do You Stop" which is not Joni's song anyway - and an odd choice for a cover as the banality of the lyric (How do you stop the ripening corn...? puh-leeze) really is visible when displayed beside Joni's own. I used to think "Last Chance Lost" was just OK until I heard Bettye Lavette breathe lifeforce into it. NRH has "Nothing Can Be Done" & "The Windfall" both of which are subpar by Joni standards. The former would be the last writing collaboration she would undertake with her former husband Larry Klein, none of which are very strong compared to her other work. TI won a Grammy, but you can never know if the Grammy folks were just awarding previously ignored work. After those two, TTT from '98 and coming in at the bottom (always) would be 1988's Chalk Mark In A Rainstorm which is nearly ALL clunkers. I'm not really including the orchestra albums or any of the dozen or so compilations she did this century. NPIMH: "Speculation well who's to know.." Ha! Well, we know now! Coyote = Sam Shepard, definitely. Thanks, Richard! And you were at a Bob Dylan Symposium? Cool! But, hey! Hold on a minute. Why is there no Joni Mitchell Symposium? I know we have the Joni Fest, but what about a scholarly symposium/conference? Joni scholars unite! I think he should be put in a room and be forced to listen to John Lennon 24 hours a day and watch various Lennon footage at the same time, ala Clockwork Orange, room 23 in LOST...till he is driven mad. I've heard of camus but has anyone read Grenier? I don't really know anything about him... Incidentally, I LOVE Joni's comment about reading certain sections of books and then stopping at a certain point because she feels that she is somehow mystically MEANT to stop at a certain point... and how certain portions of books connect with each other and with her on a deep level... I can relate to that as well... certain sentances, paragraphs etc... sometimes seem like they were written just for you, they open doors for you into other times in your life, and they provide insights into your life and the world around you... _________________________________________________________________ Download Messenger. And do something about that dog though, yeah? Those of you who did not make Jonifest missed my unrequested show and tell of my mangled arm from a dog I recently adopted. For the record the write up from the adoption shelter was that the dog was a 'family dog' They forgot to mention the family she was a member of was the 'Manson family'. Debbie the dog went to heaven yesterday. Bless her little soul, Barbara _________________________________________________________________ Download Messenger. Join the im Initiative. The experience was a 2-carat diamond surrounded by the black carbon of my travel experience, and it made all of the travel trouble worth bearing (times a zillion). I'm still in need of a killer night's sleep, but I'll post later with more details of my "newbie-fester" experience. I was going to say, "and with special thanks," but those thanks would have to go out to everyone, plus extra-special thanks to some very special people who worked very hard to make the mojo happen. And, WHAT A ROOM FULL OF TALENT! After hearing just a few people perform, I turned chicken and decided there was no way in hell I was going to get up on that stage to do a set. I managed to get my film (remember that stuff?) in for processing today and should have it tomorrow. If any of the photos come out OK, I'll post 'em. I'm also feeling inclined to write a travel story which will not be Joni content, but if anyone wants to read a hopefully humorous account about how someong "cut across my bow" on an off-ramp in Jersey and forced me to run my rental car into a curb. or a polite yet scathing description of my hideous hotel room in which I had to repair the air conditioner, TV remote and shower and rely on the kindness of a stranger to get my gear up the stairs (no elevator, no warning), it shall be forthcoming as an optional read. Heck, that's only an teeny-weeny part of the fun. What a special group of people. Wow.
