Jim L'Hommedieu wrote about the BBC Interview and music critisising some of the content, I think at this point in her carrear any new Joni Music is welcome, IF sounds very good , / and yes I think that she brought some backing tracks with her to play under the Interview, I dont think that there will be some 3 min of Orchestiral music with no vocals , hell its possitble that they are sketches.Apart from this I think as some person put it " Midi music " is once again insulting to the likes of Depeche Mode and others. Rolling Stone says of them "They are a band from the Eighties moslty synth music" ????? tell me why is so called modern music (2007) regarded as new i say new ??all they do is strum guitars and sing songs that go up and down the scale with no reall purpose .Todays music was largley coverd in the 60's 70's and 80's nothing new at all !!!!!!!!!!!! hell Joni is a better Guitar player than 89% of modern day guitaristswho just strum strum and the drummer plods and plods Sooner or later surly this love of Guitar Bass and Drums wil end, after all the bands like the Who Police and all the Artist of that period what is there to experiment with anymore, call it Music but dont call it New ! ! Depeche Mode -- Keyboard music if you like will take over its got to. Music is stagnating, the sheer fact that were all drooling over a new Joni Mitchell album says powers for Music around today. The true fact about Keybard music is that not may bands have Keyboard players these days , why becaise ot takes a little bit of talent to play Piano or Keybords in the first place, you cant strum a Piano. I saw Howard Jones play in Vegas the other month he played an Acoustic set ( ok with a guitarist a very good one) It was a revalation to listen to Howard play his Yamaha piano live, what a Piano Player , !! what tallent he has , there is not many artists around today that could play a live concert wtih just a Piano and one back up guitairst, playing in so many styles of music. You cant fake Playing Keyboards well, you either have ability or not and most dont have ablitiy, so people in my opinion give Keyboard playing and MIDI music a bad Rap, as a way of coveiring up. Sorry to be outspoken. But "Modern Music" of today is 60's and 70's music not modern at all ( leaving aside Rap and Hip hop)I cant wait for Joni's new Album and the package that it comes in, I only wish she released a DVD style package to include pages of Lyrics that you courd read as you listen'd, shame on you to judge the Album before its released, what a nerve some of you have ! ! ! ! Judging her like you have.i agree with Joni's opinion 100% There's nothing shameful about having an informed opinion about something. Just because you want to be a salivating dog waiting for Joni to throw you a bone doesn't mean everyone else does. I haven't listened to the BBC interview but if I do her music will be under the same scrutiny as anyone else's. In particular, I respect Dave's opinion as he is a talented musician/engineer who obviously knows and loves Joni's music. If it was my choice, I'd rather people be critical than be a bunch of yes men... The boo-hiss award for incredibly crappy customer service is awarded to Alitalia for first losing Adriano's luggage but then, once having found it, taking sweet forever to get it to him. Performances that are stuck in my head right now, but you know there may be more: - Laura singing Danny California (I'm mind-boggled that anyone could not only remember all the words, but get them all in perfect rhythm and I could actually understand them when Laura sang it.) - - Kay Ashley, with Jenny Goodspeed on harmony, sining "Pink Moon" - more than once. I just love the chorus and couldn't listen to this too often. - - Chuck E singing that Caledonia song. I want a dulcimer! - - the night at songcircle when we were doing a lot of Joni stuff and everyone sang along and knew the words - - could see the look of sheer delight from the newby guy (I don't know his name but he sounded like a New Yorker to me) that he had found some fellow weirdos, uh, kindred spirits who *get* it. As I warn you, this is a very long post. So when you have some free time, grab a cup of tea, sit back, and relax and read. First off I have to say, it's very hard to put into words what I personally experienced at Jonifest. First off, this was something that I really needed (but let's not get into that). It was something that will last in my mind forever (and probably yours too) and when I need some light, I can remember Jonifest and have that light. Anyhow, everyone at Jonifest was so generous, kind, funny, intelligent, and welcoming. It kind of makes me wonder what the hell is wrong with the rest of the world?! I'm not used to people being so kind for no particular reason. There's usually a catch (maybe it's the people I know) and here there was no catch. It was so very refreshing as this list itself has proved to be. It was very interesting to put the names to the faces. But more to the point of this particular paragraph, I just want to thank all of you at Jonifest for your generosity. It really was good people having good times connected by the music of Joni Mitchell. I hope Joni knows she has such wonderful human beings as fans. Now to get into the particulars......I truly, truly, truly enjoyed all the performances at Jonifest. I was very impressed with the level of talent present, whether it was displayed through Joni songs or other songs. And of course the attention to sound, getting everything just right, just blew my mind. It's strange to get that sort of treatment. I can't say that I liked anybody's set more than anyone else's because I found something inspiring in each of them (not to mention I was watching all you guitar players' fingers and I picked up on quite a few things!). Plus, I really liked everyone's song selection. I must say it was so amazing to be surrounded by MUSIC all the time. If we could have Jonifest 24/7 the way it was, THAT would be the life. I really enjoyed the song circles each night. I have to say that Sue's performance of "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow" from the last night in the circle is still in my mind. Man how excited was I to hear that song in the circle! I also really enjoyed the songwriter's workshop. Not too many attended that but for those who did, I thank you for your words, your songs, and so much more. And I wish you all would continue writing or get back into the swing of writing. There is no greater feeling than after you write a song (I have said this many times). Please continue doing so and I'd be more than happy to listen to anything any of you record! Send me an email offlist man! I was truly taken aback by the DVD screening. We watched the entirety of a Much Music Presentation with Joni from the mid 90's. It was so very intimate I felt like I was almost there even though we were just sitting watching the big screen. I really loved hearing Joni's later music as I have not heard much of that (I'm working on getting her albums---in chronological order...I'm on Hejira). Her words really do paint a picture. She is a painter in more ways than one. Even my friend Nickey who I made come to Jonifest, said Joni should really write a book because she has a way with words. But back to the DVD.........I was very impressed with how warm, funny, and open Joni was in that performance/appearance. I think the media likes to portray her as this distant, almost bitter artist who is so engrossed in her own world. Well, I'd like them to see that appearance. She was anything but distant. Very funny as well. Eat that. (We also watched a couple tunes from her Japan concert in the 90's and something with the word "Garden" in the title which also was a concert from the 90's). I also want to thank everyone who donated items to the raffle. I won so many wonderful things that I am engrossed in my own little Joni world with her performances and interviews and so on. I just watched "The Way It Is" and "Wembley" (don't you worry now...I'm sure I'll post questions about them soon enough!). I also want to thank everyone for the wonderful conversations we had--Joni related and Joni-less. I found out many things about all of you I had never known. It gives me a glimpse into who you people are. And of course, I LOVED the Joni talk. I learned so much more about Joni that my hunger for knowledge was being fed any time there was a Joni conversation. I loved hearing everyone's story of those who met Joni or seen Joni live or just gave their opinions on her and her music. So very enlightening! However, I made the mistake of taking the Joni talk home with me. I was talking to my brother and sister about Joni like I had been talking to you guys at Jonifest and they just responded with things like, "are you going you live in Joniville now?" Or..."Ok.......I'm trying to watch tv here, I don't really care".....or "Ok you love Joni we get it already..." or "you're very strange Monika." That was my mistake in trying to make a one sided conversation! I also want to say that the early, early Joni recordings we listened to on Saturday afternoon were wonderful. Thanks for that! It was so fascinating to hear some of the songs with Joni singing and playing what she normally does alone with a backing band and simply having that band change the whole tone of the song. It really blew me away. I also enjoyed all the unreleased, never before heard songs as well as Joni's stage banter. She's so funny! All those recordings just opened another door really. I am grateful to have been there. Well...I think those were the highlights (or things that I remember anyhow). Yeah, I guess I didn't have much to say on Jonifest, haha. All I can say is that I could have not asked for anything more. Jonifest exceeded all my expectations in every way. So much so that I keep looking at the time thinking about what I'd be doing if it were still Jonifest...."oh now I'd be having lunch.....or listening to great performances...etc etc." I am so very grateful to have experienced Jonifest 2007! And I am proud to be a Joni Mitchell fan! I'm so thankful I discovered her music when I did and am at the point that I am. It's my Joni journey and it only keeps getting better and better. - -Monika P.S. Nickey is now fully converted. She is a Joni fan and we are spreading the word on Joni! P.S.S. I've got a much greater appeciation for Hejira now after listening to so many perform songs from it or hearing songs from it in the circle. The words on that album really are from a different world man. I mean I liked Hejira before but I think I really get it now. It's still something that will never be finished though. It's that kind of album and what could be better than that? That's how it's MEANT to be and I understand. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2007 15:40:21 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: My impressions of Jonifest (Maybe the longest post in history!) Hey Monika, Thanks for a great read - it was exciting for me to see because it took me back to MY first Jonifest (1999) and the magical feeling I experienced, truly unlike anything else that I know of. And now that I've been to 8 or 9 of the things, I'm not SURPRISED by the magic anymore, but it's still there - the proof is in what you said so eloquently. I commented to several people that Jonifest to me is a microcosm of what the world SHOULD be; we come from all different backgrounds, countries, orientations, and united only by our admiration for Joni we can surround each other with love and acceptance. It's a bizarre phenomenon but it IS real. 'yvette in english' was the highlight for moi. song circle that night is a wee bit hazy, perhaps for most of us, lol. i seriously can't think of what went on. anybody? saturday morning i was lucky enough to be part of the songwriter's workshop. we shared songs, but also did a great deal of talking about our own process of writing and our experiences performing our own songs. i want to take you all home with me, it was such a caring and supportive group. we were maybe gonna meet up the next day to try writing a song together, but sadly i stayed up way too late saturday night and couldn't muster the brain cells for it, which i regret. as others have already described, we were treated to never before heard early joni recordings on saturday afternoon. i couldn't believe it. thanks to ashara and to the man who brought the recordings. i didn't catch his name. very surprising to hear young joni singing in a full warm voice distinctly non-helium. the recordings were alternated with the giving away of i don't even know how many raffle items. oh man, did anyone else's heart sink when the bartender won one of the lithographs? hey, check e-bay this week folks. saturday night i got to hear two of my favorite joni songs: bobs muller and sartorius collaborating on 'slouching towards bethlehem' and sue mcnamara playing 'silky veils of ardor'. if angela is this year's human jukebox, then sue is the human *joni* jukebox. how great is that? sue cameron did a too-short set, but included an original, so we forgive her. smokin' barbara little provided some much needed soul and kick ass vocals. and, best of all, kay and i got to be her back-up singers, choreography and all. it was a blast. thanks barb! i think angela did her set saturday (she's not on my cheat sheet). she has a sweet voice and did beautiful renditions of 'that song about the midway' and 'urge for going'. i was speechless during sugarpants, the evening's grand finale. i don't even know what to say except that i was disheartened to see that smurph has better legs than i do. sigh. the song circle that night may have been my favorite. we were all in good voice and on the quiet and attentive side. lots of joni. btw, many thanks to sue mcnamara for volunteering to stay until the bitter end and lock up the performance space. sunday i spent much of the day asleep. such a waste. but i couldn't keep my eyes open. i stayed up most of the night saturday, imbibed way too much, drunk-dialed my better half just to hear his voice on the answering machine, and woke up to find bob sartorius' name tag on my dresser, don't ask me how. did anyone pick up mine? chris, can you make me a new one? i did wake up in time sunday to see an hour or so of the 'intimate *and*interactive' program that featured joni. you could tell the internet had just caught on at the time and the producers of the program were *very* excited about technology, lol. people could email, phone in, even FAX questions to joni. it was a great program actually. joni did a lot of talking and a lot of playing. and i was glad to be sitting next to stephen from san francisco who was also tearing up every time she opened her mouth to sing. even watching her, i don't really understand what joni is doing with her right hand most of the time and the woman hits each and every note pitch perfect. i don't know how she does it. the schedule for sunday night was put together on the fly, so i'll forget somebody i'm sure. we all had the honor of seeing patrick leader's debut fest performance. he and les r. quickly put a couple of songs together that evening. 'crazy cries of love' and ooh, rats, what was the other one? i know patrick sings tenor in his chorus, but he has a really rich and lovely sounding baritone. against all odds, chuck e. made it to full moon on saturday i believe and on sunday night treated us to a great set including a couple of songs accompanied by his custom dulcimer. dr. laura covered the red hot chilli pepper's 'dani california'. i'm pretty sure that's a fest first. it rocked. also a fest first maybe: sisotowbell lane? i love how we can go to fest and hear covers of 'sisotowbell lane', 'crazy cries of love', 'slouching towards bethlehem', 'silky veils of ardor', 'yvette in english'. where else can you hear stuff like that? monika did a set of all originals. in addition to playing great rock style guitar, she's a hilarious stand-up comedian. kay ashley closed the evening with a transcendent set. oh it turns out kay *also *plays the dulcimer. really kay, we get it, you can play a half dozen instruments, sing beautifully in both your lower and upper range, and write amazing songs. do you have to rub it in? oh AND kay learned how to operate the sizeable sound system in one night and tirelessly ran sound by herself for the rest of the weekend. a very big thanks to kay. catherine mckay, at the request of many dogged fans played 'cold blue steel and fire' for us even though she hadn't picked up a guitar in quite sometime. she comes as close as anyone i've seen to nailing joni's right hand technique. thank you catherine. and boy i agree with you. fest does bring one's emotions to the forefront laughing and crying, you know the rest. i was so lame and turned in early that night (2 am is apparently early at fest) and missed sue mac singing my request for her to play 'don't interrupt the sorrow' and that is probably my biggest regret. i even swallowed half a caffeine pill, but to no avail. sorry sue! i'm forgetting lots. but this is getting long enough. i want to say thanks to ashara and les irvin. you guys make this magic happen and you make it appear effortless, and we *know* it can't be. thank you! miss you all, jenny (p.s. songwriter workshop attendees feel free to send me new stuff. i know stephen and sue were inspired to write some more that afternoon. maybe we can have a virtual support group. oh and monika - great post on fest. brought tears to my eyes. ) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2007 19:35:41 -0400 From: Victor Johnson Subject: Re: Bad news for you folks in the UK That would equal about $2,088 US dollars. Certainly something to look forward to! Aside from the thrill I get from the artists who will perform in this tribute (or any Tribute album for that matter), I am always fascinated at how songs and artists are sequenced. If I assume that the sequence of the tracks is similar to the one on the Nonesuch website, then Sufjan Steven's "Free Man in Paris" is a nice intro, I think. Then followed by Bjork. I can imagine several fans of these artists getting excited ho their faves are lined up in the album. I thought putting Caetano Veloso in track#3 is also a welcome decision. Not too many people who are weaned on artists in the list may know who he is and I am excited that this prefecture of Tropicalia is included cheek by jowl with other performers. Then Brad Mehldau's DITS is bound to be a refreshing track after the vocals before it. And a good segue to introduce the deep contralto of Cassandra Wilson. I must say that I am probably among the very very few people who is not taken by Prince as an artist (in all of his various incarnations) but I love ACOY a lot so there is so much to get excited about. Plus, Cassandra's voice is quite of a different texture and tonality and of a different fach than Prince, so this is a good transition. Then there's the angelic voice of Sarah Mac whose version of Blue comes close to eclipsing Joni's performance in my opinion. Then Annie Lennox with LOTC? I am not worthy. While Lennox have her ups and downs in terms of song choices and musical arrangements (especially in "Medusa"), who can ever ever forget her unforgettably exquisite version of "Everytime We Say Goodbye" in the Cole Porter songbook in 1991? So anything musical that comes out of Annie is bound to be (almost always) beautiful. Then Emmylou Harris. I like her alright but not a big fan. My former dissertation advisor is a huge fan of Emmylou and I should tell him about this tribute CD. I think Elvis Costello's performance of "Edith and the Kingpin" is a better transition after Lennox. Then after Costello, to have Emmylou. Then followed by James Taylor and have k.d. lang close the CD. I doubt if people want "Help Me" as the last song in the CD but I thought having k.d. lang as the artist to close a CD would have been great. Especially if we are talking about her version of "River" with Madeleine Peyroux. But those are very minor quibbles. Much as I admire Judy Collins and how her voice remains almost umarred by the passing years, I am satisfied that she was not included in the tribute. But I wished they got Ute Lemper in there somewhere. As a final aside, I have enjoyed the following standout performances from selected tribute albums which range from excellent to bizarre: (1) No Prima Donna: The Songs of Van Morrison (standout: Marianne faithfull's "Madame George") (2) Red Hot + Blue: Tribute to Cole Porter (standouts: A. Lennox "Everytime We Say Goodbye", k.d. lang "So In Love", Aaron Neville "In The Still of the Night") (3) If I Were A Carpenter: Tribute to the Carpenters (standout: American Music Club "Goodbye To Love", Grant Lee Buffalo "We've Only Just Begun"). (4) September Songs: Tribute to Kurt Weill (standouts: Betty Carter "September Song", Mary Margaret O'Hara "Furchte Dich Nicht") (5) Time and Love: The Music of Laura Nyro (standouts: Jill Sobule "Stoned Soul Picnic", Holly Cole "Sweet Blindness") (6) The Songs of West Side Story (standouts: Chick Corea's Electric Band in a duel with Steve Vai's band "The Rumble", Trisha Yearwood's "I Have a Love" -- and the most bizarre but actually quite an inspired choice: Little Richard "I Feel Pretty") (7) One Amazing Night: Burt Bacharach tribute (standout: Elvis Costello "God Give Me Strength", David Sanborn and George Duke "Wives and Lovers", Sheryl Crow "One Less bell to Answer") (8) Tapestry Revisited (Standouts: Manhattan Transfer "Smackwater Jack") (9) "I Am Sam" soundtrack which is a quasi-Beatles tribute album (standouts: Sarah MacLachlan "Blackbird", Ben Harper "Strawberry Fields") (10) Hellhound on my Trail: Tribute to Robert Johnson (standouts: David "Honeyboy" Edwards "Traveling Riverside Blues", Susan tedeschi "Walking Blues") (11) Endless Miles: Tribute to Miles Davis (standouts: Gary Peacock "So What" and "Walkin'") And you know there are more tributes out there..... Many of you got to hear some very rare Joni recordings at the Jonifest. I have been sitting on this secret for almost a year now. I hate keeping secrets so, it's been a pain not to be able to talk about this stuff but, I gave my word and that's always important to me. In June last year, Joey McGowan wrote to me to ask me to design some CD covers for some recording that he had in his collection. He said these recordings had never been heard by anyone before, possibly not even Joni. He contacted me because of a recommendation by Bob Muller. Thank you for that, Bob. Joey's intention was to make up CDs and distribute them to JMDL members. Two CDs went out to a couple of people but he was immediately contacted by Joni's management and asked to stop. They are deciding if they want to put together a retrospective box and include these recordings. Joey was also in contact with Chuck Mitchell and Chuck handed over several recordings he had in his possession too. I hope I don't upset anyone by explaining this but, I asked Joey if it was OK to talk about this now that they have been presented at Jonifest. Some of you also got to see my designs and I hope they do justice to these amazing recordings. I am excited about the possibility of my designs being used for an official release. I believe Chuck, Joel Bernstein and possibly Joni have all seen my designs and are impressed. I'm so glad that a little piece of me made it to Jonifest. I only have 2 of the CDs and I will treasure those. I have not yet heard the others so, I really hope they make it into a retrospective. It has been an honour to be involved in this project and I am grateful to Joey McGowan. I hope he writes to the list with his side of the story. People like us who were not there vicariously experience the warmth, the talent and the immense joy floating in the air during those few days. I am so envious. Last week a couple of friends invited me to watch a movie with them. After dinner, I got really nauseous and suddenly felt cold and clammy. Food poisoning, I thought. My friend who is an MD have a more grim prognosis but I won't bore you with that (although I I think it is just an overdose of very 'heavy' films that I saw back to back: David Lynch's "Inland Empire" and Cristi Puiu's "The Death of Mr Lazarescu"). So we ended up going home and because I felt guilty that I spoiled my friends' fun by getting sick, I asked them if they want to watch a film at home instead. So I ended up fishing "Woman of heart and mind" from my dvd collection. I have not seen this docu in a long time and I found myself loving it. But the more satisfying realization is that all my friends loved it as well and now they want to borrow my Joni CDs. They are not exactly huge Joni fans although they know a thing or two about her. Interesting for me to hear what sort of info they know about Joni. And they found her early life in Canada as the most interesting, riveting and tears-inducing of all. One remarked that seeing Joni speaking about her life back then made it look like they are two very very different people. Not just the voice difference but also the manner she has come to adopt in later life. One other friend said that the use of songs to tell her story is a unique touch while another said that her much later (and presumably darker) voice is more characterful. After the docu and after talking about Joni some more, they said that they never thought she is more talented than what they perceived her to be. I am often very curious how people get to know an artist, idea, theory, film, etc. for the first time and how subsequent encounters with those texts made them form their opinions. WOHAM is indeed a good film for a Joni intro, but by no means should it be the definitive or the last word about Joni and her artistry. The politics of representation is such that some aspects are more emphasized than others while leaving out details that may be just as interesting (it is like knowing that Helen Keller is not just this woman famously remembered for her physical limitations but as also a radical socialist during her time). But Joni is Joni as we know her and I often wonder what she thinks about the representations made about her. And what other info do we not know about her that may paint a different picture that we have of her.
