I arrived back about 20 minutes ago, after sneaking out early this morning with Laura, who I dropped off at Syracuse. I apologize for forgetting the words on the number I did last night. In my defense (yeah, excuses, excuses), I hadn't played guitar or sung in a year, due to a lot of changes that had gone on in my life in the last year and a half. I also apologize for the mini-meltdown I had last night. I also apologize for apologizing. I realize after speaking to several of you that we are always hardest on ourselves, aren't we? There is something about being at a Jonifest that brings emotions to the fore and makes the skin a little thin. It was great reconnecting with some of you I had met before and meeting others that I didn't know before. It was truly wonderful meeting the young people - Monika and her friend Nikki (sp?) as well as Brenda's son Jean-Luc (or John Luke?) and his two buddies. They had me in stitches at dinner on Sunday night doing their voices and funny faces. Thanks also to Bob Murphy for keeping me laughing too and constantly reminding me how OLD I am. (My actual factual birthday is today and I turned 87 or 88 or something - ask Mr Murphy.) Despite his sometimes cruelty to me, I'm going to make an effort NOT to call him Smurph anymore, because apparently he doesn't like that. Although, because I'm noted for my bitterness and cruelty, I should probably keep it up. Can't say more now because one of the kids (little Judy or little Timmy maybe?) is bugging me to go downstairs and get the stuff out of the car. Later. Chuck Mitchell is selling these as long as the buyer agrees not to distribute them...that's certainly Joni news. About the "second generation"; with digital recording, it's certainly possible to have them of the same quality as the master fwiw. How was the quality? How was the performance? Tell us more, dagnabbit! Cool that y'all got to hear these. I suppose since Joni was unsigned at the time, whoever recorded them would own them. Whether they would be able to sell them,,,,,seems unlikely....... (the 10th anniversary NorthEast fest) There is some cachet I suppose in being 'first" in terms of filing a brief on the proceedings (as I witnessed them anyway....) well, I can tell you there will be heaps of comment on the Sugarpants revue, rounds of deserved praise for Ashara and upon all the others who kicked in and made another such thing happen, many private resolutions made (I MUST learn BITB for next year!!) many new friends made, many old friendships rekindled, much great music still echoing in the Esopus valley, the vittles we 'et' were good, you bet, Kay at the board and later rocking at her other actual gig, the Full Moon crew (we even had the Moon!) Henry and Jenna and the kids.... Very road-weary here, but I wanted to be first! Godspeed to all those still traveling, be safe, come back to the pod for next year, please. All come. Thanks for Joni, Les, (both). Mike, (for putting up with me) and of course, Mama Ashara. NP Jenny Goodspeed's forthcoming CD! Forgive me for making this brief- I'd love to really get into this stuff but we're leaving at 5 AM for a plane to Florida & way behind with packing & personal loose ends. Keep in mind that some of what I say about the rarities (as I'll refer to them) may be subjective and I'm sure others will follow with their takes on this stuff as the rest of the folks return home & get online. What we heard was played through the sound system in the performance hall so it was loud and clear. From what I could tell, the quality of everything was flawless. We heard some of Joni singing with a band backing her (uhhh... you know, like Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett might have). We heard what could have been her first album. We heard Joni & Chuck together. I couldn't begin to tell you all we heard and we just TOUCHED upon what this fellow had brought... there's LOTS more. The earliest thing we heard was Joni from 1964; there was another thing from 1966 and I think something from 1965. All together, we listened to about a dozen and a half actual songs. On one item, Joni has this long monologue before the song, telling an anacdote. On some of the songs, Joni's voice actually sounded deeper than we're used to on her earliest releases (STAS, Clouds, LOTC, etc.) but maybe it was the way it was mixed. In every case, her singing is fine but some of the arrangements and backing vocals or instrumentation is odd (at least from what we're used to.) The stuff she did with Chuck actually sounded pretty good and Chuck himself sounded fine. Some of the songs we heard her sing were things I've never heard before and I think there are some real gems and revelations in there. One or two things had us raising our eyebrows a bit. Someone said, after hearing one particular song, "Well, if she released THAT, I'm sure her carreer would have taken quite a different turn." Maybe that's why Joni doesn't want these things to make their way into the public domain; I hear she does not like some of the material at all. I don't think Chuck will be selling any more of the collection he has until the lawyers all have their day, and disputes, royalties and other decisions are made by all the parties involved. Because these things were done before Joni's recording contract days, Chuck probably has ownership to them but because they're of Joni, she probably has some kind of rights. I'm not sure what will eventually happen with them but we're hoping some corporate entity gets involved to finally make it possible for fans to hear SOME of it... someday. Sorry I can't be of more help at this time but I'm certain the JMDL will be buzzing about this stuff for quite a few weeks. And I know others will have more info than I've offered. I am on record as saying Hejira is perfect, but, well, now it's more perfect and it reaches out from the speakers and kisses you on the mouth. Mmmm. I have uploaded two versions of this: one in Apple Lossless format for iTunes that will expand to burn a lossless AIFF CD (265MB) and one in highest bitrate mp3 for anyone not using iTunes (109MB). There is definitely a difference and some presence is lost in the mp3 version so if you have iTunes and broadband I recommend the former. Miles of Aisles is also done, although Mark L-T has brought to light a difference between releases of this album: the HDCD release he has contains more guitar retuning and stage banter between songs while the version I have has been previously edited to cut down on some of that. It's still 74mins long without the extra banter so maybe that's why they cut it out. This one is in highest bitrate AAC format (iTunes only) at present but I could upload an Apple Lossless version if there is demand. Turbulent Indigo As the albums move into the 90's the sound improved in general so this one was a little more subtle but soundstage, vocal timbre and bass mud are all improved in this version. This one is in highest bitrate AAC format (iTunes only) at present but I could upload an Apple Lossless version if there is demand. To obtain the links for these please contact me off list; you must already own the CDs requested.
