Just got back from a little mini Jonifest. I met a JMDLer for the first time ever. The wonderful Don Whiteman. What a fascinating guy he is. We sat and chatted about all things Joni and beyond in the middle of his kitchen renovations. "Swappin' stories..." Very hospitable. The subject of a Down Under Jonifest came up and, coincidentally, when I got home, I called my brother who told me he was going away with a bunch of friends families) to Barrington Tops (just northwest of Sydney) for a camping trip. He said the place is very nice, reasonably priced and has cabins available too. I'd like to get an idea of how many people could make it to such an event. Hell, I know you'd probably come over for it, right? Who else would be interested? Another coincidence, Don; as I was driving home, the song, Shiny Toys from Dog Eat Dog came on. Joni sang, "Here's a boy and his Beagle..." and I thought of you. And does anyone understand what she means? I'd understand if she said 'its healthy to have your heart broken when you are young and your body is strong'... Any comments...? In fact, I dismissed her after reports of her criticism of Joni's work. While channel surfing a few weeks ago, I came upon her recent Soundstage performance and I find myself intrigued by her new album, The Sermon on Exhibition Boulevard. It seems she was due to participate on a spoken word album of Lee Cantelon's book, The Word, a presentation of the the words of Jesus with no embellishment, and the songs for this album poured out. I traveled to New Orleans last Saturday and Memphis last Wednesday to hear her and I have to say that these two intimate concerts have really gotten next to me. This new album which is receiving some critical acclaim is not preachy and in fact takes some potshots at organized religion. Thought some of you might like to check it out. It doesn't help that it simply means anxiety in Danish.... Am confused because she and Ghost both talk about getting your angst out, and they know exactly when it happened. I always enjoy hearing from you. I find it almost hysterical when Joni says stuff like that. Did I sound like there is anything wrong with being a middle class woman?? What are they going to think I am...? Of course Joni's comment is ridiculous. She doesn't make good sound bites but she can't help producing them all the time! When I read it though, it made me think of the last time I went to a concert with the same orchestra as the one I heard tonight. You look at the performers, and you look at the audience, and there is more white, grey or died hair than anything else, and one or two members of the audience falling a sleep. Nothing wrong with those people (really! they probably have a richer life than I do for singing in that choir), but when you think that the music they perform was once ground-breaking, revolutionary, provocative, ingenious, vulgar, obscene... and so on, you just wonder what its creators would have thought about modern performers. I like reading interviews with Joni, but I wish they'd find some interviewer who would either find a way of talking to her that would stop her from ranting the way she does, or would challenge her a bit more. You know what they say about people who talk about themselves all the time: they really want to be in control of the conversation because they are afraid of where it might take them otherwise. Not aware of RLJ's "The Swimmer" album -- were you referring to "The Magazine"? I like "Pirates" a lot as well as her debut album and also I own "Girl at her Volcano" on CD. I got mine as a Japanese import -- definitely an album worth having if only for "Rainbow Sleeves", "My Funny Valentine" and "Something Cool" (which I heard her sing live early last year here in Carrboro). I like RLJ a lot and I was hooked on her music even before I became a Joni fan, so I view them in almost equal terms. Almost because I slightly prefer RLJ over Joni (in the same way that much as I truly love Joni's HOSL with such a passion, my first real love is really "Blue"). You have to tell me which album of Kurt Elling he recited your poetry! I like Kurt Elling a lot and I maintain that he is on the same level of improvisational skills as Mark Murphy and Jon Hendricks and probably just a step behind Eddie Jefferson. He is a very erudite man and read that he used to teach in a college setting. I like music interspersed with poetry especially if it thematically cohere with the album's concept. Elling has done that in the past, as well as Andrea Marcovicci who reads Edna St. Vincent Millay, Dorothy Parker and Anne Frank with such academic passion, actorly intensity and with a verve and vim that are just so irresitible to my ears.
