As I mentioned, I recorded both parts of the interview and have them as mp3s but part two is over 100MB and yousendit has a limit of 100MB for non paying members. I have been downloading a 5GB file for several days now and it is pushing my computer to its limits. It is almost finished now so, once I dump this file, I will make another attempt to upload both parts to another site that has a larger limit. Love Anita Skorgan's River. Any idea where she is from? Very easy on the ear. You're right about Kal Jansen. Good strong voice. I don't normally like the instrumentals but I had to listen to Mark Isaac 1. because he's an Aussie and 2. he has the same first name as me. but seriously, this is a lovely piece of jazz music. Great for a dinner party. She does do a gorgeous version of Woodstock - it will stop you in your tracks. Em http://www.myspace.com/emzdogz ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2007 06:26:44 -0700 From: Dave Blackburn Subject: BBC pt 2 mp3 and synth orchestras I recorded the interview from "my silly Mac things" and will post an mp3 if someone hasn't already. I am in agreement with Owen Duff about Joni having always been a byword for authenticity and the new material's cheapness vis a vis the synth arrangements. If you hired James Newton Howard or Hans Zimmer to do MIDI orchestra parts for you with their massive orchestral sample libraries AND orchestration knowledge you probably couldn't tell the difference from the real deal, so it is not MIDI per se that is lame, but Joni has neither of those resources. I fear this is what happens when you go it alone without a label: you think cheap, as every dime is coming out of your pocket up front. Joni famously doesn't listen to music anymore so how would she know what changes in aesthetics have happened since DED ("People didn't like the BIG drums on that record"--no they didn't like the big FAKE drums). Where I differ with Owen is that I didn't think the songs themselves were wonderful, at least based on the snippets played. Gone are the quirky chord changes, the compressed precision of language, the interplay with other musicians connected with her vibe and the emotionally wrenching vocals that signify a Joni Mitchell record. What I heard were light rhythm beds (probably loops from her Roland) and bedroom studio arrangements of songs with rather plain melodies and lyrics. I bet she'll read this post though and immediately rethink the project based on my input....................................not. Oh, this jealous lovin's bound to make me crazy: I just talked with Muller and Murphy on their way to Jonifest. Lots of laughs, lots of laughs! When the call started I could hear the words "James Taylor and Graham Nash" on the radio and we laughed about that. I said I wanted some "Willy" and it must have been a bad connection because Smurf said: "You want what?" When he finally understood me saying: "I want some Willy" he shot back: "Get in line, honey!" Ha! I felt like I was actually in the back seat, thrilling to the Brando-like things that they said as they were rock and rolling, rock and rolllllllllllllING! We talked about their visit with Jody and Scott last night, Jody being the bologna (or the ham) in the middle of that Bob hug sandwich, and I offered to be the cheese (who stands alone) and we laughed some more. They are in the middle of some navigating roundabouts and turn-offs, and we talked about the landscape and a paved paradise and a pile of trailers or something (they drove right past that tragedy) and the black road double yellow lines and the fine white lines of the free freeway. And you won't believe THIS: they just passed a hitcher and did not even pick him up. They left him a prisoner on the fine white lines of the freeway! They think they are about half-an-hour away (that was at noon EST), but might be headed the wrong way on Rte 28. I asked Smurf to give Muller a little kiss for me as they were driving, but he adamantly refused. I said: "Just a little one on the cheek?" and he said: "I'm not kissing ANY of his cheeks!" So, I left them, westbound and rolling, taking refuge in the roads, thinking of the pleasure they're going to have. Ha. I'm still smiling from that call. Gotta love 'em. Gotta love all the happy shiny Joni people! May you all have a most wonderful, splendid, magnifique and magical fest! And Monika, "I hope they finally fixed your automobile" -- and that your brother's holds up with no brakes complaining. Love & peace, Patti P., settling down into the clickety clack of the peace train (sounding louder!) with the clouds and the peace and the star(s) to read, late for my appointment at the Space Buggy service station (Hi RR! David Sapp requested that I work on that album; even though it is a good sounding album to begin with I made it a little less mushy and brought the guitars and voice forward.
