I was prompted into joining again after listening to the BBC interview, and just have to weigh in on this - I thought the songs (apart from the strange BYT rework) were wonderful, especially the piano stuff, BUT the 'orchestral' synth sounds dire! It would be an absolute crime for the CD to be released with those sounds on it - I'm always expounding the greatness of Joni's work to friends, and I know that if I were to play them her new material as it is they would laugh. And reviewers will tear it to shreds. I know for Joni these are just 'colours' in her music, but unfortunately to the rest of the world they sound cheap, inexpressive, and moreover totally fake. Joni's work has always been a byword for authenticity and 'realness' for me, so for her to have this plastic, synthetic noise crawling all over her music is something I can't bear to hear. One pos ter suggested that these are just demos - from what I've read and heard I don't think so, but maybe I'm wrong. Which brings me to a question: does anyone think there's a way that we (who are sad enough to care about it!) could convey this message, sensitively, to JM? Just to impress upon her how fantastic those songs would sound with real, living, breathing musicians contributing? I'd even be willing to pay what I could afford to get it sorted, or I'd sit down and transcribe the songs myself! Sorry for my returning post being a bit of a rant but this really matters to me for some reason... I get some impression that JM doesn't think anyone particularly values her music, and so doesn't really think of it as that important. How wrong she is if so! Why, it's Smurf!) I thought I would go ahead and send April's Covers Volume a day or two early - so here it is: http://download.yousendit.com/C5B06C2F270A3571 Thanks a bunch to: Paul M (once again) for his contributions to this month's CD which is really chock full of goodies, along with a couple of April Fools as well. Here's the playlist: 1. The Kim Portnoy Trio - Morning Morgantown: A wonderful way to kick off a volume, Kim has a Vince Guaraldi style and brings a nice jazz feel to a song that typically doesn't get that treatment. This one should get you in a good mood and get your toes a-tappin'. 2. Mark Isaacs - Both Sides Now: Australian jazz pianist Isaacs serves up a tasty chunk of Jonijazz with this 7.5 minute workout, presented in classic jazz trio format with bass and brush drums. Lots of nice improvisational work on this one. 3. The Soundalikes - Big Yellow Taxi: Gee whiz, with a name like "The Soundalikes" do you think they're bringing anything original to the party. Nope - they try to get as close to the Counting Crows cover as they can. Why bother? I think more people have covered the CC version than have covered Joni's original recording. 4. Anita Skorgan - River: A very lovely and gentle version, with a nice jazz feel and a muted horn (a la Mark Isham) which I'm always a sucker for. 5. The Pennine Folk - The Circle Game: Long story - sorry in advance but I think it's worth sharing. This Pennine Folk LP ("Both Sides Of The Pennines"), recorded in the late 60's by this English folk group, showed up on ebay and a huge bidding war ensued as there are quite a few people who collect rare British folk. The LP eventually sold for about $500, and no I wasn't the one who placed the winning bid. But I was able to at least enter the track into the JM.com database which got the attention of one of the members of the band (who must have Googled "Pennine Folk" or something). He contacts me and says that he was watching the auction along with other members of the band and they were so excited about the demand it drew that they decided to reform for a reunion concert - sadly, one of the band members had died but the rest were still around and excited about playing together. The fellow who was emailing me originally emailing me and informed me that they still had a copy of the LP and would transfer it to CD and send me a copy, which they did and now I'm sharing it with you without having to spend $500. Ain't the internet grand? Oh, and their recording is fine as well in that 'late-60's British-folk sort of way. 6. Damien Goya with Francis Goya - Both Sides Now: Cheesy but pretty - it's a Pan Flute version of BSN. And yes, Zamfir was also on this CD but doesn't appear on the track, so won't get the MASTER of the Pan Flute but I suppose Damien is the Sub-master or something. For some reason this recording makes me think of the "Kung Fu" TV show and I find myself looking around for a hand to snatch a pebble from. 7. The Eyewall Band - Big Yellow Taxi: Another Crows cover...NEXT! 8. Klonakilty - Carey: 9. Klonakilty - River: Klonakilty are an Irish duo; she sings and he plays guitar and several other stringed instruments. They do a solid job of these two Joni tunes and are big fans as well. 10. Kai Jansen - Both Jansen: Just when I think I don't wanna hear another BSN, one comes along that makes me fall in love with the song all over again, and such is the case with this one. Kai's voice is a joyous blend of Gordon Lightfoot & Seal, and the arrangement is lively and original and a great match for the voice. 11. Su' Bop - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: I'm guessing that most won't like this one, but I do. Instead of the frenetic words-tripping-off-the-tongue pace, this one is more laid back and sloppy with a nice bar-brand saxophone trading licks with a stand-up bass. She scats a while, probably trying hard to remember the words which is also a challenge since obviously English is not her 1st language. 12. Northeastern University Downbeats - Big Yellow Taxi: Coed acapella from Northeastern University (duh) in Boston. Much more original in terms of arrangement and execution - they pattern the track after the CC's but bring their own thang to it, and the voices are clear and strong and the interplay is great as well. 13. Julia Murney - A Case Of You: Julia is a Broadway and cabaret performer, most famous for her role as the Witch in Wicked. Her take on ACOY is a solid one with a pretty guitar accompaniment. 14. The Silent Jazz Trio - Both Sides Now: Another jazz trio, but a whole 'nuther feeling from the earlier Mark Isaacs version. This trio is electric guitar, bass and drums and is a much faster paced take. Very crisp and clean jazz guitar with some nice arrangements and soloing. 15. Jonathan Rayson - River: Another NYC stage and cabaret performer, Jonathan's River is an appropriately emotionally-charged one. His voice is a nice combination of confidence and vulnerability which makes a nice match for this song. 16. Dolly Parton - The Circle Game: OK, so you knew that Ms. Parton put out BSN a while ago, but who knew about this one? It's actually not from one of her records but rather is the audio from an episode of her popular 70's TV show. And I like it better than her version of BSN, her voice (as well as her overall look for that matter) isn't as creepy and unreal here. 17. The Retro Rockets - Big Yellow Taxi: Oh wow, this vocalist is really awful. I suppose she imagines herself as a Janis Joplin type, only she is cursed with a limited range and tries to make up for it by screeching. Really painful to listen to. I will at least give them credit for not covering the CC version. 18. The Retro Rockets - Woodstock: The same band but a much more palatable recording. A really nice instrumental intro, unfortunately the guy singer is not much better than the gal - he sounds like a bad Jimmy Buffett impersonator, and she makes a return appearance singing backup vocals in the same cringe-inducing fashion. And it's too bad, since I do like the arrangement of this one. So there you have it - and I know what you're thinking..."Hey Muller, why only 18 tracks this time, you're shortchanging us, you SOB!"...well, not so...since there are a couple of longer tracks this time around I couldn't fit any more on - you're still getting over 77 minutes of Joni coverage here, so as my Dad would say "Stop your belly-aching!". Hope you find some stuff here to enjoy and listen to while we're festing away in the hills. And so we kick off a real Joni cover celebration for April - Volume 87 here, Retro Volume 14 coming up in a couple weeks, and the REAL tribute coming out on the 24th. Sweet! How wrong she is if so! If that were so I don't think she would have started this project in the first place. As per the synth sounds, its not uncommon for a recording to have scratch tracks that are later replaced with better sounding tracks but then I don't know why she would be sharing them if they were unfinished. In any case, she's been doing this long enough, I'll reserve any judgement till the final product is released, though definitely something to ponder. Someone could though let the Atlanta Ballet know that they would sound much better with actual, playing musicians instead of canned Del Monte music. One of the worst decisions they could have made. That said, I can say with complete confidence that Joni Mitchell would not be the least bit interested in getting our feedback or using our input to make changes to her music. She's been going her own way for 40+ years, disappointing many fans, critics and insiders along the way; she's not going to stop now. After all, nothing anyone says about her new work could be any more harsh than what she's been hearing most of her career. Michael Flaherty - --------------------------------- We won't tell. Woah, for a minute I thought you were decribing DED (duck!)... Welcome back to the list, Owen. Suggest something to Joni?....1. Ms. Mitchell does not accept criticism well 2. Is so headstrong she may add MORE of what you complain about 3. We are getting a new album--if she starts hearing complaints about it now, she may go back into her shell and paint for 10 more years.
