Thanks to the donations from all of you, the JMDL's kindness and compassion will be well represented there. Two beautiful bouquets of flowers will be present, one each to represent the JMDL and JoniMitchell.com. After the funeral, the flowers will be moved to the lobby of the retirement home where Joni's father lives. Many thanks to Kate Johnson for doing the legwork and making all the arrangements for the delivery of the flowers. This makes me wonder, what are your favorite cover songs by people in general? I mean people have been covering other peoples song since the beginning of time! I have to say that I always enjoy any covers the Beatles did. They covered Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Motown, etc etc and I can't say I find fault with their covers. They always did a good job. My particular favorite covers they did are "Twist & Shout, Long Tall Sally, and To Know Her Is To Love Her." I also really like "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" and "Roll Over Beethoven." I also like Stephen Stills' covers of Neil Young songs like "the Loner" and "New Mama." He put a good Stills rock twist on them. Other covers I enjoy thoroughly include the Who's "Summertime Blues," CSNY's "Woodstock," Crosby & Nash's "Urge For Going," Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower," etc. I'm sure there are many, many more but those are what come to mind first. How about you? - -Monika ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Well a while ago, they had one called "Rock Essentials" listing all the artists and bands that are essential to rock one way or another. And guess who is on page 17? Miss Joni Mitchell. Here is what they had to say: [At the bottom of the pages with the artists/bands they also list three essential albums by them and for Joni they have Blue, Court & Spark, and Hejira pictured.......also I will be scanning this onto my computer later today so if anyone wants the scanned original with the picture and everything send me an email offlist and I'll send it as an attachment): "There's a good change you know someone who went through a Blue period. While that epoch-making 1971 Joni Mitchell work cast a spell over an untold number of listeners, it's merely one highlight in a distinguished body of work by one of the most important women in the rock era. Interlacing folk, pop, country, jazz, and other sounds, Mitchell--born in Alberta, Canada, in 1943--started amassing a fan base late in the 1960's. After her eponymous debut, her second album, Ladies Of The Canyon, gave the world the now-classic "Big Yellow Taxi" and also contained "Woodstock," which soon after became a smash for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Then came other intensely reflective efforts, like 1974's Court and Spark--featuring "Help Me" and "Free Man In Paris"---as well as the jazzy The Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira, which was a precursor of world music. Each new record represents a bend in the road for this adventurous and innovative songstress. In the mid 90's, Mitchell released Turbulent Indigo, a musically plaintive, marvelously crafted recording whose lyrics centered on her profound concerns over societal violence, winning the singer-songwriter a pair of Grammys. Taming the Tiger and Both Sides Now followed, the latter place Mitchell in a lush orchestral setting, earning another Grammy. Mitchell declared the bravura 2002 release Travelogue her swan song as a recording artist. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ----------------- - -Mon NP: Stateline Blues-Stephen Stills ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Among the bajillions of cover tunes that I enjoy, The Stranglers' take on "Walk On By", Tom Waits' cover of the Bernstein/Sondheim classic "Somewhere", and Rickie Lee Jones' recording of "Walk Away Renee" have to be near the top of the list. And I love Joni's cover of "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" with The Persuasions - such a great selection for her both in spirit and lyrically and a rare opportunity for her to 'rock and roll ya now..." This is not only one of the great covers ever, possibly the greatest, but a great song in and of itself. (OTOH I'm not a Dylan fan. Rickie Lee Jones doing "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" always makes me feel good. The late great Susannah McCorkle doing Rupert Holmes' "The People That You Never Get To Love" is storytelling at its best. Aaron Neville doing a funky version of "In The Still of the Night" from the "Red Hot + Cool" tribute to Cole Porter album (which also boasts of Annie Lennox' near definitive "Everytime We Say Goodbye", k.d. lang's "So In Love" and Lisa Stansfield's "Down in the Depths". Miles Davis doing Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" both follows the melody yet has this delicious lag in its beat in terms of keeping time. American Music Club almost outdoing the Carpenters in "Goodbye To Love" from the "IF I were a Carpenter" CD. Holly Cole does a great "Briar and the Rose" by Tom Waits in her tribute album "Temptation". Sherelle Cary Smith doing an ultra-slow burner "Eleanor Rigby". I hope you all managed to catch part two of Amanda Ghosts interview with Joni on BBC 2. Although it seemed a little rushed, this was much more satisfying for me than part one. There were much longer snippets from the new album and Joni was quite candid. I learned some things that I didn't know before. I may have missed these things from other sources such as on this list but, I did not know that Free Man In Paris was about David Geffen. The lyrics make so much more sense now. Amanda Ghost is obviously a fan so, therefore, asks all the questions a fan would like to ask but, I was disappointed that she also used the opportunity to plug her own song. Naughty, naughty. This was meant to be about Joni. The snippets from the album gave a good overall feel for it and now I am really looking forward to its release. To me, TTT was an extension of TI but this album seems to be drawing styles from those two albums as well as earlier work. I can even hear influence from as early as Blue. "Gratitude" reminds me a lot of "Overture". It's putting her experience from Travelogue to good use. "Holy War" sounds fine. I was expecting to be heavy and it is. "If" is less than I expected and is a good example of when Joni tries to use another source for lyrics. It worked on "Love" but I'm a little dubious about the marriage of Kipling's words with Joni's music. I love the new arrangement of BYT. It's just a shame about the hoarseness of Joni's voice. I was trying to upload part one again but had some problems. I think it's because of the heavy workload I have given my computer lately. I may try again soon but part two may be a bigger problem. It is a bigger file (130MB). yousendit's limit is 100MB. You can always listen to the stream from BBC 2's online radio. Happy "hump day" everybody. Mark in Sydney ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2007 22:16:41 -0700 From: Subject: Prince Bjork and Sufjan cpvers Wowee - thanks for the link - those are a trip! Prince and Bjork sound like something from another planet yet there is a strength in both performances where their love of Joni's music seems to burst through. They are also well-produced. I started laughing halfway through Boho Dance with the thought that Joni may well have mated with Venusians years ago and these are her secret offsrping. If you can get past the uniqueness of their voices, there is something almost Joni familial there. As for Surjan, well - I think this is a song where one really needs to keep with somewhat of the original tempo to make it work. It segues from Quaaludes to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass meets trance music. I would have to imbibe many martinis and/or stay up way late at a club to probably get this one. ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2007 15:47:21 +1000 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: News From Here From the web site, themusic.com.au OPENING ACTS #2: BRISTOW FOR LANOIS Singer/songwriter Jackie Bristow will open for Daniel Lanois on his April tour of April through Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.
