Notaro" Subject: Re: non-Aussies I'd Like To Hear Cover Joni Songs Hi Joseph. Tracey was the only name I recognised. I have been a fan of her and EBTG since her performance with the Style Council. I was dubious when they changed their style from jazz to the dance style that got them onto the charts around the world. Tracey's voice has been the driving source. Your suggestion of See You Sometime and I Think I Understand is just perfect for her voice. Melancholy is right. I think that's what catches people by surprise. It matches the light jazz style they perfected way back in the early 80s which was referred to at the time as "Cafi Jazz" and is an interesting juxtaposition to their clever dance style now. Walking Wounded was a huge breakthrough for them. Beautiful, sensitive songs like, Fascination and Shoot Me Down makes me think that they could do justice to Joni. Maybe there could be a British tribute album. I am also looking forward to Tracey's new solo album. I now have 7 of the 12 tracks on the tribute album. Sufjan's track was downloadable. As was k.d. lang's, emmylou Harris', Bjork's and James Taylor's. I had Annie Lennox's from the B side of No More I Love Yous. I am curious though about Prince's, A Case of You. maybe I missed the discussion but, I've never even seen any mention of it here. Was it released on one of his albums? BTW I am not so impressed with k.d.'s Help Me. It's not a patch on here TV performance on the tribute special. I realise now just how much those musicians contributed. It's still good but just not as good as that performance. My 2 cents. The CD has become quite the collector's item and usually fetches $100+ on ebay. The version on the Joni tribute is the same recording. Prince started performing the song in concert about 25 years ago and there are a couple of live versions available as well. While it is a superb cover (and he even Princifies it by calling at "A Case of U") he omits the first verse, starting with "I am a lonely painter..." I guess I just don't get Prince. I do like some of his songs but there's something about him that just creeps me out. I had heard a live version of "Case of you" by him that I didn't care for at all. This is much better. He sure can hit the high notes (yikes!) On the other hand, I do like Bjork, but don't care much for her version of "The Boho dance". The Rolling Stones will be playing a festival at the Isle of Wight on June 10, their first UK festival appearance since 1976. The Stones have also announced 27 European dates for this summer. Meanwhile, Martin Scorcese's Stones documentary is slated for fall release, and he is teaming with Mick Jagger for another movie about the music biz, "The Long Play". Mick Jagger has expressed his desire to perform at the Isle of Wight gig with Amy Winehouse, who is on a roll herself, having made a big splash at the recent SXSW indie mega-festival in Texas. Winehouse is also scheduled to play at the Isle of Wight show. VH-1 Classic will run a Yes performance tonight at 10PM EST, from BBC Crown Jewels. Jackson Browne will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame June 7th in NYC. The classic Dylan doc "Don't Look Back" will be re- released as a special edition April 20th (4-20? Go figure). The DVD will add over 20 hours of extra footage of his '65 tour. Prince, Christina Aguilera, and Dave Matthews will do 3 shows together exclusively for Citi/AAdvantage credit card holders, but "Ho of the Week" goes to Kiss' Gene Simmons, who, with spouse and former Playboy model Shannon Tweed will reveal results of their dual facelifts, done to hype A&E's "Gene Simmons Family Jewels", April 1st. Jerry Garcia's widow has filed a patent claiming possession of Garcia's DNA, from existing hair locks, guitar straps, syringes, guitar picks, and clothing. It gets weirder; apparently Deborah Koons Garcia has made a deal with InvertoCelebro to replicate Jerry's sperm from his DNA sequence, which young women have already signed up to receive. Weirder, still, a spokesman for the company said with a straight face: "We did not come into these contracts prematurely." Lester Chambers reports that The Chambers Bros, members of The Drifters, The Coasters and Jackie Wilson's estate are suing the major record companies for pension embezzlement. Chambers says his band has never received a penny of royalties for the records they have made all these years, including the big hit "Time Has Come Today", which has been in 30 films.
