I must say that I was worried about the international mailing - sometimes it's fine, and sometimes there are problems (I'm still waiting for a CD I bought from the UK in January). But the Joni Cover gods were with me - I got it in about a week which is probably about the quickest you could expect. I only wish that it consisted of 12 NEW recordings - the Annie Lennox, Sarah McLachlin and Prince and JT recordings are old news. But the new ones are very creative - and like I said, I'm blown away that a Joni Tribute for the US market doesn't have BSN, BYT, Circle Game, or Woodstock on it. Very cool. I'm not much for Bjork, either - at least she's singing a decent song so the pain is somewhat lessened by that fact. Since this one is an advance promo there are no liner notes or anything so I'll still be buying the full release when it comes out 24 April. Meanwhile, Joni Mitchell Covers Volume #87 is about a week away. Bob - --------------------------------- Food fight? Enjoy some healthy debate in the Yahoo! You are right, though -- a lot of these singers are obscure but you may be surprised to know that you may have heard of them at one point. These singers were those I got to know in the course of spinning music (yep I still play a record once in a while) in the station. Jeri Brown - a jazz singer with a finely controlled contralto (not operatic, thank God) and whose musicianship is as sophisticated as her choice of material to cover. The two British jazz critics (Morton and Cook) who update their Jazz Encyclopedia every 5-6 years said Jeri's recorded outputs are "essential vocal outputs". She could sing a killer "Sweet Sucker Dance". Grazyna Auguscik - another fine jazz singer from Chicago who strongly reminds you of Patricia Barber. In fact both of them did collaborate at one point. Grazyna's (like Patricia) type of jazz singing is akin to Sheila Jordan (we all heard of Sheila, no?) and later Betty Carter. Grazyna can easily navigate the difficult and abrupt changes in "Carey". Laurel Masse - was one of the original singers of Manhattan Transfer before Cheryl Bentyne took over her spot in 1979 via "Extensions". Laurel has a deep voice and can outswing anyone. I saw her perform in the Cabaret Convention in 2005 in Jazz at Lincoln in NYC and of the 15 performers, she was one of the three highlights (the two others being Barbara Carroll and Adi Braun). Her extremely dexterous versions of "Fascinating Rhythm" and "Something's Comin'" make me confident she can "The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines". Lizz Wright - as Bob pointed out, Lizz already covered a Joni song. This Atlanta-based singer sounds like Jeri Brown and our own Sherelle when we talk about a wide vocal range. Lizz's standout (at least for me) track from her debut album "Salt" is her soulful rendition of Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise" before it became "End of the Line". You've got to hear her to believe that supremely gorgeous voice. "Man From Mars" or "Little Green" would suit her voice well although I think she can nail "Banquet". Nnenna Freelon - a jazz singer from Durham, NC. I first saw her in concert in Manila in 1990 back when there used to be a Philip Morris Jazz Festival. She was with then-unknown hornmen Joshua Redman (who covered a very fine "I Had a King") and Ryan Kisor. Nnenna's voice has an incredible elasticity that evokes both the great ladies of jazz like Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitz and contemporary singers like Holly Cole and even Ute Lemper. Her phrasing and storytelling style is more Abbey Lincoln and Billie Holiday than 1950s-era-Anita O'Day and come to think of it, I think she can probably acquit herself with "Dancin' Clown' even if I wish she would cover the songs along the lines of "For Free" and subvert the melody and bring out a difference nuance, a different vibe. Tracey Thorn should be familiar to our UK-based Listers. Tracey is the other half of the duo Everything But the Girl (with musical collaborator and partner Ben Watt). Her voice is very comforting and caressing and things that evokemelancholy but in a glorious kind of way. Her voice has deepened even more since that it is almost hard to believe it was the same voice used in "Eden" and "Love Not Money", not to mention her earlier group Marine Girls. Heard she came up with her second solo album in more than 20 years and I can't wait to get my hands on that disc. But Tracey's "Fighting Talk" performance makes me think she can flat out nail "See You Sometime" or "I Think I Understand". Vanessa Rubin - another underrated jazz singer from Washington. She blew everyone away in about the same time Nnenna Freelon came out with her debut album with songs like Coltrane's "Giant Steps" and throw sentimentality away in "Tenderly". She has quite a career and continued to make impressive jazz vocal records (only to dip low when she reinvented herself with her "This Is Me" album where her desire to do neo-soul and some Motown did not do her and the songs' justice, in my opinion of course). She has since relocated to Telarc label and got her groove back but almost no one knows her now. She can do daring stuff and I think will be impressive doing "Ethiopia" with just a bass as accompaniment or even just with drums and tackle "More Today Than Yesterday" --ooops got carried away by the music I am listening in the background. I wish some of these singers would have a solid following too. Sad affairs they don't. More than insight, Lori, Joni's DED gave me a sense that I was not alone in frustration when one sees firsthand how societies are crippled with disease, poverty and lies...avoidable atrocities that take life's essense away. That's when Joni's music and lyrics make the beating of my heart one with the beating of the drums of all those who care for all of mankind. My travelogues are definitely intertwined and influenced with and by Joni Mitchell's work. With time, I'd love to share my experiences with all those who find common thread in this compassion that Joni's always expressing. In reality, I didn't travel on motorcycle. Mine was more the Peugeot and Citroen diaries. I wish I had the guts to travel on a motorcycle because I love the ride of the motorcycle as a passenger only on open road through the mountains but I do worry too much to fully enjoy. I think it may be due to my father's fear he instilled in me since he lost a dear friend when he rode his Harley Davidson with a motorcycle club here in San Antonio way back in the 50's. He finally bought me a moped when I was 12 and I ran into the house full speed and I never got over that ordeal. :) I give you here a sister's salutation of gutsy courage to be able to have the cojones to ride that bike--that feel is sooo liberating! Anyway, back to DED! Joni has the biggest balls of courage. Not many female artists can compare, though I can say that this woman I met from Argentina and had a long conversation over a candlelight dinner with concerning the plight of the beasts of burden that gain nothing from their labor and humility. Her name is Mercedes Sosa and shares these same convictions and expresses it through her work. Mercedes lost a son because she would not stay quiet and she was exiled and lived in France for a long time. She's now back in Buenos Aires. But, back to the point of Joni and DED and me...it's the same howl in the dark! Do share your experiences, Lori. I'm sure it's the same beat and cry!! Jeannie PS No matter who we are and what we do, we're one and the same. Mercedes is like everybody else. People want to get up close and get star struck and I'm the same with Mercedes as I am with the little old Indian women. Well, Mercedes is from the Mapuche tribe now that I remember. Either way, people and fans do gather round her and she kept asking me in Spanish, "What do you want from me?" I'd say, "Nothing." And she kept on, "But you must want something from me?" "No, Mercedes, I don't." "But everybody wants something from me?" "Well, not I. I just want you to enjoy a nice dinner with my buddy and I." Well, her two managers and one of their wives tagged on, along with her female assistant and they put a damper on the evening. None of them truly cared about Mercedes' soul. All they saw was the glimmer and attention of fame and fortune. One of the managers who thought he was a Don Juan was grabbing me under the table and there were no bonfires in my spine..I saw was a pompous, selfish son of a bitch who thought of nothing but the smell of money and the wishes of his dirty dick. That's what comes along with the business. Anyway, Mercedes was happy with the dinner because she's a big woman and she devoured the food and I was like, "Mercedes. slow down, everybody's looking at you!" and she said, "I can't! I'm sorry but I love this food." :)) A friend of mine met up with Mercedes recently in Buenos Aires and she send her "saludos, besos y fuertes abrazos," to me in a letter and she knows I'm for real. That's all that matters to me. Bye, now! Thanks for listening and I'm sorry for those who get perturbed with long replies. I can't help it. I love Joni's work too much to stay silent!!
