Been meaning to. So many people rave over it. I have heard Toni Collette sing but I tend to remember her in Muriel's Wedding more and singing ABBA. I know she has a band and performs quite regularly around Sydney. I think my selection shows my age. None of these artists have released anything for years. There are a lot of fine artists but I'm not sure how they would sound covering Joni's songs. Missy Higgins is definitely someone I should have included. She is the direct result of the influence of Joni on Australian music. A highly respected singer/songwriter/musician. I could hear her doing any one of Joni's early songs. Like, Roses Blue or Songs To Aging Children Come. Something with a bit of gravel and guts.Actually, I have only heard her play piano so maybe something like Rainy Night House or The Arrangement. I also forgot one of the best singers in popular music today - Katie Noonan. A voice to die for and a head on her shoulders. It would have to something jazzy since that seems to be her favourite genre (although, she has the voice to cope with any of Joni's vocal acrobatics). Her jazz cover of Elton John's, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was masterful. I could imagine the same treatment on Both Sides, Now. How about Jet performing, Ray's Dad's Cadilac? or Spiderbait doing Shiny Toys? Just a thought. Just a sampling of Judy's great compositions are Since You've Ask, Trust Your Heart, Secret Gardens, Houses, My Father, Born to the Breed, Shameless, Sanity and Grace, Song for Judith, Blizzard, to say nothing of the dozens of traditional songs she arranged and whose arrangements alone became standards. And remember, Judy introduced millions of listens to great songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Jacques Brel, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Stephen Sondheim, and Randy Newman. As for Joan Baez, if she had only written Song for David, an anthem for her generation, she would have earned the title songwriter. I asked my two sons, 27 and 29 years old, if they knew who Joni Mitchell is. (I asked them separately, on different occasions). They both looked at me as if I had said something stupid and answered: Of course, doesn't everybody? Now, I never played her music so my sons could hear - since I prefer to be on my own when I listen to Joni - so it's not a childhood memory, and I did not educate them on Joni. So I asked them if they know any songs she's written and they both mentioned Woodstock. My younger son thought she had been the main attraction at Woodstock and was surprised to learn she hadn't actually been there, and my older son is convinced that she was the hippie queen of the sixties. So, admittedly, they do not seem to know much about her later work but still - she's obviously part of the music history that somehow is passed on to the next generation (worldwide!). If that is not appreciation and acknowledgment, I don't know what is. And please observe that these are young men whose taste in music is very different from Joni's. In conclusion, if the business doesn't acknowledge her, the general public obviously does, and shouldn't that count for something? Have a nice weekend, Marion ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2007 11:30:26 -0500 From: "AJ" Subject: Re: RE : Re: Part of Joni's problem? now 'awk' - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Em" > lol, you know what? now I don't agree anymore...going through the list > of great songs Baez has written. As I said, I really really love "Diamonds and Rust," "Since You've Asked," and especially "Houses." I think both Collins and Baez have written good songs. However, when I think of them I think of them primarily as singers. Whereas Mitchell has produced this incredible body of first-rate and ever-evolving work for--what?--over forty years. For me the best analogy would be in poetry: I love several John Crowe Ransom poems, but his work is nowhere nearly as important as, say, the whole of Wallace Stevens's. But to say Stevens's is a much more important oeuvre doesn't in any way reduce my love and admiration for four or five of Ransom's poems. I guess the female songwriter I most respond to who is roughly in Mitchell's generation would be Ricki Lee Jones, particularly "Pirates" and the album that followed that one (I think it's called "The Swimmer," but I'm not sure; it has that song called "It Must Be Love" on it). But Jones's later albums have not seized me in the way those two did. Mitchell has continued to push boundaries, it seems to me, with every album (and not always to my taste). That is though one of the things that distinguishes an enduring important artist from a minor one (in any art). I mean, a line like "The priest sat in the airport bar / He was wearing his father's tie" is startling to find in a song on a 'popular' album. I just don't find anything near that depth in any of Collins' or Baez's work, or any songwriter for that matter (with the exception of Sondheim). Which is not say I don't love many other songwriters, Neil Young for one. Another example of someone who continues to make important music decade after decade. I'm not used to talking about this (much more accustomed to discussing poetry, fiction, painting, even jazz). So please forgive my clumsiness! It just occurred to me it was exactly 33 years ago that I first got into Mitchell in a major way, with "For the Roses" (I'd of course heard Collins cover of "Both Sides Now" and CSNY's "Woodstock," but FTR was my real introduction). Funny story: I have a friend who loves Mitchell. He was visiting from LA and I put on that CD of standards she did with the London Orchestra and ask him if he knew who it was (my friend is more musically knowledgable than the average bear). He had no idea. Only after a number of give-it-way hints did he finally come up with her name. - --AJ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2007 18:36:00 +0100 (CET) From: Joseph Palis Subject: non-Aussies I'd Like To Hear Cover Joni Songs Cassandra Wilson and Joni were once interviewed in the late 1990s in (was it?) Yet he said, "I'm not a *fan* of Joni Mitchell. Fan comes from the word "fanatic". I'm not fanatical; I have just the right amount of appreciation for her. I'm an *appreciator* of Joni Mitchell." As an appreciator, I hesitate to share your grief. It's your business. But you've given voice to so many mixed emotions through the years that I must tell you this: From a respectful distance, I feel your pain. Your mother brought a lot of light into this world. The rest of us will take it forward now. Sufian's cover is rather unique in his interpretation. I like it. I am having trouble with Bjorak's cover tho. Don't much care for it. Laura >Thank you Laura! I met a few last year in NYC but looking forward to hanging for a few days. Though I am strickly a lurker who very rarely has anything to say i'm impressed with the amount of knowledge that is shown. And Lori since you are the first person I've ever met off this list you hold a special place in my heart. Dang how long ago did we meet at Katz's deli? Was I sober? Dang how long ago did we > meet at Katz's deli? Was I sober? Aw, Craig -- back at ya. You were the first person I met from this list too. And then we met up with Neil O. I don't know if you were sober or not - -- but I know we drank some beers that night! And shared some of our Joni stuff (songbooks, special edition cds, etc). It still bums me out that the digital camera was on the wrong setting and didn't capture our images very well. Nonetheless, that evening has remained in my bank of fond memories. It was so great to meet people -- and men, at that! -- who dig Joni as much as I do. Btw, that was sometime between September 1997 and April 1998. Had to be during that time frame because I joined the list at the end of Aug 97, and I remember where I was living when I made that trip to Austin. I moved from that house in Apr 98. I wish I could be at Jonifest this year, but alas, I won't be ... so ... > I'm looking forward to the toast for Myrtle. Raise an extra glass for me, will you? Happy travels, and enjoy!
