I just find dreams so fascinating really. > Hi, Monika, That may have been me since I've had two Joni-related dreams and BOTH revolved around JoniFests. Joni was even IN one of them. I tend to have a lot of dreams (of course, it's said we all dream a lot but don't always remember them) and I usually remember quite a bit. I vaguely remember having dreams about other musicians but they haven't stuck in my memory like the Joni/Jonifest ones. The weird thing is how REAL some dreams seem, to the point where I've woken up and believed what happened in the dream actually took place. More than once, I've dreamed about finding the first car I owned again (1950 Merc convert), after so many years, and buying it back. When I've woken up after a couple of those, I actually thought it was parked in my garage until reality set in. What a BUMMER! In fact, according to Joni, it was just the opposite. Joni always wanted to record an album of covers but was contractually prevented. To add to this, Mark, in the CBC radio documentary that came out in late January, Joni confided that the opportunity to make BSN was in fact a parting gift offered to her by a record company - I forget which one. They made it happen and shelled out the bucks for it. Someone on this list probably knows the details. In any event - what a cool present to offer a musician. Making BSN and getting to sing standards, work with an arranger and a full ochestra, in London, was clearly a milestone in Joni's carreer. Michael in Quebec PS. While I am a Sufjan fan, I don't get his FMIP cover. Not even remotely like the original. Same words, new melody and tempo. Hardly a cover, imo. It's an entirely new creation. _________________________________________________________________ Have Some Fun Out Of The Sun This March Break http://local.live.com/?mkt=en-ca/?v=2&cid=A6D6BDB4586E357F!142 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2007 20:56:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Brian Gross Subject: re: Joni's mama El Moley Rachamim Oh G-d, full of compassion, Thou who dwellest on high. I was always struck by her vague resemblance to the Queen of England - always wondered if I was the only one who thought about that. As far as the new songs go and Joni playing the sax, Bob's got it right - there's no WAY she's got the lung power for that. I thought it was interesting the way they talked about it only fleetingly, sort of masking the truth that she's programming a digitally synthesized horn section. The arrangement is still her art, but the physical musicianship is not, which is why I bristled in my initial comment about pro-tools. Not to rail on and on - but digital technology is both a blessing and a curse. As a music critic (and I know, I'm often perceived as the enemy, paid for making trite comments, etc) SOOOOO much crap comes across my desk, and digital recording has made a lot of it possible. Now anybody can make a record and they have the engineering tools laid out for them to make it actually sound like something halfway decent even if they're way low on talent. It's amazing. And maddening. But nfor some artists it means the difference of making another disc or not. To make albums the old fashioned way with tape is maybe $150,000. To make a decent sounding digitally recorded disc is more like $5000. But there are ways of using digital well and ways of using it badly. Anybody hear that latest Diana Ross monstrosity? Part of what's so horrible about it is that she seems completely detached from the arrangements, which sound as if they could've come from an 80's model Casio toy. It's as if the tracks were programmed elsewhere, emailed to her, and then she set up a microphone in her bedroom and listlessly croaked out some air until the space was all filled. Her voice is artificially thickened (I know - this is standard procedure at this point, but it's particularly obvious on Ross' disc), the drums are fake and tinny sounding, and on..So, when I heard that tell-tale synthesized drum sound schlepping around in the background of "Shine" I got a shiver. But these may not be finished and mastered tracks, which is what I'm hoping. On the other hand, Ghost spoke as if she'd heard the whole CD, so maybe it's done already (too fast, don't'cha think?) I've sort of known in the back of my mind that Joni was working digitally at home and that this disc was, to some extent, going to be a homemade affair. But if she doesn't bring in some other musicians to flesh the tracks out and relies on what instruments she can simulate herself (which is just about anything), "Shine" may be a real bummer. I was hoping she'd go after working with the band that toured with her in '98 to add some jazzy touches. It's not that I don't have faith in Joni. But even "the masters" can use a second opinion. It's hard (read: nearly impossible) to be objective about your own work - that why artists get critiqued. As far as Joni dreams go, I have a few every year myself. One had to do with bumping into her in a shopping area in Bel Air (particularly laughable since, now that I've been there and photographed myself standing in front of her gate, I know full well that there isn't any shopping area in Bel Air - but the dream predates my 1994 pilgrimage to chez Joni). We just started talking and ended up going back to her place and having dinner - we hit it off. Another more recent one was much darker. She was going to cook me dinner (again), only this time we weren't getting along so well. She was upset because I wouldn't drink wine with her (I stopped drinking a number of years ago) and thought I was being silly about avoiding alcohol. In that dream, Joni is obviously just a stand-in for someone else.strange the way the mind works sometimes. There's been another recurring one about how every time Joni comes to Boston (which never actually happens) I have access to her somehow - it's unclear how in the dream. But we always hook up and spend some time.the details aren't very specific. While we're on the topic (I'm on a roll now and avoiding writing a CD rev'w I don't feel like tending to - this is much more fun at the moment) - I still have this damn dream about these ultra-rare Carole King albums that don't exist. In the dream I'm constantly combing through used shops in search of these elusive items, the covers of which are odd variances on one's that actually exist. It's as if in between The City's "Now That Everything's Been Said" and the "Writer" disc she made maybe three other records (which is, of course, not the case). Somebody once told me it's called a 'frustration dream.' Maybe I'm just bummed that CK's Ode Years are so finite and the rest of her output has been so shoddy - so I'm dreaming there's more of it to be unearthed. Thanks for reading, Chris in Boston ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2007 16:16:43 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Re: Come In From The Cold: The Return of Joni Mitchell For those who didn't get to hear the show or can't stream it, I think this turned out to be a pretty good recording. I only missed the first 3 or 4 words of Amanda's introduction. WireTap records in AIFF uncompressed format and then I converted it to a fairly high bitrate mp3. The file is about 79Mb. Download it here: http://download.yousendit.com/1D68F98A7A4ACB93 Although I was disappointed by the shortness of the sound clips from the new album, it sounds like it will be a nice album. I like the imagery that Joni describes for the song, "Shine" - viewing the earth from above. It seems there are some positive thoughts on this album too. Mark in Sydney PS Can anyone offer me a job? I have been unemployed for two months now. It's a long shot but, I thought I'd ask anyway. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2007 #87 ******************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
