["mia _" Subject: Re: Retro Joni Covers, Lucky #13 Thanks once again, Bob for the retro covers. A mixed bag as usual. Some gems and some stinkers. How appropriate for Bette Midler is Twisted? The speedy wordiness of it is perfect for her burlesque style. Chaka Khan's version of Man From Mars is a gem too. Very bluesy. My two favourites would have to be Chinese Cafi by David Hay and This Flight Tonight by E-Clypse - the best cover of that song by far and the first version that isn't a 70s glam rock version. Thanks also to Laura for sharing this preview of the upcoming tribute album. Interesting interpretation of the song. Quite unique. Sufjan definitely makes the song his own. Great. Does anyone have the tracklist handy? I loved Bjork's Boho Dance. I'm terribly curious about Dreamland on this album. I really love the version that Joni and the band do at the end of PWWAM, although, if i remember correctly, it's not the full version. I heard it first on S&L and lvoed it. It was one of the first things that i LOVED on DJRD. FTR by Cassandra could be great. I really like Annie's LOTC and Sarah's Blue. I can never decide if i like JT. SOmetimes i think he is really awful, dull, lifeless. GARRET On 3/18/07, Bob Muller wrote: > > > tracklist handy? > > > 1. FREE MAN IN PARIS - Sufjan Stevens > 2. My only gripe was Peggy Lee not in the top 50, but Patty Griffin being there was enough to ease the pain. heh heh And Paz!!! Oh Paz, if only the weather wasn't so crappy (it's a blizzard here for the past 3 days!), I would drive the 3 hours to see you. When are you coming to Vermont? In other news: The Sufjan Stevens cover is quite the cover. I LOVE IT!!! I just heard about him in my Music Theory class last semester and apparently he has an entire album of songs named after cities. I guess he could've used this one then. I agree that it's very heavy on the Sgt. Pepper influence, but I love it. BTW: For anyone looking for some other bands that have a big Beatles influence and also like Queen and the Beach Boys, check out Jellyfish. One of my top ten fave bands. They came out in the late 80's, early 90's and then broke up, but Jason Falkner, Jon Brion, they were all part of the band at some point. Super fun. Also, I really was serious about there being a Jonifest twice a year. I unfortunately go to school during the time of the usual Jonifest and one of these years I'd really love to attend and even perform. Is there anyone else out there that would be interested in maybe seeing if this could happen? There was a slight panic earlier today when the GSU police wouldn't let us in the building even though we had a scheduled performance and were supposed to have already been given access...oh beaurocracy, usually much more a pain in the ass than anything useful and productive. But once we convinced them we were supposed to be there (I think one of my professors had to email the police captain and sign his life away because the dork who owns the theatre never notified the police we would be there...but it is now no more than an unpleasant memory and everything is fine. Looking forward to the next performance...the first felt more like warmup. It's kind of sad that it will be all over but a such a great experience...nothing like singing on the stage under a spotlight.
