Grabster" Subject: Re: J rejects feminism I think many people want to reject labels, as they carry a lot of cultural baggage and lend themselves to stereotyping. So, "feminism" has become some sort of charged code word that causes people who might otherwise agree to choose up sides. It means different things to different people. It's limiting. That being said, if anyone here wants to burn their bra, that's ok with me too. Especially if I get to watch. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2007 00:40:19 -0700 From: Subject: Joni Tours, Ltd. Patti P. suggested: "Someone should start a jmdl California tour business. You know how they do the tours of Holllywood and the homes of the stars?" Heh heh - don't tell anyone but we've been running the Joni tours here since inception ;-) We have short, medium and full circle tours of the haunts and landmarks available. Incredibly, I can count at least 25 jmdlers past and present who have slept on my couch. (Now I have two couches but always put people on the "jmdl" couch). "To quote Mahatma Gandhi, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Joni is simply living it, being it. But I suppose that's the beauty of the modern conception of feminism. Essentially, I am biologically female and I can choose to do what I want. I acceled in math and science in school but when I got to college I stopped taking math and science because I was more interested in literature, music and religion. As a kid, I did, in fact, feel compelled to outshine the boys in the "traditionally masculine" fields. As an adult, I don't really care. I like flowers, I don't like perfume. I like decorating, I don't like cooking. I don't like action movies, I don't like romantic comedies, I like dramas and character-driven stories. I think Holden Caulfield is an immature brat and I hate Jane Austen. Perhaps in the past it was necessary to be more militant, but thanks to the efforts of centuries of women before me, I now have the right to determine what I want to do in life. I think Joni has always felt that way, even when it wasn't really accepted. - - Kira

Given the rather extreme problems of the source (early 60's panning -dated by 1968 even- , harsh guitar tones, distorted vocal phrases, tape hiss and excessive chamber reverb along with withered tape stock before the source CD was originally transferred) there are still some unfixable problems but Jerry and I believe they have improved considerably. I had to resort to some pretty bizarre methods to get there but the results are here now for you to hear. I have encoded the files as highest bit rate mp3s instead of the AAC files I prefer as it appears many of you don't use iTunes, so there should be universal translation to your computer setup. From there you can burn a CD. As before, you must already own the CD before downloading; although I can't verify this I'm doing the honor system this time. Let me know if the revised sound works for you. thanks, Dave http://www.yousendit.com/download/T2dmV0o2U1BRYTgwTVE9PQ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2007 18:16:32 +0100 From: "Marion Leffler" Subject: Re: J does not reject feminism SJC I agree with Jerry, feminism is about having a choice and, I would add, making it consciously. So it's okay to be a homemaker (of your own free will) just as long as you also are away of the setbacks that still come with it - like economic dependency (which you might not notice until your partner dies or you get a divorce or once you retire and have to get by on old-age pension ..). Kate: As for Joni being a homemaker - well, she does have a housekeeper...If she bakes pies and cooks and so on, she does it for pleasure, not out of neccesity or because other people have assigned her that task. I am very, very tired of comments on feminism meaning a hatred of men. There is no conflict in being a feminist and loving men! Conflict occurs when people who don't subscribe to the idea of equal rights and opportunities for men and women or who do not want to admit that equal rights for men and women still do not exist to this day try to out feminism by claiming that it means a hatred of men. I don't think it's a good argument saying you don't want to be labeled a feminist because it's critics have badmouthed it...if that really is why Joni seems to reject it. If on the other hand she simply rejects to be labelled at all - well, I'm a bit sceptical to the notion that we are completely free to choose our identities, I think it's more a question of accepting some and rejecting others within certain, limited ranges (more limited for some people than for others, so Joni's range is larger than most of ours. Still, she probably does have an image of herself that is not entirely her own device). But okay, that's probably an entirely different discussion. Thanks for letting me have my say. Mitchell's "Shine" is the first album of new material in a decade, and also features the singer's setting of Kipling's poem "If." The world exclusive preview of the songs will take place over the next two weekends, as part of a two-part documentary based around an in-depth "conversation" between Mitchell and British singer-songwriter Amanda Ghost. The radio series "Come In From The Cold: The Return Of Joni Mitchell" sees Mitchell explain the reasons behind her change of mind about recording music again. Mitchell's last album of new material "Taming The Tiger" appeared in 1998 prior to the announcement of her retirement from music in 2002. The new album comes as part of a busy period of renewed activity and interest for Mitchell - "Dancing Joni", a collaboration between the singer-songwriter and Alberta Ballet opened in Canada last month and next month sees the release of "A Tribute to Joni Mitchell", a collection of her songs reinterpreted by the likes of Bjork, Annie Lennox, Prince, kd lang, James Taylor, Elvis Costello and Emmylou Harris. Come In From The Cold: The Return Of Joni Mitchell will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on March 20 and 27 at 8.30pm. "Shine" is expected to be released in the Autumn. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2007 16:10:12 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: New Joni Mitchell songs are to be aired exclusively on BBC Radio 2 Very cool news - and I'm actually very happy to see the Euros getting a scoop for a change - seems like North America has gotten their fair share recently. If Hilary Duff doing My Generation isn't bad enough, even worse, she changes the infamous lyric in that song to "hope I don't die before I get old." Come on man! And Behind Blue Eyes by Limp Bizkit is one of the worst covers I have ever heard in my life as well. If you're going to cover that song, you need someone who can actually sing not just grunt and groan. I hate Fred Durst. Plus they leave out the sped up part and add some other nonsense to the song---not to mention additional lyrics. No! And is Big Yellow Taxi done by the Couting Crows really, really bad? I'm sort of interested in hearing it now but at the same time not if it gets totally butchered. Plus I don't like the Counting Crows anyway. But if we're talking the Black Crowes, I can stand them.
