Azeem, please let us know if you haven't already. I have always had my take on why and it did not have to do with her smoking. It's somewhat trivial but I am interested in what was said. me: sorry if this has been responded to already. i'm on digest too but here goes. question: on your last recordings your voice had lost a lot of its range joni: l had lost some of my voice. it was severe. i'd go to hit a note and there was nothing there. i used to have three octaves and people blamed it on my smoking. i went to a throat specialist who assured me it wasn't and said it had to do with my digestion partially. i also had nodes from singing rock and roll. i went to do this lecture on how to instal a love of nature on earth day in san francisco to the commonwealth club - which is one of those groups of very wealthy people who buy presidents, the power behind the throne. i was a bit nervous as what i was going to say was going to be more than slightly unorthodox, critical of the western mind in general and pyshology in particular. they sent me a masseuse, who turned out also to be a chiropractor, as a gift. after she worked on me she said "are you having trouble singing? No wonder, you're lanynx is compressed." she gave me a styrofoam block to realign my spine that had been damaged from polio and as it had gotten worse my neck was pokey. i'd had it straightened out by a chinese healer who had regenerated my back so the nerves came back to life. neil young, who caught polio etc etc. he went the western way and..metal pole...thousands of dollars blah blah...bad idea as this chinese guy regenerates the nerves in my back for 200 dollars. he gave me some exercises to maintain my joints, i have been doing them for a couple of years which put my shoulders back. one shoulder was out from playing acoustic guitar - it took me about two years to stop it rubbing the socket. as everything went back some of my high end came back. i am singing well on this album. certainly better than on the last two. people always like to blame it on my smoking. i have smoked since was nine so it obviously didn't affect the early work that much. my voice isn't completely back as my sinuses are screwed up. maybe that is from smoking./... or the LA air. i have progressed as a singer, my stroke is better, my phrasing is better. i have learned a lot. i am closer to the singers i really love. i never imagined i'd be able to sing like edith piaf. leslondon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2007 19:45:14 +1100 From: Mark-Leon Thorne Subject: Joni in Oz Hi all. Not only is it a fascinating account of the problems she's had with the voice, but it's also one of the few sections of the interview where she isn't mithering or blowing her own trumpet. The reason I don't want to quote is because it would by definition be quoting out of context; also, it wasn't any single example that bugged me, more the accumulation of whining. As one of the lucky people to have met Joni in person, I'll always remember how gracious she was, to offset the impression this new interview gives of an embittered old grouch. I do think she's getting lost in this world of hers, and seems to have lost sight of one possible reason that her later work hasn't been that successful. She blames the critics for not supporting it and the record companies for not promoting it, and journalists for misquoting and pigeonholing her; she might point the finger at herself for inflicting sludge like Dancing Clown, Reoccurring Dream, the Windfall and Number One (and I fear there are others...) on us - these are not just crummy songs by her previously stratospheric standards, they're crummy by any standards. The danger of this new record is that she's proclaiming it as (and fair enough, this is my spin on it) "Joni Mitchell descends from her lofty perch to sort out the problems of the world" - that's a lot to live up to! Les, did you have anything like the reaction to this interview that I did? Or anyone else who's read it? Before she went electric, she would have several of them onstage in different tunings. Before that, she would retune! I think I have seen her playing a Gibson acoustic (maybe?) in an old picture, and her first instrument was a Martin ukelele. And there are photos of her with a Strat-but her main electric in the Shadows & Light era was the hollowbody Ibanez George Benson model, again she had 3 or 4 (?). A couple of them had come up for sale a few years back, and someone on the list got one and brought it to Jonifest-forgive me for forgetting names, I wasn't there-but people got to play & admire it. Joni claims to have been given one of the first phase shifters, and says that Jaco immediately took it from her! Or maybe it was a Roland stereo amp with phase built in, in any case, I suppose she got another, and used it to thicken up her sound. After the Ibanez came the Parker Fly and the G-8 (right?) Roland system that allows virtual tuning- that is, hit a footswitch, change the tuning without ever touching the strings. This synth/modeling system is what you hear on Taming the Tiger, was introduced to her by Graham Nash, and again members of this list own this system and it's predecessor and have Jonifested with it. Joni went to the Parker Fly electric because it's a super lightweight model, under 5 lbs, and she was having back pain from the heavier guitars. A "Joni Gear" database would be nice. Besides guitars, there is the JoEllen dulcimer, Fender Rhodes piano on Woodstock, Farfisa, Fairlight keyboards, AYKTMBM... Well, I might be repeating my own rumour, here, but I think I got it from the Roland User's Group magazine, which had a cover story on Joni back in '97. Nash had a prototype at his house and realized it would be perfect for her. She started using the VG-8 with a Strat before getting the Parker (from Walecki?). Correction to my earlier post-I think it was the Stereo Chorus that she recieved (and Jaco borrowed), not a phaser as those had been around for some time. Extracurricular activity: Listen to the song "Tiger Bones" from TTT- the VG-8 in action, with the 3 bass strings in the left channel, and the 3 treble strings on the right, and some excellent pickin'.
