I had just been saying that yeah, TLog is not really my thing, when my player suddenly picked a TLog song for me, and I thought NO! There are songs on this album that have moved me immensely! Although I am a declared BSN lover, BSN tends to surprise me again each time I haven't heard it for a while. It's her singing, first of all. I am not that fond of big bands, but my friend who is a drummer once said that the harmony between her and the orchestra is perfect. His music is everything but zaccharine, so I took note of it. Today I listened again, and I think the way the orchestra supports her and comments on her singing and carries one the emotion when she is not singing is in fact quite extraordinary. I'm in a bit of a state today from listening to it again so I could say much more, but enough from me! I am glad you like it too! Such different experiences we are having! Lately when I've gone to my stack of Joni CDs here in my home office, I've eschewed BSN, saying to myself, though I adore that CD, that if I'm only listening to one JM CD today, let it be one with her own songs. Then the other day I let myself put on BSN and oh my god, the pleasure it gave me... she has done a masterful job here, I think, of making these songs her own and making me love them. The orchestration, which you find saccharine, I find very "Joni" and her voice, which you hear as a caricature of her former voice (if I've understood you), I find incredibly beautiful and natural on this CD. It's not her bell-like young-woman's voice, but it's a beautiful voice just the same, so full of emotion, strength and depth. I'm sorry you aren't hearing what I am. Every time I really listen to the CD, I'm more astounded and fall more in love with it... the whole package. I hope some day you will take pleasure from it. Heaven knows some of Joni's CDs have taken lots of time to grow on me. It's the matter-of-fact-ness and plainness of the way they state things, without being bland or disinterested, or shallow. There is also an ambiguity, although I'm not sure that's the right way to put it, in the way she interprets some of the songs that I find intriguing. I was listening to You're my Thrill, there are such mixed emotions on it, infatuation and sadness at the same time. The same thing with BSN: does she really know life now, or doesn't she? Incidentally, my friend gave me a Ella&Louis CD and I listened to it yesterday. I don't want to trash Ella Fitzgerald at all, but listening to her sing Comes Love, I'd so much rather hear Joni sing it. Sarah Vaughn appeals more to me than Ella, too. Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2007 07:18:09 +0100 (CET) From: Joseph Palis Subject: RE : Billie Holiday and latter-era singers SJC I like Billie too. Her voice and storytelling skills especially in the late 1950s eclipse the bouyancy of her performances when she was more youthful. But I am sure that's just me since I know a lot of people who gravitated to her era with Teddy Wilson in the late 1930s. Joni's voice in BSN does bear comparison to latter-era Billie. Especially when one realizes that their youthful voices were more agile then and more flexible and able to change dynamics with ease. I like Joni's BSN period and although Vince Mendoza may not be in the same league as Ray Ellis (especially in Billie's "Last Recording" album), the BSN string arrangements which sometimes tend to overwhelm Joni's vocals, sound good to my ears. Maybe it is hearing Joni sing standards from the American popular song, or maybe I like to hear the mature voices of singers (excepting the last recordings of Anita O' Day, Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne), but BSN works for me big time. There is a timelessness to the whole proceedings that may appeal to music listeners of the future generation. The way Joni simply sings "You've changed" with an abruptness as though stating and accepting a cruel fact, kills me every time. There was no prolongation of notes for faux pathos. Matter-of-fact even. Like wisdom from years of life experiences. Someone mentioned Blossom Dearie earlier and I too love this woman. Her voice bears the insouciant girlishness of her recordings with Ray Brown in the 50s. I wish I could see her in Danny Skylight too before it's too late. It is as though I know this woman from years of listening to her recordings. I always remember her definitive versions of "Tout doucement" and "Manhattan" but then maybe that's because I am a fan of hers. There have been singers that I always wanted to see perform live. Like Abbey Lincoln, Sheila Jordan. Or Cleo Laine. Maybe Ernestine Anderson. Women whose musicianship remains undiminished with the passing years. Or at least as their recorded outputs reveal. I just wish I won't be as disappointed as when I saw and heard (Little) Jimmy Scott perform a song in Carnegie Hall that honored Joni. It is developed primarily by Jacek Sieka. As of 2005, no official statistics exist to verify the proportion of DirectConnect users using DC++. However, it is generally believed to be the most extensively used by a large margin; administrators of popular public DirectConnect hubs generally agree [citation needed] that DC++ is the client used by a significant majority. DC++ is an open-source alternative to the original client, NeoModus Direct Connect (NMDC); it connects to the same file-sharing network and supports the same file-sharing protocol. One of the reasons commonly attributed to the aforementioned popularity of DC++ is that it has no adware of any kind, unlike NMDC [1]. Many other clients exist for the Direct Connect network, and most of these are DC++ "mods": modified versions of DC++, based on DC++'s source code. A partial list of DC++ mods is given below. Some of these clients were developed for specialized communities (e.g. music- sharing communities), or in order to support specific experimental features, or perhaps features that have been rejected from inclusion in DC++ itself. An example of an experimental feature is hashing, which was initially implemented in BCDC++ and later adopted by DC++. As of 2002, DC++ was still not accepted into some hubs because the number of slots is shared by all the hubs that the client is connected to. When the DC++ tag was added to the client, a hack was to remove the tag in an attempt to mask the identity of the client. I was going to add a link directly to the tabs and tunings site, but encountered an error at jmdl.com just now, that I'm sure will be fixed soon. In any case, it's not hard to find. Just about every Joni song has been figured out the guitar wizards of figuring-things-out. It does become kind of addictive. I took piano lessons for over two years and I've only dabbled in trying to learn to play guitar (arthritis challenged) but I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing you (and everyone else) play. Several comments: Some people WANT artists to remain static & predictable - I'm guilty of this myself sometimes. (Really, I don't mind as an artist changes, as long as the changes don't suck) By the same token, some artists are content to stay static and predictable over time - nothing wrong with that. James Taylor has had a wonderful and succesful career, thank you very much. There's always a disconnect between art & commerce - Joni has talked about this at length. Fortunately, she had such commercial success at the beginning of her career (and certainly not at the expense of her art) that she was able to pursue where her muse took her. Unfortunately, as she continued on the artistic path she left the commercial path behind, much to the chagrin of many fans, critics and record companies. The thing that bothers/puzzles me is that Joni seems to be so angry that she didn't continue with her commercial successes. It seems to me that other artists that I lump in with her (Dylan, Waits) in terms of their duration in the business just seem satisfied to be doing their work and don't really seem to care what happens with it commercially. Maybe I just pay more attention to everything that Joni says. It's almost as if Joni continually strives for that affirmation, and I'm not sure why. Maybe in her case, her visual art fills that role and she's more emotionally needy about her music. Though you would think it the other way 'round as she describes herself as a painter first & foremost.
