Lots of fabulous people and great music (you may be amazed at the talent amongst the Joni fans). Plenty of gay people but it's never really been an issue, unless someone just plain doesn't want to be with gay people. Are they "out"? Well, I laughed that some of the girls called one of the buildings they stayed in, the "Lez Cottage" so I'd say they're "out". Straight or gay, still great people IMHO... On the front cover of (Long Island's) Newsday, Part 2, is a photo of an old barn here on LI (by someone I know in the Huntington CC, no less) and the lead-in under it: "They may have paved paradise, but the Heckscher Museum Of Art looks past the parking lot to a time now lost", and- of course- it's all about preserving the island's past history, etc. That's it... no big deal... Unfortunate for you (of course), but a true testament to the enduring brilliance of the disc itself. Oh, and I DO hope it's the full-length "HDCD"/remastered edition, because--being a "live" recording--the earlier version cut out bits of dialogue and between-song patter due to limited time restraints when first reproduced on CD in the late '80's (note: it was originally a double-LP when first produced on vinyl in 1974). (Tickets are still available, at the door or Ticketmaster.) Integrity: "That I should have such strength and courage (as an artist) when I'm 63," he says. "Joni didn't go with her popular songs. The ballet is antiwar, pro-environment. In Alberta." Humility: "In making the ballet, Joni was always asking, 'Is this right' or, 'Have we got it?' I've never seen anybody so polite to waiters." Sleeping: "Joni's a night owl. She sleeps from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m." Cheerfulness: "She's a laugher, a giggler." Cafe habits: "She's the only person I've seen that orders an orange juice, two cappuccinos and a glass of red wine at the same time." Smoking: "I used to be a half-pack a day person. Around Joni ... my smoking has doubled." Commitment: Once she agreed to work with Grand-Maitre on the ballet, Joni never looked back. She designed the sets, wrote new songs for the ballet, came to Calgary weeks before its premiere for final rehearsals, and is still in Calgary, editing the TV special. "She's had dances set to her music, but this was the first time she'd collaborated with the dance itself." Satisfaction: "Joni is very happy with the ballet." Any further collaboration? "Joni says she wants to talk." - ----------------------------------------------------------- Politicians and diapers both need to be changed often. Anyway, back in the day, you could pay "up front" and reserve tickets for concerts--something along the lines of "the next time Joni tours, I've got dibs." So my high school friends and I had tickets reserved for at least four years. When my friends (whom I had lost touch with) called my family home to let me know that the S&L concert was on and we had tickets, my mom "forgot" to pass the message along to me. Needless to say, I didn't get to go. (Now, there's a "mother forgiveness challenge" if I've ever heard one...) Finally, I did get to see Joni in '83 at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater (CA) and sat second row center. I think I cried through the entire concert, and then at the end threatened to punch out the two women sitting behind me who where criticizing her for playing new material. You know, the old "Paint A Starry Night again, man" types. Fortunately, I regained control of myself at the last minute and simply told them, in the most acerbic voice I could muster, that it was too bad they were brain-dead, but that I still thought they were "very interesting people." It's possible that I'd had one too many glasses of Chardonnay. Just a little personal Joni history for y'all, and, as always, more than you'd ever want to know. What can I say. I'm a giver. To think that this woman's music has been a central part of my life for so many years and yet I really had no idea who she really is! I had never even actually seen her perform.(She hasn't been much on tv in Europe and unfortunately I did not get to go to her concerts in England in 1970). Of course I do realise that these dvds do not tell the whole story, in fact they tell us what she wants us to know - but that's plenty! And there was nothing at all there that I did not like. I feel that Joni is a woman that I would have been happy to know in "real" life, and I enjoy her music even more now. So I think I understand what you are saying - listen to her music as if a friend tells you something that you recognize and can relate to without envading her privacy. Have a really nice weekend! MJC (mostly joni content) So, it's been a year, but oh what a year it's been. About a year ago I promised some beautiful people I would post a review of the Tribute Concert and I didn't want to not do it, even if it is a year old. Better late than never right? Joanne Shenandoah performs "The Dawntreader" - -This was ok. I can imagine that being the first performer at Carnegie Hall for an amazing artist is incredibly daunting. I found myself wanting to hear her own stuff however, instead of trying to sing a Joni tune. Dar Williams performs "Rainy Nighthouse" - -This was beautiful. I am not super familiar with the song, or Dar Williams for that matter, but thought she put forth quite an impressive effort. eels perform "All I Want" - -Oh, Liv Tyler's husband was such a rocker!! heh (total sarcasm) I actually own an eels album and like it. But this was just a strange pairing in my opinion. Tom Rush performs "The Urge For Going" - -Loved this. How can you not like someone who's delivery is as natural as Tom Rush's? I used to listen to this song and couldn't even think of it as anything but a woman talking of a man. He changed that for me. It was pared down and perfect. Laurie Anderson performs "Both Sides Now" - -There are people who love her. I mean LOVE her. Like my teacher. But this performance for me was awful. I thought it was just so off the wall. I didn't like the little voice, the strange instrumentation, I would've rather seen someone else in this space. Plus, this is the first BSN, and the second one blows it away so much, that I don't know what the hell they were thinking. Me'shell NdegeOcello performs "Cherokee Louise" - -I really like her. She seemed to be kind of rude however, with her back to the audience for most of the performance. I can see that the mixer at the monitor board wasn't very good (i dabble in sound production at school), so I can understand all the direction she was giving in the middle of the song, but as a performer myself, at some point you just have to let go of all the technical stuff and just go for it. Get into the song, comfortable with it, make it yours. She didn't. Martin Sexton performs "Marcie" - -This was awesome. What a tone, and delivery! I wanted to go pick up some of his cd's right after. I would love to hear this one again. The Wood Brothers perform "Black Crow" - -Amazing. I thought this was one of the highlights of the night. I guess it's sort of hard to make this song sound like shit though. Richard Thompson's singing in the TNT tribute came close, but the music helped. Here, everything was just right and you could see the musicianship between the two brothers, not to mention the way they just meshed so well. They've also obviously got a lot of respect for Joni and treated her song like the jewel it is. Suzanne Vega performs "Amelia" from Heijira (1976) - -This was bittersweet for me. I adore Suzanne, but this was one of the most lackluster performances ever. I know the content is supposed to be contemplative, and that she's not exactly the most rambunctious person, but God woman! Give SOME life to the song. I can only chock up her major hesitations to trying to keep time with the guitarist, who was having some issues, but like I said before....(see Meshelle, above). Pharoah's Daughter perform "God Must Be A Boogie Man" - -The only performance off of Mingus (which by the way, this album and HOSL, and Hejira were grossly overlooked) I thought this was ok. I'm picky. Jesse Malin performs "Carey" - -Now this was a f*ckin' rockstar!! His rocker rendition of Carey injected some life into the Tribute. I think he may have scared some people, but I loved it. Michelle Williams performs "Help Me" - -Eh. I love R&B, I love Destiny's Child (ok..stop laughing), but she didn't seem like she really felt the song. Only that she was doing some tribute and "updating" the song. I think there was another song she could've done better at. Amy Grant performs "Big Yellow Taxi" - -Cute. Marc Cohn with special guest Don Byron performs "For Free" - -I can't really remember this one. I guess it wasn't that memorable. Landmark-Coalition Jazz Program of Midori and Friends with Tom Rush performs "The Circle Game" - -Again, Tom Rush delivers. This time with young children that were the youth part of Music For Youth. Which was perfect given the subject matter. I am actually learning this on piano as we speak. Beautiful in it's simplicity, which is not a Joni thing. She's complex and I love her for it. I guess that's Tom's thing. Simple, beautiful. Good. Assembly of Dust with Sonya Kitchell perform "Trouble Child" - -So, here we are about to witness the Golden Child. Before going to the show, I looked Sonya Kitchell up on the internet and the same things kept coming up about how amazing she was and mature beyond her years. They were not wrong. She was great for a 16 year old. But she still needs some more work before she ever tries to tackle Joni again. Thought the song choice was cute too. Neil Sedaka performs "Raised on Robbery" - -Never thought I would see him live. Glad I did, don't need to again. He was good, just not my cup of coffee. Jimmy Scott performs "At Last" - -Kind of sad. The man was so old and had the voice of a 12 year old. I'm sure in his day he was one of the best, but to me, he needed to stop performing in public. He looked too fragile for the stage. A little strange too, because in a Tribute to Joni, they do a song that she didn't even write. Why? She's got mountains of songs that could've been done instead. Shawn Colvin performs "Turbulent Indigo" - -I find Shawn Colvin wonderful. This was nothing less than. Bettye LaVette performs "Last Chance Lost" - -Oh. My. God. This woman is ridiculous!! I hate to but gotta say it: she may have outdone Joni on this one. I'll have to give Joni's a couple more listens to be sure, but I FELT Bettye. She was pouring her freaking heart out! And her guitarist was doing it up too. Nellie McKay performs "Chelsea Morning" - -Eh. Part deux. Not into her. Did she even know the song? Cowboy Junkies perform "River" - -Margo Timmins made this song sultry, whereas most people make it full of longing. I like this version. Richie Havens performs "Woodstock" - -Without a doubt, the highlight of the night for me. Easily the best cover of Woodstock I've ever heard, or probably will hear. Judy Collins performs "Both Sides Now" - -That hair!! Still beautiful, still clear-as-a-bell soprano, Judy Collins showed why she's the one mainstreamers think about when they hear the title. Made even more poignant by the fact that now she's actually old enough for the material to sound heartfelt. Not that she didn't before, but I didn't like her version before this performance. Now, I can listen to it, but still would rather listen to Joni anytime. So there ya have it. Afterwards, I had the best time with the amazing people of the JMDL. Singing into the late hours, wishing I didn't have to leave. I would kill to be able to attend Jonifest, but alas, have school. I am in another couple of shows here again too: The Vagina Monologues ("My Angry Vagina") and Cabaret. I play Fraulein Schneider for those of you familiar with the play and not just the movie. There should be a Jonifest in the summer for those of us who can't make it in the spring. Whaddya say? Also, so excited for Joni's new album that I could plotz! And the upcoming Tribute album.
