Some exceptional moments of note: her wordless coda on the opening track (a somewhat slower version of "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio"); the soaring interjection right after "...I sing soprano in the upstairs choir...AH-ahhhhhhhhhhhhh" (on "Rainy Night House"); the most gorgeous version EVER of "A Case of You." It's a breathtaking vocal performance throughout. Beyond 'Miles of Aisles,' you'll find the exact same stunning sound on her duet (or duel--LOL) w/Joan Baez on the song "Dida" (featured on Baez' 1975 disc, 'Diamonds and Rust'). Enjoy !!! I can't analyze it from a guitarist's perspective because I'm not one. I just love the sound of it. The other one that sticks out in my mind is her treatment of "Woodstock" on the live Shadows & Light album. The rhythmic choppiness of it, especially at the end of it, just sends me. For the most part, Joni's guitar seems to play a supporting role. Vocally, her singing on "Sweet Sucker Dance" is simply amazing - she sings with total accuracy through some strange intervals with very little instrumental cueing to give her the notes or pitch. Her singing on all of Mingus is amazing but that one just blows me away. Ditto with her vocals on "Cotton Avenue", the dream-like way she sings "you just go no place...speciaaaallllll" is a perfect intro to the song. Her guitar accompaniment on that is remarkable as well. Songwriting is part of it for sure but i think a big reason so many people love this album is the way she sings, conveying so much depth and emotion. In many cases, the voice is the gateway into a song. Lately, I've found I tend to listen mostly Hejira, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, Wild Things Run Fast and I think the way she sings in this period is a big reason for that. RR ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Feb 2007 20:05:05 +0000 From: "c Karma" Subject: OUT OF CONTEXT Here we go again. Why do reporters find it so easy to paint Joni as humorless and imperious? She has gone on record saying so many good things about the original yet we are already seeing jabs at her rewrite of "If": "The project also boasts two new Mitchell recordings, the first publically heard since 1998. These include a ballad for the earth set to a slow rumba beat, called If I Had A Heart I'd Cry. Then there's If, featuring jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, which is a reworking of a Rudyard Kipling poem. "I changed the ending verse and I took out the archaic language," Mitchell told the Herald. "I personalized it." When asked if she thought Kipling would mind, Mitchell told another reporter: "Oh no! I've made it better!" "If (2007) - - This new song reworks (or, according to Mitchell, improves upon) Rudyard Kipling's poem with backing from jazz pianist Herbie Hancock." I would suggest that Mitchell had as much trademark self-effacement as pride when she told the reporter that she had "improved" Kipling's poem. The reporters seem to want to milk this heresy for all it's worth. She is thus accused of overstepping her bounds by daring to adapt what others may feel is sacrosanct, in the quest of clarity. She is very serious about what she wants to say in this work, and if removing archaic language allows more young 21st century minds to get the message I think her ability to do it should be lauded and not met with derision. Seems it's okay if she writes pop hooks into her work to get the attention of the least common denominator but if she needs to change academically revered literary examples that come thisclose to communicating everything she feels important, that is NOT allowed. Borderline, borderline, borderline. Again, again, again. CC _________________________________________________________________ Get in the mood for Valentine's Day. Maybe someone will take it from there. Joni said, 1.Out of the fire like Catholic saints 2.Comes Scarlett and her deep complaint 3.Mimicking tenderness she sees 4.In sentimental movies 5.A celluloid rider comes to town 6.Cinematic lovers sway 7.Plantations and sweeping ballroom gowns 8.Take her breath away 1. "Gone With The Wind" is the story of a southern woman, Scarlett O'Hara (if I recall) who's world is crumbling. In fact, the jewel of the south, Atlanta, burned. 2. Yet Scarlett rose again. I didn't read the book, but in the movie, Scarlet was a deeply conflicted character who was secretly in love with a married man. Through it all, she imagined everything was going to magically congeal into her imagined life. If I recall, her last words were "I can't think about that now. If I did, I'd go crazy. I know; I'll think about that tomorrow." 3/4. Joni wrote a composite of characters. Here, she's tying the present-day character to an idealized past. But it's not just Scarlett's idealized past, it's also the present-day character dreaming about a life as good as her imagined life. The present-day character is imagining that her dreamscape will come to life, just as Scarlett imagined the plantation would be made whole, and she'd marry Ashley. 5/6. The author reminds us 3 times that the second character is illusory, imaginary, a work of fiction. (sentimental movies, celluoid rider, cinematic lovers) The present-day character is a dreamer too. But Scarlett is doubly a dreamy character. Not only is she locked in dreams, but she only exists in fiction. For today's character, Scarlett is both a looking glass and an imperfect mirror. She is both the ideal and the cautionary tale. 7/8. Imagery from "Gone With the Wind". Jim L.
