This is one not to be missed. It is so good to hear what she has to say these days. Helps us make it through these waves. O, speak again, bright angel! I was struck by how serious and deeply committed she is (not that we ever doubted that): My heart is broken in the face of the stupidity of my species, she said. I cant cry about it. In a way Im inoculated. Ive suffered this pain for so long. We were expelled from Eden. What keeps us out of Eden? She thought about this for a moment before riffing on a Dylan line: I tried to tell everybody, but I could not get it across. **** You got it across to *us*, Joni. Yes, you did! ***** Well, Im being more specific now, she allowed. The West has packed the whole world on a runaway train. We are on the road to extincting ourselves as a species. Thats what I meant when I said that weve got to get ourselves back to the garden. ***** We hear you loud and clear, Joni. And on a lighter note, it was interesting to see that she has gone from travelling travelling travelling in a Pinto (still can't picture that one....lol!) to a Lexus! And that she's still a night owl ("up all night in the studio"). A Joni Renaissance just at this moment of the world....how lucky we are! But speaking of, to register for Jonifest, do you have to create a separate username/password? I put my username/password that I use to browse the site and it said it didn't exist even though I was logged in already on the site while doing that. So I take it you have to regsiter something new for that? Yes? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! Done with his thick Irish accent and jig-like melody he lays down the law of "If". Growing up I remember seeing a couple of different posters of Kipling's "If" so it seems it had an effect on several generations. I can't wait to hear what Joni does whith it. I would love to hear this version of If by Vin Garbutt. Although he does have some Irish connections however, I need to point out that Vin is from the North East of England and that thick accent is actually "Geordie". The only recorded version I have is spoken by Des Lynam who is a Irish born sports reporter! Jacky ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Feb 2007 16:02:50 -0800 From: "Jill Haas" Subject: No JMC and a really crappy siong I wrote Oh Mr. Remoteness. Thanks for clarifying that I was the originator of "The Guitardos." I was about to launch myself into deep throes of despair. BTW, I got Shadows and Light on CD last night, and I think it inspired me to write a song. It's jazzy (at least in my mimd), it has some crazy Joni phrasing, and it's called "Ordinary Bliss." My greatest critic (myself) actually thinks it ain't bad. You all may think it sucks, but don't tell me. Without bridge, chorus and un-editied, it goes: as a child you dreamed of show-biz fame and glitz the dream has turned to hopelessness and an urge to call it quits now you know that's not what is and never will be true as you look back at your life look back at ordinary you who dreamed of Hollywood kisses but now you hear the voices chanting, "the dream's been traded for unwise choices" one day you'll understand you've traded dreams for bliss and now you have to find a way to live with this now I grieve my girlhood with its lonely wilderness and I never dreamed it would come to this I never thought I'd have to learn how much was given and never earned and how I'd finally understand and how I'd learn to love this ordinary bliss yet it's finally come to this it's come to this I hope that wasn't too painful to read. It is very much in need of structure, but I'm so pleased with myself for writing anything (after, oh, say 30 years of dry spell) that I had to subject all of you to my unfinished song. Thanks for tolerating. Jill - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Randy Remote" To: "Jill Haas" ; Sent: Monday, February 05, 2007 5:29 PM Subject: Re: Identifying Joni Stuff--You're all so smart!!! I'm more than a little guitarded myself, though the name is from the 60's Ray Stevens song. Great story, though-you little hell raiser! And some people still maintain that the best songs are the 3 chord ones. Louie, Louie was the first pop song I learned, I think, and House of the Rising Sun, but already more than 3 chords there. Do so only if you have money burning a hole in your pocket (a very foreign thought to me), and don't worry about it. At this point, I have enough Joni material to get me across several countries. Now I hear Monika is going to show up to the Fest on Saturday, (Yeah Monika!!!!) and after she read our post about the, um, special recording you are referring to, she said "I am so jealous! How my heart breaks!" Perhaps you can make copies for her also? She is dying to get her hands on "C'mon people now, smile on your brother, everybody GET TOGETHER, try and love one another right now! I promise no blank CDs and no snake-eyes. Thanks again for your generosity. And yes, the StarArt book did come out with the show. That's a very generous donation to the raffle. All of you who want to be rafflees (is that a word?) take heed. All I ask is that you NOT give me any blanks - not necessary. Oh, and don't give me that 'snake-eye' either. This group has been so amazingly generous with me it's truly a joy to pay it forward. Regarding the Starart show, I'm assuming that coincided with the Starart Book that came out in 1979? As synchronicity would have it, I just got a copy of that book today in the mail, I'm donating it to the Raffle. You should see the way my signature comes out sometimes. All you can make out is the first letter of my first and last name. The rest is a squiggly line or a blur.
