My name is Thea and I'm 18 years old. I'm in my first year at the University of California, Berkeley, where I intend to major in something offbeat and probably totally unemployable - if I can only figure out what! I'm a musician, having started piano lessons when I was five, then having been a member of school bands since fourth grade, playing the clarinet (for free, even if not always real good :-). I also sing a little, and want to take guitar lessons this summer. If you watched college football this fall, you may have seen me (very very briefly) on TV at Cal games, playing in the Cal Band. (Go Bears!) I was introduced to Joni's music a long, long time ago (for me)...probably in the womb. My parents owned Ladies of the Canyon, Blue, and For the Roses on vinyl from their years as Berkeley students themselves, and I remember watching my dad put FTR on our turntable, and feeling like I was in paradise when the lovely voice floated out of the speakers. Of course, I didn't have any idea what the words meant; I just liked the music! I also remember dancing around to Dog Eat Dog because I liked the beats...that was the only other Joni album we had, and I don't think I realized it was even the same person because the music sounded so different! Then in 1994, it must have been, one of the first CDs I distinctly remember my mom buying was Turbulent Indigo. I also remember hearing something about Joni Mitchell on NPR, the only radio to which we listened. I'm not sure if it was an interview, or just a review of TI, but I was excited because I actually knew who they were talking about! (Remember, I was five or six at this point.) I guess you can say it just went from there...I very gradually gathered bits of information about Joni and her music from wherever I could. I used her work whenever I could for high school projects...I remember a certain paper on inequality in America which I began with a few choice lines from "Banquet." :-) I know at least one of my teachers appreciated that; for the most part, my friends just thought I was weird. It certainly became easier to find out more about Joni when we finally got a computer at home that could connect to the Internet, which wasn't so very long ago. I found jonimitchell.com early on, was super-excited, and have kept checking back to see what was new. That's how I first found out about Travelogue, for instance. I've been (more recently) forming my own record collection, and building one of CDs as well. I think I've done pretty well on the Joni front there - I've managed to get all of her studio albums (used but still decent) on vinyl up to CMIARS, and most of them, and her later stuff, on CD too. I've really enjoyed reading the digest for the past few months, and in a way, I feel like I already know you all a little...at least those of you who post a lot. This isn't the first time I've wanted to jump in all the way, but I'm really hoping I'll be able to go for it this time! (It also doesn't hurt that I'm procrastinating on a paper right now, so this is a welcome diversion :-) Now, I've probably written more than you ever wanted to hear from me...I'll try to keep it a little shorter in future! I asked her where she got the ideas for some many amazing lyrics and she asked me "like what?". Well I said lyrics like, "there was a moon and a streetlight, didn't know I drank such alot, tilll I pissed a tequila anaconda, the full length of the parking lot." She told me about a place called Dantana's which I have been too since and sat at her table and oh my my, that girl can tell a tale or two. Yup, Atwood's speech was very funny with that wonderful dry humour and wit. I haven't seen the show on the cbc site. I hope it's something that isn't a once-only-then-it's-gone affair and that it's still there to see when I get a chance. The timing hasn't been great for me to check it out. If you saw the same views we did in the media room, then you will see that the camera went to Joni from time to time (not often enough for me!) and that there were times she was laughing and smiling and other times she seemed choked up with happy emotion. I do hope that, when they put it on TV, they show the whole thing and not just parts of it. Anyway the remastered DJRD is amazing -- I don't understand the audiophile things all I know is that the sound is amazing and I hear things in this recording that I had never heard before, and it is all very clear and beautiful. I can see it's going to set me off on a DJRD tangent. As far as other albums to work on I always thought, and so has Joni, that STAS was recorded under a bell jar but I'm not sure there's anything to be done about that. Also I have always thought that Turbulent Indigo sounds really soft and murky. When I have it on my CD changer with other CDs, I always have to go turn the sound up to try to hear the beautiful guitar work on this CD. It's a real shame because Joni does some amazing work, if not some of her best guitar work, on this album. But it's just hard to hear. When Travelogue came out some of the TI songs were fleshed out with the orchestra and I finally heard some of the guitar work translated for the orchestra and then I went back to the original album and could decipher it. Anyway thank you so much for your work, it is really quite beautiful. ... signing off for now, Peace, David - --------------------------------- Don't pick lemons. See all the new 2007 cars at Yahoo! It would be my first JoniFest, and I promise I would provide all of the excitement anyone could want, plus I know just about every joni song that ever was (human jukebox). I could ship out a Roland 88 key piano with weighted action and amp, and possibly several vintage Guild D25s and a Martin D28H, but by god, I am currently a struggling self-employed writer and graphic artist who has not had much work in a while. I would need a scholarship. Any takers? If you Talk to Me, I will be sure to piss a tequila anaconda the full length of your parking lot. I don't post very often but I am a big Joni fan. I am also a younger generation fan, although not as young as you. I am 21 years old and am currently taking time off from Brown and working on my music "career". I'm up here in my hometown, Portland, OR. I'd like to see more of the Bay Area though, I hear it's really cool. Any chance you'll be going to the Jonifest in March? I probably am. Anyway, I'm curious, as a younger fan, what's your favorite Joni time period? I haven't heard that much of her 90s stuff, but I am a pretty folk-oriented folkie, so I tend to favor her earlier stuff. Who else do you listen to? My top list off the top of my head is Joni, Joan Baez, Dylan, Mary McCaslin, Linda Ronstadt, Martha Wainwright, Leonard Cohen, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, Richard and Mimi Farina, Maria Muldaur, Laura Nyro. Glad to see you on the board. - - Kira Lesley NP: Karen Dalton, "Katie Cruel" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2007 11:14:23 -0800 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: DJRD remastered from: "David Sapp" I always thought, and so has Joni, that STAS was recorded under a bell jar but I'm not sure there's anything to be done about that. If you love STAS, you owe it to yourself to pick up the HDCD version. It is like hearing it for the first time, like a blanket is lifted from the sound. C&S is the other release that showed the most change between the first pressings and the HDCD remasters. There is a little HDCD logo on the back cover, and the disc. You don't need a HDCD player to hear the difference (I don't have one). I would think that most of the titles in circulation now are the remasters, though there still may be some of the old ones sitting on the shelves of some stores. I listened to David's DJRD last night, compared to the original CD, it has more clarity in the top end. I don't have the HDCD version of that one, so can't compare it to that. Now if she meant she was most fond of that band, that's a different story, particularly as they toured during such a good time for her and Larry. It does look on RotR like they all had a lot of fun. My point here is I really enjoyed all the performances and in all honesty think they should all be released in their entirety! But my bigger point is I keep having the performance of "Blue" in my head. You know, the one where Joni's wearing a dress that almost looks like a nightgown. I believe, if I remember correctly, it was from 1970. Her hair also had a wave to it. It wasn't straight as a stick which it often is. Anyway, I thought it was a very lovely performance, which is nothing new, but for some reason it really sticks in my head. Just the image of her in front of the piano sitting there. I guess in a way she looked very classy, not that she ever looks trashy or anything, hahaha. Perhaps other worldy? I don't want to raise her up on some pedestal but I don't know why but that clip really got me man.
