I'd like to throw my 2 cents into this discussion. I disagree that Tom Scott sound like the theme from Barney Miller on Miles of Aisles. BTW I loved that show. Wasn't there a spin off called, Fish? Anyway, Miles of Aisles was one of the first albums by Joni I ever heard but I recently listened to it again after a long absence as well as the song Joni recorded with him for his album - Love Poem. Although the sound in general is dated, it is beautiful. The secret is to listen with an open mind and immerse yourself in the period. Rainy Night House is sublime. I also love that version of Woodstock. I have a new appreciation for Love or Money since hearing Ian Shaw's cover of it thanks to Bob. I am baffled why it never ended up on DJRD with Jericho. There is this very cool artist named SuZanna Anna selling artwork out on ebay consisting of lyrics painted on 9 5"x5" blocks of wood. So far I have seen her use Elton John's "How Wonderful Life Is While Your In The World" and Neil Young's "It's Better To Burn Out Than To Fade Away ". I would like to have her to do a similar treatment with a Joni lyric, but in order for it to work it needs to consist of 9 words. So far, all I've come up with is "I Tell Amelia It Was Just A False Alarm". While this is a great lyric, it's not quite the sentiment I was hoping for. As a result, I thought I would challenge the list to see if they could come up with a great Joni lyric that fits the 9 word requirement. May your year be filled with hope, love and light and good parties. I think the reason why Tom Scott's music from the 70s sounds like 70s TV show tunes is that a lot of the local L.A. musicians back then made their real living composing theme songs for TV and movies, including Tom. The locals are still doing the same today. I agree that it does sound a bit dated and wonder if those guys never brought their talents to TV if their music would sound more original and less mediocre in retrospect. Mike Post was the most famous of the TV song composers but Tom was also big in it, too. I've excerpted a list of his credits below. Tom very rarely plays the little clubs here every now and then but every time he gets rave reviews. He is very talented. From http://www.tomscottmusic.com/ Tom Scott is a renowned composer, arranger, producer, musical director and saxophonist. He has twenty-six solo recordings to his credit and for these efforts has earned three Grammy Awards and thirteen Grammy nominations. His other career achievements include composing film scores, among them Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, Uptown Saturday Night, Stir Crazy, Hanky Panky, The Sure Thing, Just One Of The Guys, Soul Man, and Shakes the Clown. His television composing and conducting credits include themes for Family Ties, Starsky & Hutch, Square Pegs, the Academy Awards, the Emmy Awards, the Celebration At Ford's Theater, the People's Choice Awards, Comic Relief, the Carol Burnett Show, the Pat Sajak Show, and background scores for Baretta, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, Streets Of San Francisco, National Geographic Explorer, and numerous T.V. Specials and Network Movies. He has served as Musical Director for Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, Olivia Newton-John, and the GRP All-Star Big Band--and has toured five continents as leader of his own group. He produced two CD's for tenor vocalist Daniel Rodriguez (a.k.a. 'The Singing Policeman') and has conducted over 30 symphony orchestras for Daniel. Brecker died in New York of leukemia, according to his longtime friend and agent, Darryl Pitt. In recent years, the saxophonist had struggled myelodysplastic syndrome, a cancer in which the bone marrow stops producing enough healthy blood cells. The disease, known as MDS, often progresses to leukemia. Becker, who had a home in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, was born in 1949 in Philadelphia and had won 11 Grammys for his work as a tenor saxophonist. He was inspired to study the tenor saxophone by the work of jazz legend John Coltrane, according to his website. He and his brothers led a successful jazz-rock fusion group called the Brecker Brothers. Throughout his career, he recorded and performed with numerous jazz and pop music leaders, including Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell, according to the site. His technique on the saxophone was widely emulated and taught. Jazziz magazine once called him "inarguably the most influential tenor stylist of the last 25 years." Though somewhat introverted, his struggle with the blood disease led him to publicly encourage people to enroll in marrow donor programs. http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2007-01-13-brecker-sax_x.htm?csp=34 - ----------------------------------------------------------- Politicians and diapers both need to be changed often. Why them? Hmm, I think in a way they all brought something or other to her music and her musical development. My favorite Joni is For The Roses. That is her masterpiece to me. Wilton Felder and Tom Scott (billed as I recall as "Tommy Scott") played on that album. But their influence is very subtle and Joni is way out in front. On subsequent albums there is more of a melange of sounds and influences - Jaco and Metheny for example. I think Klein's influence almost overshadows her at times. The one musician who I think most perfectly melds with Joni every time is Wayne Shorter. Can't really articulate why - it's just something you know when you hear it.
