As far as Joni's albums go, I bought "For The Roses" without listening to it first because the library didn't have it and because it sounded so interesting from what I read about it. The LOTC years were really something. As you said, "It's just crazy how inspiring that one relationship was and how much output it produced." You asked if anyone has ever heard "Simple Man". Oh, mon Dieu, oui. It is one of the most beautiful love songs I have ever heard. And "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" is just so *true*. When I heard them sing that this summer the beautiful harmonies and the truth of the whole song just -- I don't know how to say it. Laser beams that went directly to your soul? There were not many dry eyes in the seats around me. (I'm welling up again just thinking about it.) Since you are really getting into all of this Joni history, I think a "must-see" for you now is the dvd "Woman of Heart and Mind". It's a little biography/documentary of Joni. The interview with Graham Nash is one of the best parts. The way he talks about her gives you goosebumps -- he still has so much love and respect and even reverence for her. It gives you chills. And guess what? You don't even have to go to the library! I have an extra copy I can send you. LOL...well-meaning friends give me Joni stuff, but more often than not, I already have it. So, send me your snail mail address off-list and I'll get it in the mail as soon as I can. The gift goes on. Peace, Patti P. allHey everyone. Today one of the cds I grabbed to take to work was "Ladies Of The Canyon." When Willy was playing it got me thinking about how many different songs were written about or from Graham Nash's and Joni's relationship. That song, "Willy", is a really sweet song to write for someone though it has its doubts which I'd imagine one would have when in love..I suppose so. It's just a good expression of everything really. But just think about it man. She wrote that for Graham and I can tell in some of her lyrics she refers to her relationship with him. He wrote "Our House" about them. He wrote "Simple Man" right after their breakup (anyone ever hear that song? It's such a pretty, sad song). Neil Young wrote "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" for Graham after their breakup, etc etc. It's just crazy how inspiring that one relationship was and how much output it produced. I think they did look nice together as well, Graham and Joni. Now Joni dated David Crosby too but come on now, she could do better than that. No offense to Crosby (like his music, his singing, whatever) but he isn't the type of guy that girls dream about...eh. Far from it. But as we all know, it didn't last but that's not my point. I just find it fascinating that so much was written from that. Creativity works in mysterious ways...or maybe not so mysterious afterall :). - - -Monika _________________________________________________________________ The MSN Entertainment Guide to Golden Globes is here. Generally, the songs on the Blue album are considered to be about Joni's relationship to Graham Nash, while For The Roses (the song and album) are about James Taylor. For The Roses (the song) also deals with Joni's conflicted feelings about both her own newfound fame, and the even larger stardom of Taylor. The song reads as a direct letter to him-"did you get a round [of applause] way up here?" "...girls who just have to tell me they saw you somewhere.." She harshly talks about the music business suits who "have slices of you from the company", and "toss around your latest golden egg", wondering what financial gain may be in store for them. Apparently she retreated to a remote house in British Columbia to ponder dropping out of the music scene. This song, with the lines about the arbutus, was surely conceived there. The last lines reflect a cynical view regarding public adulation: Oh the power and the glory Just when you get the taste for worship They start bringing out the hammers And the boards and the nails ..evoking eventual crucifixion. The nexus of art vs. business are echoed in the lines about a poet trying to market "his soul". Yet she admits to biting the hand that brings her "things she can't give up, just yet"....and, as you probably know, she did return to make another record, Court and Spark, which became her biggest seller ever, propelling her, ironically perhaps, into much wider fame.
