[Merk54@aol.com] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 8 Jan 2007 01:48:53 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Joni Mitchell Songbook Bruce, I don't know about the book but I'm sure it is a collector's item... if you want to play joni's alt tunings... the jmdl guitar site is an amazing source of information thanks to sue, howard, marian & others -- go to http://jmdl.com/guitar/ >I have a copy a copy of "Joni Mitchell Songbook - Gomplete volume number 1 (1966-1970)". It appears to be a first edition, from Siquomb Publishing Corp., 1974. I gave it to my wife in 1981. I'm an aspiring guitarist, and knowing that Joni uses many open tunings, they don't seem to appear in this volume. Most of the chords seem to be first position open chords, generally speaking. Are these 30+ songs from "Songs to a Seagull", "Clouds" and "Ladies of the Canyon" all in standard concert tuning on the six string? Would they sound correct with the records as noted? If not, where could I compare these progressions with the open tuning, if any? I was just curious to hear some history and comments, musical or general, about this beautiful book. Thanks, Bonneville Bruce< ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jan 2007 08:03:35 -0800 (PST) From: Michael Flaherty Subject: Re: Joni's Smackdown in Indy/Fans/Concerts From: Norma Jean Garza >When Joni's played here in San Antonio, we were all enraptured... Even after one of her concerts about 1974, one of the mainstrean top 40's radio station, which never played Joni, said, "you could hear a pin drop throughout the whole concert." Was she the headliner? The problem with the Dylan tour is that Dylan brings in a lot loud jerks. I'm not blaming Bob--anyone that big will do so. Fortunately, in Chicago, I was surrounded by people who were at least respectful, if unenthusiastic. However, I heard from others that some were yelling for her to get off the stage, and she did have to "smackdown" a heckler at one point (albeit more quickly than in Indiana). I hope with "no major labels" comes "no opening slots". (I think that's a pretty good bet.) :) Michael Flaherty Tired of spam? Yahoo! She will have to deal with a distributor if she wants to get into the stores. I've been 'wait and see' about it, but it sounds more like it will really happen. But at this point, any way she can *deny* the star maker machinery would make me happy. A few after that had them, but not many-TTT and TI come to mind. Your book, if I remember right, has some of her early unreleased songs in it, like "Eastern Rain". The chords, as you suspect, are not as Joni played them-she has only written a couple of songs in standard tuning. As Kate says, the jmdl guitar section has tons of her songs "reverse engineered" by some very dedicated pickers. AND, lev moross has updated his gallery website to include photos of the installation(which in my opinion is beautiful with amazing shots), the banner outside, and pictures of the catalog(just as cassy described it). for thoose who aren't near the gallery it's worth a look. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Jan 2007 19:31:10 -0600 From: Dave Subject: Re: [WARNING - NOT VIRUS SCANNED]JMDL Digest V2007 #3 > Kissinger surely killed more souls than Hussein ever dreamed of. I got to thinking about all those Gibb brothers from Wollongong and was wondering what all their kids were doing these days. It seems most of them are in music to varying degrees of success. I came across this little blurb about Spencer Gibb (Maurice's son, I believe). Here is a short excerpt: "Spencer`s vocals do not sound especially like his uncles and dad and the music isn`t especially Bee Gees either. They call their style: alternative/pop/rock/psychedelic and they were influenced by people like Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd and Prince." At least the kids have good taste. Not sure if anyone has reported this yet, but I got a mailing from Lev Moross Gallery today anouncing the closing of Joni's show. The contents read as follows: Dear Friends, I would be very please if you could join me at the Lev Moross Gallery on Thursday, January 18 from 7 - 10 pm for our private closing reception of my new artwork. Hope to see you there! Joni Mitchell I'm assuming everyone who bought something (I purchased one of the catalogues) will receive an invitation like this. Hmmm - I wonder if I could swing a trip out to LA next week?
