It can be great fun at this party. It's great to hear about your discovering Joni's music. Your description of hearing River is one that many of us are familiar with i'd say. Isn't it a great feeling when you realise that you have found something that will be with you for a long time? I hope you enjoy your journey through Joni's catalogue and hopefullly she will be putting something new out in the next year or two. My own discovery of Joni's music began in 1998 and 1999 as i went searching for Chelsea Morning. I became entranced by what i described at the time as raw music, heart music. It struck me that Joni's music was real and her singing was real. Not quite top forty hits in the late ninties. There were albums that became very special to me and then there were albums that i found harder to like. But they grew on me. I still find myself listening to an album like Hissing of Summer Lawns (HOSL) and discovering new meanings to the lyrics, new sounds that i had not heard before, new moods and tones in there taht had passed me by previously. I didn't really like HOSL first few listens mind you. I wanted another Blue or FTR of C & S. But with Joni you never get that, you never get another of anything. She challenges you and takes her own direction. My opinion was that HOSL sounded dated. Now i look at it as a record of a specific period. it doesn't sound dated. it sounds honest. That's one little story about one of Joni's albums. And then when you feel like it, there are many recordings of Joni playing live from the mid-sixties up to her most recent shows. I have always enjoyed hearing the very early shows and the songs that are not on Joni's albums, the wit and banter, the fun she was having. That's ahead of you. Have fun. I would like to know what other music you listen to. Looking at your myspace profile i can see that you like Dylan, Neil young and others. Many of us here would be with you (others are deaf and just can't "get" Dylan;-) Also, i have heard Joni on commercial radio occasionally. Last week when i was in the kitchen the DJ intorduced big yellow taxi (BYT) by saying that Joni Mitchell probably blows the others that she is often considered alongside right out of the water. He probably could have played river or last time i saw richard or down to you or judgment of the moon and stars or the jungle line or hejira or paprika plains or sweet sucker dance or cherokee louise or night ride home or ...... to actually prove his point, lol. But as you said, much of Joni's music is not very radio friendly. I'll stop my rambling. Welcome to the list, i look forward to seeing your name here. It's great to be here. The song I heard when I was working was "Free Man In Paris." I was very impressed by the singing and the content of the song. So I downloaded the song. Then I wanted more so I ordered Court and Spark from the library and was impressed with the album. I got the tip from someone to get Blue from the library as well. This was a few months back and I can proudly say I now own those albums among a few others. Also, when I first heard "River" I thought, "hey I've heard this before" (probably a cover version or somewhere in a store). The second thing I thought was, "whoa, I wish I had a river....that's amazing (that line really got me man)." The third thing I thought (after listening to the song all the way through) was holy shit! I played that song over and over and over probably a good hundred times after the first listen. It's all gone from there! - - -Monika ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Jan 2007 07:14:29 -0800 (PST) From: gaston peeters Subject: Re: Joni & the radio Motitan@aol.com wrote: Hey, I was wondering if the radio stations (classic rock, oldies, whatever would fit) you listen to ever play any of Joni's music? -Monika *** Here in Belgium they occasionally play "Big Yellow Taxi", and that's more or less it I'm afraid. We don't have a Classic Rock station, but they have one in Holland. They have a playlist of maybe 100 songs that they play 24/7, year in year out. They never play any Joni as far as I know. In fact, they almost never play anything from female artists, except for Jefferson Airplane's (Grace Slick) "Somebody To Love", which you can hear maybe three or four times a day. No one could nor can hold a candle to Joni. Not Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Janis Ian, Marianne Faithfull, Maria Muldaur, Carly Simon, Carole King, Valerie Carter, Joan Armatrading, Laura Nyro, Cassandra Wilson, Nancy Griffith, and several other of my favorite artists. Only RLJ trails right behind Joni as if Rickie Lee is holding on to the train of Joni's pretty white lace satin gown with mama's nylons 'neath Joni's cowgirl lace around the seam jeans. The most beautiful lady and the loveliest flower girl on earth, to me. The late 70's going into 80's were weird and boring because the music movement was changing from disco to punk rock or something strange (excluding Springsteen, Neil Young, Stones and a few others.) Even Dylan got me confused with his born again Christianity and that was the final straw that broke the camel's back because I thought he was doing it just to sell records. I was bummed out, musically speaking, other than for Joni...I was into Mingus, only and that took sort of intense study (couldn't figure out which was easier, calculus, chemistry or Mingus.) Well, since I was always at the music stores after my college courses and between mothering my little son, I came across this pretty girls face and a guitar on an album cover and thought, "Whoa, this might just be it." The album had been released that day. I took the album home and was absolutely relieved. Raced to my parents home like an "excitable girl" and turned all my siblings on to Rickie Lee. It was love at first senses. A couple months later she had the Chuckie hit and our little secret was gone...oh well! My youngest sister and I saw RLJ in Austin at La Zona Rosa, an intimate joint, a couple of years ago (same place I saw Warren Zevon before he got sick and Warren and I were jamming to each other big time. I'm not kidding, I went to the ladies room for a cigarette and when I came out, Warren was doing this awesome riff and he saw me on the side and motioned me strictly with the guitar neck to sit my ass down and I did so, suppressing my laughter and heard the rest of that awesome riff that he blew me out into space and I came down all frazzled.) That's another story where I followed Warren through NY, Philly, New Jersey, Houston, Austin, Seattle...I'll tell y'all later. I came home exhausted! Rickie Lee's concert was, well, I can't describe it, either. The only words that come to mind are splendid, ethereal. It had a soothing-sweet feel with this powerful positive, truthful energy, along with downright anger towards George Bush and she called him "ugly man" loud and clear in the middle of downtown Austin for all to hear! I was laughing like "Oh my God!" and shedding soft tears at same time. She spoke OUT when most others were silent. The band was outta sight! The ambiance was that of a tight knit family with a sister in loving and brave arms because we knew what was up and that concert was a meeting of the minds. After the concert, my sister met up with her and I always shy away from well known musicians out of respect for their private space as I expect others to respect my space, even as I perform "simple things around the house" or whatever. My sister took a photograph with RLJ and told her that she grew up with Joni's and her music because her older sister of 19 years, me, would never let a day go by without playing their love. When my sister motioned to me, Rickie Lee and I met with our eyes, smiled at each other softly and spoke in silence---no words necessary. First and foremost, it's Joni, then it's Rickie Lee and then the rest come in. Joni and Rickie Lee, thank you and I LOVE Y'ALL!!! Joni 's my #1, from childhood to the moment and through eternity...I'm tried and true. nj - --- Joseph Palis wrote: > Good thing for you, Stewart, because you have been > to a Joni performance while I am just deaming > through the noise (apologies to Vienna Teng) about > it. > > That's an interesting comment about Joni and her > interaction with her audience. I can relate to what you say about the appearance of that first RLJ record. A fresh and unique sound that appealed to me and all of my friends with our disparate tastes. I listened to that one a lot, and eagerly awaited the follow-up which was an even stronger effort imo. That pretty much sealed it for me, I've been a loyal fan ever since. I thought it funny that she put out a record of covers (It's Like This) around the same time as Joni (BSN) and thought that hers was infinitely superior. Now I'm watching the calendar for her new work. 'The Evening Of My Best Day' was probably my favorite album of its year - you can check the archives and see that that's the truth. The 2007 inductees, including celebrated folk icon Joni Mitchell and the illustrious Quebec performer Jean-Pierre Ferland, will be honoured at the CSHFs 4th Annual Gala, presented by TD Canada Trust on Sunday, January 28, 2007 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centres John Bassett Theatre. Hosted by CBCs Andrew Craig and Radio-Canadas Sophie Durocher, the CSHF Gala will feature musical tributes by a stellar line up of performers. Joining legendary inductees Leonard Cohen and Gilles Vigneault, the 2007 CSHF songwriter inductees are: Broadway and film score creator Raymond Egan (The Pioneers), the father of Canadian country music Wilf Carter aka Montana Slim (Radio Era), confessional songstress Joni Mitchell and passionate Quebec artist Jean-Pierre Ferland (Modern Era). Five of Joni's hits will also be inducted: BSN, Woodstock, BYT, Help Me and YTMOIAR. Looks like 2007 is starting out with a bang for Joni ! Sometimes I like it when artists do get to reprimand the audience for rude behavior although I don't think I'd do what French tenor Roberto Alagna did a few weeks ago in a performance in "Aida" where he stormed off the stage mid-aria because the die-hard and obnoxious opera cognoscenti in La Scala started to make noises to annoy him. Joni seems like an artist to me who will chastise people if they exhibit rudeness. Thank God there was have been no heckler(s) during much of the concerts I watched in the past.
