Here's another repackaged concert. This is Joni's Tokyo concert from her Refuge World Tour from 1983. There are a couple interesting firsts in it for me. As I mentioned before, she performs Marvin Gaye's, "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" segued from "Edith and The Kingpin". Interesting song coupling. The other first for me is her performance of "Cotton Avenue". I have never heard Joni perform that song live before. This is also a double disc and I have again made a CD cover for it. Here is the link for CD1. I will upload CD2 with the artwork tomorrow. Here's the link http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FGND8WKA Enjoy. Next milestones: BYT #200 & ACOY #100. (And of course, Dancing Clown #1) As for the '83 tour, she flipped around her setlists quite a bit - I have a bunch of those shows and I don't think any of them have the exact same setlists. BUT she always encored with "Grapevine" no matter what. Can't wait to listen to them all, and to share with other friends. There's a Joan Baez list, too? Holy Mackerel. I'll have to check that out, too. So many places and links to go to, so little time......flip city! And speaking of other lists, I saw a friend Saturday night at our god-daughter's Nutcracker performance and asked him: "Where is Donna?" (his g/f). He said: "In Phoenix at Alice Cooper's birthday party." (She has ACOCD and is on his list.). Anyway, the interesting part for me is that he said Stephen Stills is at the b/day party, too. Okay, now I'm really late for work -- yet another J-RA. Will you guys stop posting so much riveting stuff? I'll share my Youtube secret: 1. Pull up the YouTube homepage: http://www.youtube.com/ 2. In the upper right hand corner is YouTube's search engine - type in "Joni Mitchell". 3. After the page loads, click on the link on the left hand side that says 'Date Added' - when this page loads it will show you the most recently added videos first. 4. Bookmark this page as a favorite, and then all you have to do is click on the bookmark every day to display the newest Joni-related videos. (Today is the video for Steven Curtis Chapman singing The Circle Game). And if you don't want to do any of that - not to worry. I'll still post clips from time to time, sometimes it makes a good conversation topic. Bob, I didn't think of this this morning, but it is hard to understand that anyone would go from that to Travelogue. Does the lady like her icy altitudes...? This may come across as a bit incoherent, but in one of the interveiws that were discussed here recently she spoke about how jazzmusicians knew something about music and colours that rockers just didn't get. I'm not sure what she meant but clearly she connects with jazz musicians, that is obvious from the videos. There is so much going on between them. I think that connection is mostly lost on Travelogue... It's her and an orchestra, not her in an orchestra, somehow. How strange. Btw, concerning the name Bob: Mark sent me an internet-translated email, in Danish, this morning. Bob Dylan was translated into Hoppe Dylan... I never thought of this before: that bob could mean to hop or bounce. What a dynamic name you have there! Tell The Wind by Patti Witten I think I'm still a member of this list although absent for quite a while. I felt compelled to write because I want to plug some great new music for your giving pleasure. I was fortunate enough to attend the CD party for the debut of Patti Witten's new CD "Tell The Wind" a while back. Patti was playing with the band and had a full audience of Ithaca eclectics. I was familiar with the song list because Patti played some of her songs to me personally over the summer when I was having a sad day. What a great gift and suddenly I was not sad anymore. So when I think about the songs on this new album I think of an internal version of rock anthems. My personal definition of a rock anthem is 1) the sound of the four horsemen of the apocalypse (bass or hard rock guitar lead) 2) fist shaking lyrics 3) a bridge with a Valkyrie chorus 4) transcendent finale. You can immediately think of at least one: usually a Bruce Springsteen or Heart song. But what is an internal rock anthem? It's not an UN-anthem because you still get the heart going and feel the lift of spirit. It's an intimate conversation with the artist about this fantasy landscape in our minds that tells a story of our dreams and disappointments (think Joni) without any sappy sentiment but a transcendent push to a new journey. I especially love my favorite internal rock anthem on Tell the Wind "Perfect Blue." The guitar lead cantors in and the fist pounds the heart while your eyes close softly in the moonlight. harmonics ... bring in the bridge to the truth of the matter ... perfect blue ... transcendent hope. I like this type of rock anthem much better than "badlands." Although there is always a time and a place to sing at the top of your lungs. I rather like to listen quietly to everything that is going on inside and outside the lines of an internal rock anthem (think Hejira). And Dandelion. What a great cover! Patti and the band did a wonderful version of this song at the CD party. It retains the psychedelia by the layered craftwork of Patti's mix of sounds and harmonies. This disc is a great work of production as are all of Patti's previous albums. If you are looking for another excuse to put in the buds and get transcendent, why not get two, one for you and one for your transcendent pen pal! :-) Go get Tell The Wind at http://www.pattiwitten.com or you can also download the discs on ITunes. Have a wonderful holiday and hope you get all the great music you deserve!! suemc favorite lyric on Tell The Wind ...
