And a question about crows Some time ago we discussed Jonis late work mostly Travelogue and Both Sides Now. My friend just returned BSN to me, after almost two years of borrowing it. I can only say again how impressed I am with this CD, and how I prefer it to TLog. I wish I understood music better, because I just lack the insight to say what it is. But it is something about Jazz that is so structured and so high flying at the same time. I think it suits her mature voice so well. It's as if she has a really tight but bouncy frame, and she can put all that Joni emotion, the sadness and the tenderness and the youthful rebelliousness, into it and stretch it without its losing its form. Like some tightropewalker who performs the most dramatic moves but always knows exactly where to put her feet, that is how I think she moves on that CD. Oh! Its beautiful! ! In contrast, I find that many of the songs on TLog are strangely frameless. Maybe it's because I've listened to too much jazz...? Finally, a question: does anyone know why are there crows or similar birds on I Wish I Were in Love Again? Every time I hear the song I am vaguely reminded of other places I have lived, because I always think for a moment that the crows are outside my window and not in the song. So I remember myself sitting in some other room(s) thinking, oh we have birds here! They _are_ birds, aren't they????? (In German, when someone 'has a bird', it means they have a bee in their bonnet...hmmm...) They said she joined in New England (which sounds right to me). Simon lists http://www.jonimitchell.com/chronology/ shows Nov 13, 1975 in New Haven CT (2 shows). That's the way the Revue was booked in some cities. Then he has her in Niagara Falls, New York. I saw Joni at the 2nd show of "The Rolling Thunder Revue" at Rochester, New York's War Memorial on Nov 17, 1975. The string of dates ended at "The Night of the Hurricane Madison Square Garden". So, I'm not a betting man, but I'd say she played in 14 cities, in 16 evenings. Jim L. Actually it was not really about her as much as what she had to say about the late cabaret matriarch Mabel Mercer's version of "Both Sides Now". The book mentioned that in 1991, Joni considered Mercer's BSN version as the best version of all she has heard ever since. Anyone knows where to find this article when Joni said this? Not that I distrust John Gavin (who is one jazz critic I respect along with Gene Lees, Leonard Feather and Bob Blumenthal), but I'd like to read the context behind this official announcement. It has taken me part of last night and most of today but with a lot of help from you guys, I have finally put together the most comprehensive recording of Joni's performances at the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. It has now blown out to a double disc and I have adjusted the CD cover to correspond. This was a real jigsaw puzzle but with the help of people like Richard Flynn, I have nailed down the dates and venues. Obviously, as I have said before, Joni performed several songs in each gig so, many of the songs are repeated. These are, however, different gigs and not the same tracks repeated. Some are even performed back to back for the sake of chronology. I have arranged these by date. There are now six sets. The length is 1:40:00 so, it needs to go on two CDs. I have already divided it up into two CDs. Also, being so long, it was too much to upload in one file so, there are to folders; CD 1 and CD 2. CD 2 also contains the updated cover. For Mona and others who don't want to register on yousendit.com, I have uploaded them onto megaupload.com. I egistered with yousendit.com because it allows you to upload up to 100mb. I have never received any spam from that site so, it seems to be quite safe to me. Here is the tracklist: CD 1 Set One: Boston, MA November 21, 1975 (probably Cambridge) Afternoon 1. Harry's House 2. Don't Interrupt The Sorrow Evening 1. Edith and The Kingpin 2. Don't Interrupt The Sorrow Set Two: Hartford, CT. November 24, 1975 1. Don't Interrupt The Sorrow 2. Edith and The Kingpin Set Three: Augusta, ME. November 26, 1975 1. Edith and The Kingpin 2. Don't Interrupt The Sorrow 3. Coyote (first performance of this song) Set Four: Toronto, ON. December 1, 1975 1. Woman of Heart and Mind 2. Coyote 3. Edith and The Kingpin 4. Don't Interrupt The Sorrow 5. This Land Is Your Land (with Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Roger McGuinn, Bobby Neuwirth and Gordon Lightfoot) Set Five: Toronto, ON. December 2, 1975 1. Woman of Heart and Mind 2. Coyote 3. Edith and The Kingpin 4. Don't Interrupt The Sorrow 5. This Land Is Your Land Set Six: New York, NY. December 8, 1975 1. Shadows and Light 2. Coyote 3. Edith and The Kingpin 4. Don't Interrupt The Sorrow 5. Woman of Heart and Mind Being separate concerts, the quality varies but a lot of it is very good. It's a shame that Joni didn't sing different songs in each concert but that's the nature of a tour. I hope I've got it all straight now.
