I've been quite sick this weekend so not much energy to do anything active. I have taken advantage of the situation by spending a quiet Sunday afternoon repackaging the Rolling Thunder Revue of Joni's performance into a CD package. It was difficult to pin down the actual dates but according to Wikipedia, Joni joined the tour in the northeast in December, 1975. She performed at 3 concerts. The sets were very similar so, it seems like the tracks are repeated but these are all three sets. I have designed a CD cover to go with it and numbered the tracks so you can keep track of the sets. I just couldn't pin down the three actual dates. The total time comes to just over 60 minutes so, it will fit nicely on a CD. Even though this is not a full Joni concert, I think it is an important performance of hers. Firstly, she introduces her new song, Coyote which she says she wrote while on the tour bus. Her performances of the other songs are quite unique too, especially, the first track, Shadows & Light. While searching for specific information, I read that Sam Shepherd accompanied them to document the tour for a book. This brought me back to a discussion a while ago about who Coyote was written about. The consensus seemed to point to him. That makes sense to me now. With so many talented people on the tour, I guess Sam couldn't keep his hands to himself. I wonder if the "woman down the hall" was Joan Baez. Joni, having joined the tour so late may have been the inspiration for the line, "I just get off up a ways. You just picked up a hitcher, a prisoner of the freeway". Anyway, if you would like the package, you can download it here: http://download.yousendit.com/49DB126B232D8300 I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Les for uploading the Green Flag Song series. What a treat for those of us too far away from LA to be able to see this exhibition. It occurred to me that this may be the name of Joni's new album. Just a thought. Leaving aside the whole magical TV thing, this piece is germane to the jonilist. We don't really need to talk more about how fabulous Joni is, although it's interesting to watch her progress and to hear her words (songs). Rather, we are really talking about our own progress as fans. After all what are we doing here? It's about our experience as fans. Wrongo, music cover boy. I don't mean to nitpick, but technically Joni did not perform at that time in Boston. Rolling Thunder actually played across the Charles River in Cambridge at the old Harvard Square Theater, when it was one big auditorium -- before it was chopped up into little megaplex-type theaters. In the archive of Joni's pics there are a couple that show her wrapped up in winter clothes trudging along on the raliroad tracks, a typical kind of promo shot for a folkie back then but to me those shots bring back the lonely Joni, from the time she broke off with Chuck on... trains, busses, planes, all alone... I remember the night she flew in from Toronto, devestated because, according to her, they had 'smashed' her Martin D28 guitar. Fortunately I also played the same model so she used mine for that weekend. As a performer yourself, I'm sure you can imagine how it was... alone on the road. Her only friends were the other musicians (who usually weren't that friendly to one another) and 'locals' at the clubs she played, those, like myself, who worked there and those perhaps who were just always there when she played... I think it was harder because while she was leaving herself open and reaching out for love and friendship she was constantly always being sought out by these guys who wanted to take her away or something. It makes me think of her beautiful "Jericho": "I'll try to keep myself open up to you That's a promise that I made to love When it was new Just like Jericho I said "Let these walls come tumbling down" I said it like I finally found the way To keep the good feelings alive I said it like it was something to strive for I'll try to keep myself open up to you And approve your self expression I need that too I need your confidence baby And the gift of your extra time In turn I'll give you mine Sweet darling it's a rich exchange It seems to me It's a warm arrangement Anyone will tell you Just how hard it is to make and keep a friend Maybe they'll short sell you Or maybe it's you Judas in the end When you just can no longer pretend That you're getting what you need Or you're giving out anything for them to grow and feed on I'll try to keep myself open up to you It gets easier and easier to do Just like Jericho Let these walls come tumbling down now Let them fall right on the ground Let all these dogs go running free The wild and the gentle dogs Kenneled in me" Wow! I have just discovered a mistake in my track listing. Two of the songs are repeated. It took me so long to work out this sequence and now I realise I've got it all wrong. So sorry about that. My head hurts from trying to work this out. I'll have another crack at it another time. My husband and I went to LA this weekend to use some movie tickets we got months ago and I kind of insisted we drive to Hollywood to see Joni's exhibit. There was no one in the gallery but us and we met Lev who was kind enough to talk to us about the show, about Joni, show us the beautiful catalogs he designed ($175 I think?) and the framed prints available ($7,000?) not to mention the prints themselves which are $17K. I don't know. My mind was reeling. The show is dark lightwise and subjectwise. After the third room of these triptychs, I said I would be sick at heart to look at these images nonstop for six months (which is what it took her and Lev to get them done). Very powerful. But I guess when you're inspired with something you've got to let it go to its end. Lev is such a nice man. Didn't know us at all and was so nice to share part of his afternoon with us. He's thrilled to have met and worked with Joni. Glad you guys found the LA Times article because he showed it to us, we went and bought a copy of the LA Times and couldn't find it. Wah. But there it is. So glad to have seen the show. And there was one photo as you're entering the gallery that must have been Lev and Joni raising the banner outside the gallery. You can only see part of Joni's face but that woman just lights up a picture, doesn't she? She's looking up and there's a big smile on her face. Beautiful photo. I'd love to go and immerse myself in the exhibit for a few hours. I am a huge Georgia O'Keefe fan and did that in Chicago a few years ago with an exhibit of hers. I am planning a trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts during the holidays to view Annie Leibovitz exhibit "American Music" which looks fascinating to me; I love her work, especially the photo she took of Joni in the garden.
