VLJC I'm glad Ohio got its act together to ban smoking in public places. We have such a ban in MA. Unlike seatbelts and motorcycle helmets (which I think are good ideas, but I could be presuaded either way about laws requiring them), smoking always has an effect on others. The other two are only an issue in case of an accident. And (dragging myself up on that old tired soapbox), having had the identical chemo that is used for lung cancer, I can tell you how much fun it isn't. Smoking is BAD, BAD, BAD. Not to mention putting money in the greedy pockets of some mighty big corporations. NOT smoking is rebellious and subversive :-) Joni, are you listening? And (change of topic) I noticed an ad on tv the other night in which River plays in the background. I said aloud to all my companions, "OMG it's Joni!" LOL They all laughed at my sudden outburst, and I was like, "I'm so happy now!" I can see both sides of the argument about outlawing smoking in private establishments, but it was this law and the general growing intolerance for smoking that finally pushed me to do what I had always thought would be impossible. I am trying to help a very good friend who's making his first baby steps towards quitting now. He said it was very helpful when I told him that I once thought that if I quit cigs I would go through life craving them, as one does when one is a smoker and might go for a brief period without a smoke. But the fact is, I almost never want a cigarette now. Often the smell of cigarette smoke makes me want to hurl! I am grateful for no-smoking laws and for the friends -- some of them from this list -- who helped me find the courage to quit. Life is so much better without cigarettes. I do things I never could do before -- like exercise! (I am about to go ice skating at a brand new outdoor rink that opens today at lunchtime in a few minutes.) These are uncompressed WAV files for those who care about such things -- they are not the MP3 versions. For those not familiar with trading trains, here is how they work: When the disks come to you, you make copies of as much of the contents as you want, and then you post back to this list offering to pass the disks along to the next person. You do not keep the originals -- you keep the copies you made for yourself. On most trains, the convention is that you make the copies and send the masters along within two days. For these trains, you must agree to turn them around within two weeks. Sometimes the offer goes unclaimed. Bob and I expect that to happen from time to time. So, by participating, you agree to just hang on to the disks and then make another offer a month or so later (or to respond if somebody posts a grovel looking for them). In theory, if everybody takes good care of the disks, wrapping them well, not letting them get scratched, etc. and passes them along, these covers will run on the tracks for years. Nobody is going to monitor the progress of these trains so if you participate and then lose the disks or fail to reoffer them, you will have kept others from enjoying them. When you post an offer, please include these "rules". One final note, I know a few folks like to compress these into MP3s. If you want to, go ahead but please do not send MP3s to the next person - MP3s permanently delete some of the "data" and sound quality degrades so please pass the masters along. When I heard Joni was going to have her opening at Lev Moross' gallery in L.A. I knew there was no way I could go. I remembered Ashara's kindness when she picked up a catalog for me from the Mendel exhibit in 2000 and thought, perhaps, I could get someone to do the same for me from L.A. I politely asked offlist (so as not to start a stampede of requests) if I paid for the catalog whether the person would be willing to purchase it for me and they said they would do their best. When I heard back that the mission was successful I was elated and waited patiently for word that it was on it's way. Yesterday I checked my mail and was dismayed to find a large package sitting in a puddle of water on my front porch wet and bedraggled looking, I prayed it wasn't my catalog. It was. I quickly wiped the parcel off and opened it to find the catalog was well-packed inside and had suffered no water damage, my heart leapt. I haven't seen any specifics of the catalog so I will do my best to describe it here. It is 15" tall X 7-5/8" wide Upon opening the package there is a brown paper band around the book with "joni mitchell" printed in black ink all lower case letters The book is bound in brown corrugated cardboard, ridges out and running vertically up and down the cover. In the center of the cover the initials "jm" - also lower case have been stamped so as to make them the only part of the cover which is "flattened". The front and read end-papers are prints of her work, the first page reads Lev Moross Gallery at the top, joni mitchell mixed media originals in the center and the dates of the show (which has now been extended into January but the date still reads December 18). On this page, much to my delight, the book is personalized "To Cassy" and signed. I cannot tell you how excited I am, not only that it's personalized but that she actually spelled my name right! It brought tears of joy to my eyes to read my name in her handwriting. The next page reads "Green Flag Song" and there is a photo of Joni full page next to it. What a lovely black and white photo of her, full-length sitting on a metal ladder wearing jeans and black leather ankle high boots. Her hair is up and she looks graceful and beautiful (she is aging wonderfully well) There begins the exhibit... Six pages of "The Beat of Black Wings" lyrics with opposing pages containing three images each. Then ten pages of "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" with images followed by five pages of "The Three Great Stimulants" Then "If I Had a Heart I'd Cry" . At the end of the book are the plates where we find two additional black and white photos interspersed, one of her with Lev sitting apparently discussing the exhibit and the second a portrait of her seated in front of one of her pieces, cigarette in hand, laughing and looking fabulous. On the printers page which is at the end of the book it clearly states the regular edition of the catalog is limited to 2,000 and the deluxe edition to 275 copies. I'd like to thank my list-angel for all the effort on my behalf to get this book into my hands. I am moved by the gift of your extra time. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Dec 2006 15:57:57 -0500 From: "rflynn@frontiernet.net" Subject: Re: Cactus Tree Quoting BlueForTheRoses@aol.com: > On a note for once completely about Joni....Is there anyone else here who > thinks Joni's version of "Cactus Tree" from "Misles Of Aisles" is actually > better than the studio version? But I disagree strongly about "Richard"--that silly and condescending waitress voice just destroys it for me. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Dec 2006 16:04:41 EST From: Rusty10113@aol.com Subject: Re: Cactus Tree In a message dated 12/7/06 2:51:10 PM, BlueForTheRoses@aol.com writes: > On a note for once completely about Joni....Is there anyone else here who > thinks Joni's version of "Cactus Tree" from "Misles Of Aisles" is actually > better than the studio version? > I have always thought that too, its more soulful, mature and heartfelt, and I like the overall vocal much more on MOA... totally agree on that.. and I think Amelia from Shadows and Light exceeds even heija's version as well, i LOVE it in the snippets i heard from WOHAM ... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Dec 2006 14:14:29 -0700 From: Les Irvin Subject: RE: Joni Catalog >I haven't seen any specifics of the catalog >so I will do my best to describe it here. For those not fortunate enough to have list angels who purchase art books at openings, the entire Green Flag Song exhibit has been put on-line: http://jonimitchell.com/painter Once there, choose to "browse the Green Flag Song collection" at the bottom of the page. I'd be interested in opinions on this set. I know she's addicted to the stuff and she seems to like it as well, and I doubt she's ever going to quit. I've put up with people smoking around me and it's not bad if you're in an area that's either very well-ventilated or outside. But closed up somewhere with a bunch of smokers, no matter how much I may like them, isn't how I would choose to spend my time.
