I feel like only last year, I was a kid and now I still have a hard time believing that I'm middle-aged - or is it old? When is middle-age? I'm usually at my lowest point when I first get up in the morning. If I'm going to have one of those weepy times, that's usually the time because it's the only time I really have to myself - before the kids get up (although the cats are already yowling for their breakfast.) When I had a car, I would sometimes get teary in the car too - not a good thing for driving! Music is certainly conducive to bringing back memories, both happy and sad, and the tears are sometimes tears of joy but often it's more like melancholy. It happened last Sunday night after a day of travel with my mom and sister and niece to see my grandma in her nursing home. All day long, the tension kept building--the long drive to youngstown, the sadness of saying goodbye to grandma even though we would rather have her with us at home, the stress of traveling with family... After I dropped everyone off at the end this long, emotional day, I was driving home in the dark and River was on and I had a little sob, then dried my eyes and felt that bit of cathartic relief. Anyone else experience this at the Holidays? ******* Oh, yes. "Over and over and over again, my friend...." at River (which, like Catherine said, is like a sigh), and you know there may be more! John and Yoko's "Happy Xmas/War is Over" reduces me to tears every single time. Sending up prayers for your family, especially your grandma, Patti P. _________________________________________________________________ Share your latest news with your friends with the Windows Live Spaces friends module. http://clk.atdmt.com/MSN/go/msnnkwsp0070000001msn/direct/01/?href=http://spaces.live.com/spacesapi.aspx?wx_action=create&wx_url=/friends.aspx&mk ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2006 11:08:36 EST From: PassScribe@aol.com Subject: Re: Best Songs Ever Written In a message dated 12/5/06 3:13:13 AM, > "Kate Bennett" > Subject: 99 best songs ever written > Hey, thanks for reminding me, Kate. I think it's natural to think and write in composites. All your similar memories come back to you. This is what I love about Joni. I can play her music from a particular album and instantly relate to the experience. Court and Spark always seems to touch base with me when it comes to a broken heart or memories of unrequieted love. However, River really speaks to my heart in the same way. I am probably one of the few Joni amigos who has never heard all of her works. I plan on spending the rest of my life discovering her music. These are uncompressed WAV files for those who care about such things -- they are not the MP3 versions. For those not familiar with trading trains, here is how they work: When the disks come to you, you make copies of as much of the contents as you want, and then you post back to this list offering to pass the disks along to the next person. You do not keep the originals -- you keep the copies you made for yourself. On most trains, the convention is that you make the copies and send the masters along within two days. For these trains, you must agree to turn them around within two weeks. Sometimes the offer goes unclaimed. Bob and I expect that to happen from time to time. So, by participating, you agree to just hang on to the disks and then make another offer a month or so later (or to respond if somebody posts a grovel looking for them). In theory, if everybody takes good care of the disks, wrapping them well, not letting them get scratched, etc. and passes them along, these covers will run on the tracks for years. Nobody is going to monitor the progress of these trains so if you participate and then lose the disks or fail to reoffer them, you will have kept others from enjoying them. When you post an offer, please include these "rules". One final note, I know a few folks like to compress these into MP3s. If you want to, go ahead but please do not send MP3s to the next person - MP3s permanently delete some of the "data" and sound quality degrades so please pass the masters along. So, anybody who would like to receive volumes 51-60, please send me: 1. Your mailing address and 2. Your promise to reoffer, etc. Enjoy and happy holidays, Eric P.S. If you are sitting on any of the earlier rounds, please offer them up again as its been a while and new folks might be interested. Cassy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2006 22:03:05 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: pet poison Thousands of dogs and cats needlessly suffer and many die each year by accidental ingestion of household poisons, including pesticides, popular houseplants, medications and common foods. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, the only animal poison control center in North America offers advice to pet owners about the many household products that can be dangerous and even deadly to their four-legged family member. * Mothballs, potpourri oils, coffee grounds, homemade play dough, fabric softener sheets, dishwashing detergent, batteries, cigarettes, alcoholic drinks, pennies and hand and foot warmers could be dangerous for your pet. * Keep all prescription and over-the-counter medications out of your pets' reach, preferably in closed/locked cabinets above the counter. Painkillers, cold medicines, antidepressants, vitamins and diet pills can be lethal to animals, even in small doses. * Read all of the information on the label before using a product on your pet or in your home. If a product is for use only on dogs, it should never be used on cats; if a product is for use only on cats, it should never be used on dogs. * Be aware of the plants you have in your home and yard. The ingestion of azalea, oleander, sago palm or yew plant material by your pet can be fatal. Easter lily, day lily, tiger lily and some other lily species can cause kidney failure in cats. * Make sure your pets do not go on lawns or in gardens treated with fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides until they have dried completely. Always store such products in areas that are inaccessible to your pets. If you are uncertain about the usage of any product, ask the manufacturer and/or your veterinarian for instructions. * Be alert for antifreeze/coolant leaking from your vehicle. Animals are attracted to the sweet taste and ingesting just a small amount can cause an animal's death. Consider using animal-friendly products that use propylene glycol rather than those containing ethylene glycol. * When using rat, mouse, snail or slug baits, or ant or roach traps, place the products in areas that are inaccessible to your pet. Some bait contains sweet smelling inert ingredients, such as jelly, peanut butter or sugar that can attract your pets. * Call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (1-888-426-4435) if you suspect that your pet has ingested something poisonous. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Dec 2006 01:00:01 -0500 From: "Cassy" Subject: Re: Weds... I liked the interview with a woman named Teri Horton that has a documentary coming out called "Who the @!#% is Jackson Pollock" which is about her joke thrift-store purchase of a 66" x 30" canvas for $5.00 ("they wanted $8.00) which turned out to potentially be an original Jackson Pollock worth in excess of 90 million dollars. ( http://www.filmjournal.com/filmjournal/reviews/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003408999 ) Elvis Costello was performing his contribution to "The Harry Smith Project: The Anthology Of American Folk Music Revisited" - "The Butcher". Roseanne Cash sang his backing vocal as a special guest. This piece reminded me of a cross between bluegrass and old Appalachian folk. The harmonies were slightly off for the first couple of verses but once they got in synch it was a lovely combination of voices.
