I've been listening to them and reading you comments, and I have to say I find them all spot on. I was just listening to Rydahl again, and had a funny moment. I was trying to figure out why her version is so wrong. I mean, you can have a paper-thin voice and still have a message. I decided in the end that the problem is that she just doesn't know what she is singing about, it's like she is all up in the clouds but she definitely ignores their dark sides. Having just thought this, I listened up again, just in time to hear her ring out the final line in all innocense: "I really don't know clouds at all" I'm still laughing, she definitely hit the nail on the head there!! Are you sure the Lundell song is called Glad igen? Because I've been trying to find the lyrics and I can't find a song by him by that name. Best Benedicte ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Dec 2006 21:43:20 +0000 From: missblux@googlemail.com Subject: Ulf Lundell's Carey Hello all, I don't know how familiar you are with the poet / musician / artist Ulf Lundell, he is quite big in Sweden. He made a song called 'Vppna Landskap' / Open landscapes, and it goes something like 'I thrive the best in open landscapes, close to the sea is where I want to live' which a lot of people are really fond of. It has been covered by a Danish singer, and although I find it a bit corny it's hard not to get moved by it. In any case, here comes the text of 'Glad igen', his cover of Carey which was among Bob's covers no 83. It's a very happy song about a man who has finally gotten over his heart-ache and wants to embrace the world. I find it quite touching because he is so wildly happy. I have translated it quite literally, that way you people can learn some swedish too! An easy language, you can start by saying your favourite singer is called Yoni Mishell! The chords are not mine, I copied the text from the internet. - ----------------- Glad igen /Happy again Text by Ulf Lundell Intro: E, A, B x4 [E] Vinden kommer in fren sydvdst, jag [B] sov ingenting i natt The wind comes in from South-West, I slept nothing last night Fvr himlens alla [A] stjdrnor dom glimma [E] mot mej som en [B] outtvmlig skatt For all the stars of the sky they twinkle at me like an inexhaustible treasure Och [E] vindarna bar med sej dofter [B] fren ett fjdrran hav And the winds carried with them scents from a far ocean Och mitt [A] hjdrta det stod [E] vidvppet och tog [B] emot allt vad natten gav And my heart it was left wide open and received everything the night gave Refrain: Se [B] kom hit, kom hit, kom [E] hit Kom till mej och [B] dansa So come here, come here, come here Come to me and dance [A] Morgonen doftar [E] ver Och jag dr [B] glad [E] igen [A] [B] The morning smells of spring And I am happy again [E] Glvmda dr svarta ndtterna de jag [B] gvmt mej fvr kvld och svek Forgotten are the black nights when I hid myself from coldness and deceit Och [A] glvmda dr alla [E] dagarna av [B] liv i ensamhet And forgotten are all the days of life in loneliness Och [E] glvmd dr hon som gick sin vdg fvr att [B] finna en annan vdn And forgotten is she who went her way find another friend Nu vill jag bara [A] dansa och flyga [E] vindens vdg och [B] vackert landa sen Now I will just dance and fly the wind's way and then land beautifully Refrain: Se [B] kom hit, kom hit, kom [E] hit Jag vill dansa med [B] er So come here, come here, come here I will dance with you [A] Morgonen doftar [E] ver Och jag dr [B] glad [E] igen [A] [B] The morning smells of spring And I am happy again Ja, [E] kom let oss stdlla till med fest i [B] verlig virveldans Yes, come let us celebrate in vernal whirling dance Kom let oss [A] snurra runt se att vera [E] terar far [B] ivdg i en fuktig svans Come let us spin around so that our tears fly off in a moist tail Och [E] ger du mej din hand se ger jag [B] dej min vilda famn And if you give me your hand then I will give you my wild embrace Och vill du ha mitt [A] hjdrta se dr det [E] vppet som en [B] vdlkomnande famn And if you want my heart then it is open like a welcoming embrace Refrain: Se [B] kom hit, kom hit, kom [E] hit Jag vill dansa med [B] dej [A] Morgonen doftar [E] ver Och jag dr [B] glad [E] igen [A] [B] So come here, come here, come here I will dance with you The morning smells of spring And I am happy again ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Dec 2006 14:08:46 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: ACOY, Webley Arena, London,1983 What I was referring to were the live versions of ACOY where Russell Ferrante joined Joni's dulcimer with piano. As for why Rydahl chose to sing this song. I don't know how serious your question was Bob but here is my serious(!) guess. Whereas I would think Joni wrote it as some sort of painful but frank realisation that she sees things through a glass darkly, this one seems to read it as a declaration of her own complete innocence.I think she is attracted by the pretty ice-cream castles and thinks of herself as a a pure angel who really doesn't know... But of course she's not, that's why she is out of air and can't reach the high notes that she is aspiring for, and that is why the effect is so comical (I hope she is not on the list!!!!). The sterile music completely fits her universe, it's almost scary! So some people sing songs to deal with their problem, others sing them to stay completely out of touch with reality. The more versions of this song I hear the more nauseous I get. Have they not heard the original??? It's bizarre. I'm amazed by Lisa Bassenge. I wish I understood how jazz musicians do whatever it is they do. There is so little orchestration (if thats what it is called), long silences etc, and yet everything is in place and completely tight. And she sings the song so well. I don't prefer jazz to rock, but the complexity of it is so impressive. I thought that James Taylor song in youtube that was linked in the last digest had some of it too. Anyway, enough from me, and good night from here!
