(& Nephew!) Ingrid sent this to me but also wanted it on the list. It was a comment to what I said in an earlier email about the film aobut Leonard Cohen: No Joni references (how dare they!), but Cohen said something that made me think about our discussions about Dylan and Joni. He said when he came to New York as a young man and met the 'market' there, he noticed that the American poets had more grand visions about themselves and the world. Because they were Americans, the somehow expected that they would be able to change the world. The Canadians, he said, were more humble. I don't think this sums up the mystery of why everyone knows Dylan, but not Joni. But then maybe it does, anyway. I think with her, it's because she sings about personal experiences, and people at that time were so much into changing society (damn in what Joni song does the word society occur? I hear it ringing in my ear right now, just ...society!) I almost get the impression that introspection was only acceptable if the point was to break down patriarchal patterns that would make you support the capitalist society. Not that many people would admit that 'all I really want to do right now is find another lover'. But don't we all know the feeling! And apart from the reasons you give ("the answer is blowin in the wind) it is just for me that his music ia appaling, in musical terms. I've missed you (have gone to the financial mathematics department and am handing in my application form for next year's intake later today, which by the way the oversear told me is , just by grace, in time as his just told the sciance faculty office that he needs a few more days to select applicants. I have no doubt that he will accept me. he and this other afrikaans lecturer (a woman spoke with me today). Hi Deb, Well, I got 474 hits for him on Google but I only found one audio file so far at: http://jukeboys.topcities.com/coden.htm and you can also see what he looks like nowadays. He must be pushing 70 by now... It's a comedy song on the yiddish side. He always did comedy bits. He also does a song now called "Twas the Night Before the Seventh Day of Chanukah" which has appeared 4 times on Dr. Demento: Twas the Night Before the 7th Day of Hanukkah-Ron Coden **Words and Music by Tom Lehrer 1990 "I'm spending Hannukah in Santa Monica Wearing sandals, lighting candles by the sea I spent Shavuos in East Saint Louis A charming spot but clearly not the spot for me... Those eastern winters, I can't endure 'em So every year I pack my gear and come out here til Purim Rosh Hashona I spend in Arizona And Yom Kippah way down in Mississippah But in December there's just one place for me Mid the California flora I'll be lighting my menorah Like a baby in its cradle I'll be playing with my draydel Here's to Judas Maccabeus, Boy if he could only see us Spending Hannukah, in Santa Monica, By the Sea!" He apparently also had a tv show in Detroit at some point and it seems he's done/does childrens music & shows. Also here is a link to some cds he made of a song I remember him doing called "Two Little Boys" an anti-war melodrama about two boys who grew up and joined opposite sides in the civil war: http://www.musicstack.com/show.cgi but if you really want to hear him in his prime, get that album on ebay by all means! It's a great album. BTW, the seller replied to my email with the songlist as follows: side 1 #1 medley-canaan land & work song #2 the new frankie and jonnie song #3 two little boys #4 highwayman #5 until it's time for you to go #6 rich man side 2 #1 lollypop tree #2 watermelon man #3 whisling gypsy #4 rising of the moon #5 black freighter (Pirate Jenny) ...and also sent me some more detailed pics including a glare-free shot of the conver. http://www.yousendit.com/download/YBbCVjCCp3l5TA%3D%3D Also, While meandering through some of the links I found him associated with Josh White Jr. and Charlie Latimer, both of whom I also booked at the Cellar. Still meandering I came across a link titled "Welcome To The Lizzard" which brought to mind the good ol' "Sippin Lizzard" coffeehouse in Flint MI. It was a cool place as I recall, a little excentric for a coffeehouse... I remember cusions on the floor..? Lister Brian Moss, once manager of the Cellar, could tell us a lot more about it but, at any rate, I opened up the link http://www.flintfolkmusic.org/links.htm and it seems the Lizzard still exists as the fest performance arm of The Flint Folk Music Society and sure enough Ron played there in 10/01 and as I surveyed the list further guess who jumped out, none other than Chuck Mitchell himself who played there in 2/02 and 11/02! Of course this started up the old memories again and I recall how Chuck and Joni used to play the Lizzard as often as they played the Cellar and that was often! See, if you look at a map of Michigan http://www.merriam-webster.com/maps/images/michigan_map.gif you'll see that Flint and Port Huron are almost exactly the same driving distance from Detroit. Mostly you hear about the Chessmate and that's because, being deep in the east side of the city (Detroit) they were opened 7 nights a week so that was their bread and butter and I'm sure they played there as often as they could, but most coffeehouses were only open on the weekend and so, whenever they had to give way to Tom Rush, Patrick Skye, Dave Van Ronk, The Spike Drivers, Siegel-Schwall Blues Band or The Blues Magoos they'd play all the other venues which were opened only on the weekend. http://www.jmdl.com/library/print.cfm?id=911 How about that? Ain't the internet cool? After more 40yrs! Who'da thunk it? Cheers, Pat Deb wrote: > Okay, you've got my attention. I refer to the Verve Records in relation to reissues of jazz albums that had 2 or 3 or 10 or 15 other alternate takes that are suppoed to provide the listeners with insights into the creative process of making the record. I like Billie Holiday but I didn't quite like the added tracks at the end of her "Lady in Satin" album and all those adlibs. I like to hear them in another CD of outtakes but not in the original CD that I have grown to like through the years. Somehow the re-sequencing of songs too are a pain because songs that I have known to follow each other were replaced by others. Like Ella Fitzgerald's historic "Ella in Berlin" album where the record producers thought it was the savviest thing to insert two live tracks from another concert in the middle of Ella's performance. I cringe at this inclusion much as I like the First Lady of Song's voice. What's even sad was the admission in the liner notes that those two songs were actually from another live album of Ella (Ella in Hollywood). So how does this relate to Joni's Blue? I like Blue as it is sequenced and put together but I have this uber-curiousity (nay, even excitement) to hear how the other tracks that are to be included in the new expanded version will meld and cohere in this already outstanding album. But outtakes from these sessions should, in my opinion, be placed in another compilation CD. I like Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" but my ears did not really pick up subtle changes in the additional "Flamenco Sketches" that was added in the enhanced version. But this is another story. Joseph in NC np: Johan Johannsson - "IBM 1401 - A User's Manual" Mark-Leon Thorne a icrit : I'm very confused. Everybody seems very excited at the prospect of the new expanded versions of a couple of albums to be released next year but when I expand my copy of Blue with songs that are more than appropriate for that album, some people get upset and tell me that I'm wrong. I don't get it. Joni's final decision for the tracks on Blue are obvious but, Hunter and Urge For Going were originally going to be on that album so, I don't see how it could be inappropriate to put them back. I see it as restoring the album or filling it out. Which other album would be more appropriate than Blue? I have always been a fan of the expanded album. I have many expanded versions of albums that I have collected over the years and just started doing it myself. I love Joni's albums as they are and I will never forget their original releases but I don't like having these bits and pieces lying around on their own. I want the full experience, how the album might have sounded if it weren't for the record company's restrictions. I probably agree with Joni's choice to dump those songs in favour of AIW and TLTISR. They are superior songs (then again, no Joni song is inferior to me) but who's to say that, if given the choice, Joni might have kept them all? It's supposed to be fun. I am a frustrated music producer and I am just playing because I can. I'm fulfilling a fantasy. I'm sure Joni's music conjures some sort of fantasy in each and every one of your heads. I only mentioned this hobby here in case anyone gets inspired by it and would like a copy of my CD cover. I never meant to cause any controversy or ill feelings. I only want to share what I do with like minded people. If people have a problem with what I do, I will keep it to myself. I have really felt that I have been under attack lately. I would never presume to tell anybody here what they can and can't do. The closest I would get is to suggest what I might do differently. I'm going through a tough time right now and feeling particularly friendless and vulnerable so I may be taking all this a bit too seriously but I certainly don't mean to upset anyone else. I get pleasure in knowing that I can contribute to this list and JMDL.com even though I don't have a lot to share. I don't even know if the artwork that I have uploaded is of any use to anyone or if I'm just wasting my time and bandwidth. My apologies if I have upset anyone. I was just wondering if you were aware of an inte resting cover of "THE CIRCLE GAME". I heard it on Jonathan Schwartz' WNYC-FM Saturday afternoon radio show. The song is combined with "THE WATERS OF MARCH"...a girl sings Joni's song and a guy sings the other one in a very interesting, stripped-down arrangement. The songs weave in and out and around each other and, to me, its a fascinating and beautiful combination of two unique and wonderful songs. I was in the car when I heard it, so I wasn't able to write down any info, but I think Schwartz said the album would be out in January. The artists are Jack and Jessica...or Jessica and John...something like that. At any rate, I thought of you immediately when I heard it. Shwartz has also been playing a lot of cuts from Carly Simon's upcoming new release...it sounds stunning...very wintry. Hope you are well! Hiya Harry - thanks for the heads up on that one, I have not caught wind of it yet so I'll keep the high beams on and hopefully will get more details soon - I couldn't pull anything up on the web about it. Sounds like an interesting medley. I got a recording of Circle Game in the mail yesterday - historically significant because it was recorded in 1969 before Joni released HER recording. It was like sitting in on a Beatles session, including between song discusions, tuning etc. Of course, they were making a movie (Let it Be) and had a pretty good size budget, so the tapes kept rolling. This wet my appetite for these types of recordings, and I continue to have that appetite today. However, often what comes out of the vaults was put there for a purpose, and in Joni's case I'm willing to place a good size bet that the best material is out already there. Still, if the new masters have lots of alternates and unreleased songs I'll buy them without hesitation. Any Joni is worth having.
