Hi gang, I've been trolling for this one on ebay for a little while, just to see if it would pop up, and sure enough, it did. (so feel free to bid if you like) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190056367227 (I have asked the seller to update this with the songlist which may or may not occur in a day or two) As a further historical note this album, one I once owned proudly, was recorded live at the Raven Gallery where Chuck and Joni often played. Ron was more regular than anyone at the Raven and I went there many times to see his sets. A short, stout, Jewish folkie from back in the day with a HUGE voice and presence. Ron Coden was the first 'real' folk singer I ever met when I was hired on to play as a regular performer at a little hole-in-the-wall students coffeehouse called "The Haven" close to 9 Mile when I was only 15yrs old with a repetoire of maybe 5 or 6 songs. This was a couple years before I met Chuck and Joni and I gotta tell ya, to me he was awesome! He had, and probably still has, a voice that could shake the walls. I particularly loved His version of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's 'Pirate Jenny' from the Threepenny Opera. Being songwriting challenged myself I tried to learn all I could from him and he was generous with his material. As you can see if you look at the Joni ad on my webpage, later on when I was working at the Cellar, I had the pleasure of booking him to play there. http://www.angelfire.com/pq2/phenryboland/ Anyway, just thought I'd share... Pretty ancient stuff, I admit, and maybe hard for many of you to relate to but for me these were really exciting days. Ron Coden was my greatest personal influence until I met Joni. There's a ship The Black Freighter turns around in the harbor shootin' guns from her bow Now You gentlemen can wipe off that smile off your face Cause every building in town is a flat one This whole frickin' place will be down to the ground Only this cheap hotel standing up safe and sound And you yell, "Why do they spare that one?" Yes. That's what you say. "Why do they spare that one?" All the night through, through the noise and to-do You wonder who is that person that lives up there? And you see me stepping out in the morning Looking nice with a ribbon in my hair And the ship The Black Freighter runs a flag up its masthead and a cheer rings the air By noontime the dock is a-swarmin' with men comin' out from the ghostly freighter They move in the shadows where no one can see And they're chainin' up people and they're bringin' em to me askin' me, "Kill them NOW, or LATER?" Askin' ME! "Kill them now, or later?" Noon by the clock and so still by the dock You can hear a foghorn miles away And in that quiet of death I'll say, "Right now. Right now!" The classic "Lennie & Dom Songs" bootleg also showed up on ebay today as well, with a starting bid of $25 or so. But in case you are, pianist Kenny Werner's latest release called "Democracy" has a track called "One for Joni". A JMDL member who is close to Werner told me it is Werner's tribute to Joni. Christopher Guest always makes hilariously funny scenes *and* at least one scene in each film that is heartbreakingly sad). - --------------------------------- Dicouvrez une nouvelle fagon d'obtenir des riponses ` toutes vos questions ! At least we'd have the chance to know how Blue would've sounded as it was first intended to sound. Oh well, if some of you already had the chance to, why don't let the others get theirs? Personally, I'd be curious to know how Hunter and The Urge For Going (which are tracks that I already know as single songs) would change their mood or their meaning in a totally new and complex context as Blue. Maybe there are some clues about what the company wants to do with the rumored JM re-issues in January 07. The "Upcoming Releases" section at Rhino shows Dec. 5 but no further. David Crosby's "If Only I Could Remember My Name" is: >A deluxe two-disc CD/DVD reissue the previously unreleased "Kids And Dogs" (featuring Jerry Garcia on guitar), 5.1 mixes, and rare video footage.> The way Rhino describes Depeche Mode's first album, it may, or may not, lack a 5.1 mix. They said the >Bonus DVD includes three bonus tracks plus six songs from a 1982 concert at London's Hammersmith Odeon. In addition, the 27-minute film Depeche Mode: 1982The Beginning Of Their So-Called Dark Phase chronicles a pivotal period in the band's history and features recent interviews.> Maybe Joni has commissioned 5.1 mixes of her albums but I doubt it. I can't imagine paying someone to spread minimalist masterpieces like "California" across 5 channels. So, that leaves video... Since the Refuge band isn't on any of the albums due in January, I don't think the January re-issues will include anything from the "Refuge of the Roads" video. This would be cool: if the BLUE set had the complete BBC2 TV appearance on a DVD. But I'll bet we'll get mostly songs from DVDs we already have like "Painting With Words and Music", "Woman of Heart and Mind", and "Shadows and Light". I predict they'll add tracks from "The Old Grey Whistle Test". If that first Carnegie Hall show really is in the can, I don't think Joni would package it as a freebie. From the pieces I've heard, it's worthy of a title of its own. Jim L. PS, Remember when we thought we'd get DualDisc reissues with free video on the DVD side, like "Devils and Dust"? This year I guess the new format is 2 disc sets, and the list prices on Amazon are higher. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2006 21:44:05 -0800 From: Subject: Urge for Going I remember where I was the first time I heard Joni's Urge for Going on Hits. I recall just knowing I had heard this beautiful song before way, way back but couldn't figure out how because I never knew that Joni wrote or recorded it. I probably heard the Tom Rush version somewhere in the 60s. At any rate it was a wonderful experience. Like Deja Vu but all new at the same time. And another funny thing - you can be acquainted with a list member (Brian) for nearly ten years and never know the connections. This one came from Jeff Capp. I love little tidbits like this: - ------------------------------------ "At least the moon at the window The thieves left that behind" This is an allusion to / appropriation of one of the most famous poems by the Japanese Buddhist priest Ryokan (1758-1831). The poem entitled "The Thief Left It Behind" is as follows: The thief left it behind: the moon at my window. According to Ivan M. Granger "The moon is a common metaphor, especially among the Zen poets, to represent enlightened awareness. In this haiku Ryokan is laughing at the absurdity of the theft. "The thief left it behind," he foolishly couldn't recognize the one great treasure the poor monk possessed -- "the moon," enlightenment -- and, instead, took an armload of worthless junk. (To point out what a petty haul it was, Ryokan even ran after the thief with the missed cushion.) Any sort of theft of Ryokan's possessions was a pointless act because, of course, who can take the moon from his window? Ryokan is amused and invites us to join in his laughter." This quote and other information about Ryokan can be found on Granger's website: http://www.poetry-chaikhana .com/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2006 01:16:40 EST From: Dflahm@aol.com Subject: Re: Urge for Going And we're all hip to the Theo Bikel version?
