Almost as much fun as a JoniFest, eh? As far as everyone agreeing on a "best" Joni song to vote on, to guarantee her an exaulted place in that magazine's "Best Songs Ever Written" survey... you MUST be kidding! I mean, I would vote for Hejira before I'd vote for Amelia (only because I think the latter is a bit too long and drawn out) but neither would be my first choice. I would even consider voting for a song other than my favorite (to show our solidarity & get Joni's name high on the list) if it was a song I REALLY liked, since I love SO MANY Joni songs. We'd definitely need to take a vote here. And, since you can vote more than once (for a different song) I could always vote for my all-time favorite anyway (yes, Bob, you know what it is...) Down To You. Sorry to be so inactive on the list lately but I DO read everything, even if I don't have the time or ambition to respond to everything. Really looking forward to seeing everyone at the Spring JoniFest at Full Moon. Speaking of which... I've NEVER heard Down To You performed live (not by Joni OR our talented people at Full Moon) so I have a DEAL for you: if someone performes Down To You with piano accompanyment (either by themselves or someone else) at this spring's JoniFest, I will give them a sweatshirt with Joni's picture on it that I will make up myself. (I'll also be donating a couple of t-shirts for the raffle drawing at the fest, or whatever you call what Ashara does). If you're planning on doing this song, let me know your shirt size beforehand. Halie is only 22 but is a talented singer-songwriter - VERY much reminds me of Tori Amos, so if you don't care for Tori you may not like this CD all that much. The first two folks to give me the right answers will win. So here are the questions: 1. Who sang River on the 2000 TNT Joni tribute TV broadcast? 2. Which of these artists HAS NOT recorded River? a. Heart b. Dolly Parton c. Barry Manilow d. Roseanne Cash e. Trick Question, Muller - ALL of them have recorded River 3. A recording of River released this year pairs whom with k.d. lang? 4. R&B singer Kenny Lattimore sings River on whose Christmas album? 5. River appears on which of Joni's albums (a total of three)? Good luck, and happy googling. Please send your answers to me offlist - I'll keep the contest open until I get two replies with (5) correct answers. Over the years, I have actually met Joni-loving men, whose girlfriends would not let them look at Joni during the concerts (they could only listen) nor would they let them look at Joni's cover sleeves or pictures. Some girls, I've been told, have actually given ultimatums to their partners and made to choose between Joni or them. I've heard similar experiences about Sade. Sad, eh? Poor boys, when they have to look and long for Joni as their off night-backstreet. Joni is exemplary proof of the evidential power of absolute beauty, to me. Joni on the Democratic wins Helena wrote: Before the mob started to get overwhelming for her, we got a chance to talk briefly with her about her art and the recent win by the Democrats in the elections. She said to Rose, pointing her finger "and did you see Bush sitting there like a little boy next to Nancy Pelosi, he knew he was cooked." I LOVE IT! Thank you so much for sharing that, Helena. Made my day...my week...my year! A lot of people have been talking about that tableau, but no one said it quite like Joni. Does she have a way with words or what? I am so glad (understatement) that she is speaking out again. She will help us get through these waves. And speaking of the recent win by the Democrats, add one more. In one of the closest races in the country, my man Joe Courtney (NOT to be confused with Joe Creeperman) was declared the winner yesterday after a recount. He won by 91 votes. (On election night, it was 167.) This second congressional district is a doozy....in 1994 the Dem won by 24 (or 21?) votes. The margins in most of the 65 towns were very close, but in mine (Mansfield, home of UConn) he won by a whopping 4,394 to 1,751. (NPIMH: "Our town is a very very fine town....") I want to write a little letter to the editor of our campus paper to thank the students (and pat them on the back) for voting. They made a difference and they should know it. There is great photo in today's paper of a beaming Joe Courtney flanked by Congresspersons John Larson (Chuck's former classmate) and my fave Rosa LeLauro. (She's the one who spoke at my son's commencement ceremony and said "We need to bring our troops home from Iraq" when I was the lone clapper -- the cheese who stands alone). This picture gives me great hope. "And so we ask you please Can we help you find the peace and the star Oh my friend" Stardust. Golden. Can you get us back to some semblance of the garden? Sorry for the politics again. But hey, Joni started it! A while back I lamented to a friend that people were calling for less politics on this list, and she said: "Huh? Joni wrote *Woodstock*, for god's sake! And of course, that is not how it is meant! True beauty is not about "looks" at all whether it be a woman or a man. Joni's beauty in person is startling because it is like her entire inner beauty, spirit and personality just bursts out of her pores. She has a glow around her, light sparks brightly from her eyes and her countenance is very soft. The bright burst of inner beauty you experience when you meet her in person transcends her physical features. She has presence and is fully animated and engaged. I think when people say someone looks so youthful it is not because they have been dieting or had botox or nips and tucks. I think it is because all the trials of life have not completely conquered their spirit. Rather than having, for instance, a hard, cold, hollow or weary look in their eyes, their eyes still have some of the sparkle of a teenager or the innocence of a child. Rather than having a tired, grim or resigned bearing, they look spunky! That's what makes them look youthful or what can be regarded as beautiful. So let me get one thing out quickly: Lesli, dear, I know what you mean about feeling older and less beautiful. But fuggedaboutit (or however you spell that). Here's a song for you, and for everyone, for the morning, from our old friend Carole: You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face And show the world all the love in your heart Then people gonna treat you better You're gonna find, yes, you will That you're beautiful as you feel Waiting at the station with a workday wind a-blowing I've got nothing to do but watch the passers-by Mirrored in their faces I see frustration growing And they don't see it showing, why do I? You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face And show the world all the love in your heart Then people gonna treat you better You're gonna find, yes, you will That you're beautiful as you feel I have often asked myself the reason for sadness In a world where tears are just a lullaby If there's any answer, maybe love can end the madness Maybe not, oh, but we can only try You've got to get up every morning with a smile on your face And show the world all the love in your heart Then people gonna treat you better You're gonna find, yes, you will That you're beautiful as you feel I still think that your picture is beautiful, and so is your spirit. So "feel" that! So there! Forget those LA beauties and the young ones....although I do know how you feel, when I walk across campus and see all the bright young faces, barely clad in what looks like underwear (those skimpy jersey bottoms w/ UCONN or their high school advertised on their butts....sheesh!). All Joni people are totally beautiful. That's my two cents before dreamland. Love and peace, Patti P.
